Thanks for explaining that button, Matty! If it were a snake it would have, well you know... :D

Re: Multiple Alias files in a project

OK, I now have a new related question. I've created a second alias file for a second output for a new release of our software. This is to accommodate some significant changes I am planning to make in a couple of help areas. Does the setup shown in the screenshots below makes sense? The header file i...

Re: Multiple Alias files in a project

You folks just answered my exact question! Literally days before I was going to ask it! Amazing... I feel sort of silly about creating a new alias file just to move identifier-linked bookmarks to 5 new topics for an upcoming release, out of... maybe 1800. But I don't think there's another way.

Re: Opinion: keep help public or put behind customer logins?

Hi Kristin! I wrote up a big reply and thought I had posted yesterday. I don't think I hit submit after all. Not gonna rewrite it, but I really appreciate your insights. The question for me is how to negotiate a lot of what is going on now that the help is moved out of a purely R&D paradig...

Re: Opinion: keep help public or put behind customer logins?

Really appreciate your reply, Dave. Couple of thoughts: - If your product is the sort that really needs help, and your help is really good, then your help is also a selling point and shouldn't be hidden from potential customers. Wholeheartedly agree. The product really needs help. I'd say that the h...

Re: Opinion: keep help public or put behind customer logins?

Thanks for your feedback. Awesome. If there are weaknesses in regards to competition it is better to eliminate those rather than to hide their existence...at least my QA biased POV. Agreed. Copycat development isn't preventable and if it gets detected it is a matter for lawyers to deal with copyrigh...

Re: Opinion: keep help public or put behind customer logins?

RamonS - excellent thoughts, thank you. A few points that relate to your response: Several departments seem to feel as though the webhelp I built and tied into the app(s) is actually too robust when compared to the older .chm. Too helpful! If I correctly read the subtext of the unexpected VP-level p...

Opinion: keep help public or put behind customer logins?

Without going into a lot of detail, I am fairly certain that our management team will be moving to take our help private (put behind customer logins). I do not feel that this is a good idea, but I would like to hear your thoughts. The software that we create holds the majority market share in our in...

Re: Can you open multiple topics at once?

Thought I would add a bit here. I have about 300 topics I imported that I gotta edit. Nope, I can't find/replace for this. (ugh) I was researching this very point, and found myself simultaneously flummoxed, flabbergasted, and discombobulated. Here's my workaround... works well enough. Open a Flare p...

Re: "Generating alias file: Missing topic:"

I figured it out. I blame myself, but the error could have been a smidgeon more helpful. Identifiers were added to this topic in a batch. One section of this topic was conditionalized as "ScreenOnly." Therefore, the topic was missing. Maybe someone will find this post someday and it...

"Generating alias file: Missing topic:"

When building WebHelp, I get the "Generating alias file: Missing topic:" error. Weird thing is, I cracked open the .flali in notepad; the topic exists there as expected. The ID exists in the .h. The path in Flare's .flali editor is all good. The bookmarks that are referenced along with the...

Re: .CHM deprecated?

Hi Helen. We just went though the same thing. We opted to go with standard WebHelp over the newer HTML5 WebHelp due to the fact that our customer base may not have the modern browsers necessary to view the slick HTML5 output. It should be easy to switch over in another year or two, though. We didn't...

Editing .flali outside of Flare to add batch of identifiers?

I'm contemplating something here. I don't know if it will work or perhaps break my project. To help avoid the laborious process of clicking about in the alias editor to assign topic bookmarks to CSH IDS, could I possibly edit the .flali file to accomplish the same? I have some expert script writers ...

Re: Remove Search Highlighting Completely?

I put a feature request in regarding this auto-styling. We'll see if it takes. I assume this bolding is added to "guarantee" some sort of search highlighting. Whatever the case may be, it would be nice to merely highlight without altering any "intentional" styling of help system ...

Re: F1 call being redirected, ID's being stripped out in IE?

Update: One of our developers determined that this is likely some cross-site scripting protection that is built into IE. He did some more work on the redirects and has them working in all browsers now. :D

Hey Dave - I checked this article out and I can't find the "Unclassified" category underneath the HTML tag. Nor can I find the mc-master-page property anywhere. What am I missing here? Thanks!

F1 call being redirected, ID's being stripped out in IE?

Hi - I have a CSH-based project that is being redirected incorrectly in IE. When the redirect is hit in IE, it is stripping off the #ID and jumping to the default/home page of the project. The redirect is staying intact in FireFox and Chrome... any ideas?
