I aggree the first approach you mention is better. I was not aware of the 'make searchable/nonsearchable' option, which was my main concern. -- Actually I was looking for something like this in the toc, but it's in the topic properties. Should have checked help!

I reported this to support and it turns out it's a bug, but fortunately there's an easy work-around.
