Re: Single-sourcing TOCs for multiple targets

I think the reason may be that the condition is applied to your topic located in the TOC rather than to the topic itself. If the condition is applied to the topic (as opposed to the topic's listing in the TOC), the condition tag would be seen in the Content Explorer. Since you've conditioned the TOC...

Creating Contributor Template.. Lengthy process!

Hi, I've recently been having problems creating Contributor Templates in Flare. It seems to take an age to 'compute dependencies' and has taken so long I've continually given up. However, now I need to use it so I can't give up. It used to be very quick (less than 1 minute) to compute but it's been ...

Re: Flare v10 - Crashes

I also had a similar problem and, just in-case the memory leak fix hasn't solved it, the advice I was given by Madcap was to use the Web Layout view for the difficult topics. I had a few topics that would not work due to the large numbers of images in a large file but they would work well when in we...

Re: Windows zipping function versus Flare zipping

Thanks for so many useful responses! I have decided to go with standard zipping but for one reason only; that while we are waiting for source control, I want a way to store versioning information with the file so I zip this into the package. If it wasn't for that, I'd probably use the Flare zipping ...

Re: Font changes to bold unexpectedly

This was maddening for me for a while too! I have a workaround (which does remove the problem) rather than a solution.. The way I managed to get rid of it is to put in a 'background' of some sort behind the shape. That is, I would add another shape that is white (with either no border or a white bor...

Re: Can't crop a new image

I think this is what atomdocs was getting at, but just incase.. As far as I can remember, Capture won't let you crop an image that you've added to an already created/open image; you can only crop the original. Hence you can crop an image that you have opened, but not one that you copy and paste into...

Re: How to change image sizing? Which of the 3 settings?

That is one way, but the images I needed at that size are photos which I don't capture on the screen. I'm still not super confident on images since I last posted but with Tech Support I have got some more information which may help. The Format Tab and the Print Format tab are slightly redundant appa...

Sure. http://forums.madcapsoftware.com/download/file.php?mode=view&id=3915&sid=1fb48b90f7e90512b3cb93b3c6fc0891 All the research I have done has indicated they are not important property files but I don't want to risk the corruption of files down the track. Is this for an automatic backup so...

Windows zipping function versus Flare zipping

Hihi, I am wondering if anyone can tell me whether they think zipping the flare file in windows is more/less advantageous than using the Flare zipping function? I'm trying to work out which method to use to backup our project and I'm sitting on the fence. Reasons to use Flare zipping: - it's neat an...

File properties with NTFS

Hi, I've recently been having a problem backing up my project because when I copy the project file from my computer to the server, some of the image files have properties that cannot be copied. We're assuming this is because my pc is NTFS and the server we have is linux-based. I was just wondering i...

Re: Page layout header does not retain margin setup

Unfortunately I'm not able to give you a solution but I thought I might mention that I did find the same problem when I tried outputting to a Word document... What I did find is that Flare didn't keep any of my body or header margins; my body had big margins (small body frame) and my header had smal...

Re: Linked variables? Possible or impossible?

Thanks :-) That's helpful and may be the way I have to do it. Or if you used a cross-reference, then the link text would be generated automatically - this is based on your MadCap|xref format, so it's not necessarily the heading, but it has to come from something in the topic. So there's not really a...

Linked variables? Possible or impossible?

Hallo, I don't know whether what I am about to ask is possible (in the way i'd like), but I'm asking just-in-case! I am looking for a way so that every time a word is mentioned in Flare, a hyperlink is used. I know that I could do this using a snippet for each word/set of words, but because it's onl...

Re: Analyzer continually refreshing

Just as an update to the problem; have been working through this with Tech Support. We found that one solution to the problem is to repair the .net framework and then delete the user, analyzer and output folders in the associated Flare project. That said, I've repaired the .net framework and not del...

How to handle images in Flare for large projects?

Hallo, I have a rather large project developing and after some discussion, it seems like Flare *should* be able to handle very large projects quite happily.. so I'm considering full-steam-ahead with all user guides inside the same project ( ). However, I'm already having problems with the nu...

Re: Versioning of TOCs within Flare

Thanks for so many good replies! I have spoken to one of our software guys who said he can incorporate me (i.e., Flare work) into the source control system. We're going to use TFS because that's what the developers will be using shortly (but they're currently using SVN). I did suggest that SVN is an...

Re: Single-sourcing TOCs for multiple targets

Thanks for all the responses! So much food for thought.. So, you could create a TOC for each chapter (let's say), and then you insert that chapter TOC into the "PDF BOOK" TOC, and then you also insert the chapter into the "ONLINE HTML" TOC. That way, the chapter content is contro...

Re: Single-sourcing TOCs for multiple targets

Thanks for such a quick response! It has been working well so far keeping them separate but I do want to make sure I'm not missing things. I suppose even when I put them inside one TOC there's nothing to stop me missing it. The best solution is probably just to be thorough and methodical in my appro...

Versioning of TOCs within Flare

Hi, I currently have a bit of a dilemma with versioning my user guides within Flare. The dilemma is that I have different TOCs for different versions of the user guides we write. Single-sourcing TOCs for multiple targets

Hallo, I currently have pdf and html5 versions of each user guide that we create. I am wondering how many people keep their TOCs as separate for their different targets (e.g., 1 TOC for print target and 1 TOC for html5 target) versus those who have all topics in one TOC and condition them as print o...

Re: Review Pack Wizard - Creating a Custom Message

The way we do it is to have an email template with the information that I want. I then 'save' the file to the local server and the users can go and get the file when they need it for review.
Perhaps you could just attach the saved file to the email template?

Re: v10.1 - TOC unlinked item

Just one thing to note is if you create an unlinked TOC book the headings below may appear twice (for online output). This is a bug in 9.1.2 (#36867) found by Tech Support when I contacted them about the issue. To avoid this, you need to link the book to the topic. I'm not sure if this has been fixe...

Re: Sending for Review based on pdf target

This isn't an exact answer to your question but may help in the interim. As far as I know there is no way to view any output exactly as it would appear in Flare because Flare compiles all elements together to do the previews and builds whereas all that information may not be available in Contributor...

I had a look for this the other day in Flare but couldn't see anything either; just the Status and Info Bars.

Was there a particular reason you are looking to turn it off? Or just the real estate issue?
