Re: CHM file is giving "Navigation to Page canceled"
Sooo how did the CHM get to the computer you're having trouble viewing it on? The reason I ask is that if you send it by email or download it through a browser, some versions of Windows think it's a potentially dangerous file and block access to it. If this is the case, you can unblock it by right c...

JS error on topic navigation
The CHM file I generate for our product is throwing a js error whenever you open the help or navigate between topics. The error is the usual mk:@MSITStore CHM error, and is occurring in SkinSupport/MadcapUtilities.js. The error says "Unable to set value of the property 'async': object is null o...

Re: What slows Flare?
First question would be, do you have similar issues in Windows (file) Explorer? If you have things like file preview on, it can slow things down. (Windows is actually dumb enough that if you select a file and have Windows preview it, it won't let you delete that file because it's in use... by the pr...

Re: Linking to a file
You would have to treat this the same way as a link to any other type of external file by creating a URL using an 'a' tag. And like any other URL linking to a file, you would also need to ensure that the path to the file remains valid after the fact (i.e. the Excel file would need to be in the same ...

Re: Conditions, levels, and includes overriding excludes
My understanding was it worked like this: * Default behaviour is to include everything. * Exclude over-rides the default so that you can exclude some content. * Include over-rides the Exclude so that you can force content to be included even if it has inherited an Exclude. To put it another way, Exc...

Re: Master Page or just build it in topic?
Thanks, all. The output for the moment will be CHM. We may eventually produce Word as well for print purposes, but since these are hyperlinks I don't expect them to work on paper  As such, I would probably use a different approach in the print output through conditional formatting. Three li...

Re: Editing topics outside editor??
I have seen exactly that before. If you have the same topic open in the text editor and the XML editor, the XML editor complains when you make a change in the text editor. It isn't harmful, though, as long as you haven't made separate changes in both instances. (Although it would be nice if Flare wo...

Master Page or just build it in topic?
Hi, all. I'm just getting back into documentation after a few years in a QA role, and would appreciate some feedback on the best way to approach a particular design for a help page. The application we make has a number of screens that support multiple related workflow steps. For example, one screen ...

Re: Exporting to Word
Well, unless it's something hidden in the <p>, there wasn't a line height. Remember that in CSS styles can inherit attributes from other styles. So if there was a line height set in <body> or <html> it would apply to every tag in the topics unless over-ridden by something closer (i.e. your setting ...

Re: Resizing Wide Graphics For Print/Online
I don't think BMP is a Web-friendly format, so while it would work for print it wouldn't work for WebHelp. From your description, I don't think the readability problem is caused by the PNG format - I think it's caused by the fact that if you scale an image that contains text down too far, you don't ...

Re: stacked stylesheets by import?
Thanks, Nita! To confirm, does the child stylesheet override any conflicting style definitions imported from the global stylesheet? No, it's the other way round. The imported (linked) stylesheet file is run first, then the definitions in your current stylesheet follow those - so they will take prec...

Re: Resizing Wide Graphics For Print/Online
I'd try something first: use an image editor to resize a screenshot to 6" width and print it. Can you read the results? I've seen some wide Excel files scaled down before, and even if the resize is good often the text itself ends up so small you can't read it. (I'm going out on a limb and assum...

1) Select or create a table.
2) Right click on it and choose Table Style > Edit Style (or go to the Table menu and select the same options).

Re: How to override Local Formatting
To get to the point. As I was sending the file to you, I opened the stylesheet in Crimson Editor and surprise surprise! All sorts of details were defined, which are not displayed when opening the stylesheet within Flare. I edited the file in C editor and the colour change takes effect on the topic ...

Re: Why Help Authoring Tools Will Fade
I think the real issue isn't about tools at all. Tom writes that a customer of his was asking him to generate hundreds of pages of documentation on some pretty specialized subject matter (that he has no background in) in a matter of 2-3 months. Well, realistically that couldn't be done by one person...

Ok, one other step you need to do: after you have everything set up for find and replace, click the "Start" button at the bottom of the panel.

I concur with Lisa: put pre tags around it. That should stop it from running as a script.

In the "Options" section of the Find and Replace dialog, switch the "Find In" drop down from (current document) to (whole project) or (all open documents).

Well, in theory all that sounds like a decent design. The fact that they didn't hit the mark on any of the 4 main goals after two years isn't exactly cause for optimism though. I'll believe it when they actually publish a spec / toolset that HAT vendors can put in shipping tools. I think the one thi...

Re: How to override Local Formatting
I just realized another problem with this manual replacement method... Most of the files are single sourced from another project and merged. Re: How to override Local Formatting
You can create a class of H1 - in your stylesheet it would look like h1.classname You would then have to apply it to the H1 blocks in each topic in order to get it to take affect, though, so it would be a time consuming process. You couldn't use that method, the local formatting would still overrid...
