Re: continued ePub issues

Unfortunately, I never got a response to the suggestion from MadCap. There are several things that I doubt would be difficult to implement that would improve Flare. For instance, In OxygenXML, I can cross-reference to an ordered or unordered list element. In Flare, I only figured out a way of cross-...

Re: continued ePub issues

Thank you. I submitted a request for new "feature". Unfortunately, aside from fixing the compressed mime attachment issue with epubs, Madcap never addressed any of the other code issues. One easy fix would be to strip out of the CSS file all designations not pertinent to an epub - like the...

continued ePub issues

I am coming up for renewal of Madcap Flare. I've stopped using it for new projects due to some issues with pdf and ePub outputs. I have to maintain double bibliographies for ePub and pdf targets based on how Flare handles cross-references to paragraphs vs lists. The math equations in generated targe...

Re: PDF or EPUB?

My experience is that Flare generates a pretty good pdf (not as good as LaTeX) but pretty poor epubs. You can fix a lot of junk code afterwards with Sigil or other epub editor, but I switched to OxygenXML just for the problems with epub targets. Flare generates very good html output, and that is its...

Re: Mac hardware recommendations for Flare 2021

The ram specs should work. I run flare via a Mac Pro with parallels and have no problem, but I have an intel chip. If I did not have so many Mac programs, I would never pick an Apple computer. My last two have had terrible reliability and spent weeks in repairs. My Mac Pro is a little over a year ol...

Re: 3D graphics format from Solidworks

The only program I know that can open Solidworks files natively other than Solidworks is Onshape (free for non commercial use), but that doesn't have the export option you want either. That is not a common export format of any of the usual CAD programs I've used (Rhino, Onshape, Solidworks, Fusion 3...

Re: Vertical table heads in PDF output

I requested this almost a decade ago after finding the tables in Framemaker could not be replicated in Flare. I got the same answer from Madcap at the time.

Re: Unwanted blank pages in PDF output

I have found that sometimes you fix the page continuity in the table of contents but it doesn't stick and you need to do it again. I would go back to each topic in the table of contents and double check the continuity settings. The other thing to check is the page styles. If you have just a right an...

Re: corrupted ePub files

Looking a MadCap Flare generated ePub and Oxygen XML generated ePubs side by side, I think I know why Flare generates so many errors. When Flare creates an ePub, it transfers over all designation for print output in the CSS file, rather than clean it up to just be the base and ePub specific CSS desi...

Are the cover and topic separate files put together with a toc? You probably have start on even pages or odd pages selected.

Re: corrupted ePub files

Flare missing equation and another section from better OxygenXML ePub output is shown below (I submitted a bug report to Flare a year ago but they said it was some ePub specific viewing issue, which it is not):

Re: corrupted ePub files

To show some of the specific issues I'm having with Flare (and have had for years with submissions for tech support from Flare). The attachments show too much line spacing in tables of contents from pdf output in Flare, vs LaTeX. The Flare settings were tweaked by tech support to have the least line...

migrating from Flare to Docbook

I've had a love hate relationship with Flare for the past six or so years. It is a great HAT program, but falls short for me with pdf and ePub outputs. I have several books that I've created. Over the years, I've migrated most of them from InDesign or Framemaker to Flare. With one of the more comple...

corrupted ePub files

I've been fighting the corruption of ePub files created by MadCap Flare for about six years and have submitted multiple bug reports. For most of the years, Flare compressed the MIME type, which did not meet standards. But it also transfers over print related designations in the CSS and adds other CS...

Re: font embedding

Fixed: I saw an old forum post that said one has to install fonts with right click>install for all users rather than double click. I removed the fonts and reinstalled and it now embeds properly.

font embedding

I got a new computer and reinstalled MadCap Flare on the new computer. My previous projects open fine, but the pdf outputs no longer embed several fonts. The fonts are installed on Windows 10. What might cause Flare to fail to embed fonts?

Re: Another strange ePub error

Unfortunately, the reply I got from MadCap tech support is that they don't have IngramSpark and that old versions of Apple Books will open the Flare generated ePubs. I am trying to work with Apple tech support to see why Books (V2) that downloads with Catalina generates a "missing file or direc...

Another strange ePub error

In trying to create a hardcover book and corresponding ePub from Flare through IngramSpark, I encountered a new error with Flare generated ePubs. I don't understand the error. InGramSpark gives the message: [ERROR]OPS/ChapterName.xhtml: 20:90: value of attribute "id" is invalid; must be an...

Re: ePub errors

The mime compression error is fixed in today's update. Hurrah! And they brought back Framemaker import and updated to FM 2019. I haven't tested MathML yet, but I was very happy to see these changes. Unfortunately, MathML in ePubs is still broken. Basically one needs MathType to convert the formulas ...

Re: ePub errors

It doesn't look like good news. There are three errors in ePubs from Flare: the compressed mime attachment, corrupt MathML equation output, and numerous errors with ePub checker. (46 errors and one warning with my latest ePub). I have Bronze support and the reply from MadCap was that "it" ...

Is ePub target going the way of Framemaker import/export? Does Madcap plan to deprecate print targets to concentrate their resources on web based output?

ePub errors

Epub targets have always been unstable for me, when generated from Flare. For at least five years, Flare has generated ePubs with compressed mime attachment, which violates ePub standards. I have notified them several times and they have not fixed it. But a more recent problem: ePubs generated from ...

Removing undefined conditions

I had a conditional tag which I no longer needed and deleted. I have checked with the text editor and there are no more references to that tag in the topics. However, in the targets, there are still references to the deleted tag, under "undefined". I cannot delete them. They are not in the...
