Re: Cleaning out Webworks junk
It compiles it ok...but it needs some testing. It is hard to tell if it is worth the effort to make it be good to go in Flare. Thanks for the suggestions.

Re: Are Madcap Flare URLs open to anyone with the URL?
This question comes up from time to time. If the help contains anything that will be of advantage to the competition then you may need to seek other ways of providing it. Even with authentication someone may download the whole help and pass it on. Obscurity is not effective security.

Re: Cleaning out Webworks junk
I will look into that. I wish I could put this project on more solid footing, but after inquiring about delivery date and being told "yesterday" I had to use HTML Workshop and Notepad. I guess the 90s are back. I surprised myself by remembering how to do this.

Cleaning out Webworks junk
Got asked to add content to a CHM that I didn't touch in almost 2 years and that I do not have the original FM/WebWorks project for, but only the CHM. I managed to decompile the CHM, use HTML Workshop to make a project from it, import that into Flare 2020, and compile a new CHM. When I now open the ...

You got the procedure down...that is how I would do it. Key is unregistering on one box before registering on the other.

Re: April 2019 release
In the past it was always recommended to update everyone at the same time. The newer version may make changes to project files and add content that is incompatible with the old version. I do not know if that is the case with the latest release. Make a backup of all projects and then try it out...alt...

Re: Meaning of Build error 10086 One or more errors occurred
Yes, the limitation is 255 characters for commands and path. So depending on which operation is called using external tools the file path could be shorter than 255 and still run into problems because the overall length of command and path is too long. In Win 10 there is a setting that lifts this cha...

Re: Flare running very slowly
Do you have the project on a network share? Having the files locally will speed things up.
Other than that....virus scan going? Windows Updates? Anything else running that eats up resources and makes Flare (and other apps) come to a crawl?

Re: Reverse engineering aliases from CHM
The original CHM was created with WebWorks from a FrameMaker project...and no, I don't have the FM project for importing, which wouldn't have helped me anyway since the mappings were made in WebWorks. KeyTools shows the ID - topic matches like this: 5521 = VTUG20_Students.03.51.html 5530 = VTUG20_St...

Re: Reverse engineering aliases from CHM
Tried it and there is no Data folder created on decompile. So back to the original plan of patching things up manually...it will be a looong looong day. At least I will have a working Flare project in the end and unlike the old tech writer I will put a copy out on the network and into source ...

Re: Reverse engineering aliases from CHM
Thanks! I give this a try. Did find KeyTools and using the analyze feature to find the alias map in the CHM, but that means reassigning the topics by hand. It is rather tedious work.

Reverse engineering aliases from CHM
Got a special project and need to remove content from a CHM, then recompile. Importing and decompiling the CHM was easy as was removing the content. Now hitting a road block with the aliases. After import there were not aliases and map IDs defined. I got the header file from the developer and that i...

(Free) PDF Editor for large files
My former life as tech writer caught up to me and I am now asked to edit a rather large PDF (~800 pages) that I do not have any project files for. Pulling into most recent version of Word turns it into a totally garbled mess. I used AbleWord before for smaller PDFs, but with a phat file like this on...

Re: Tumbleweed... Where is everyone?
Still around...but use Flare only for my hobby projects. My company decided against maintaining a traditional help file and instead wants to use videos and integrated assistance with WalkMe. Oh well, would have been a major task to redo the help anyway.

This might help
http://help.madcapsoftware.com/flare201 ... Topics.htm
The ToC sync works only when a topic is only included once in the ToC, otherwise there is no means to determine which entry to sync to.

Re: do i need 2018 r2?
Installation is straight forward, at least it was in the past. Cannot speak as to how harmful it is to install, depends quite a bit on your project and how changes would negatively impact it. As far as I know, there is no need to install the update if you don't want to.

Re: Anyone using Flare for an open-source docs project?
Fair point, but the doc team could accept change requests and work those in. Many FOSS projects have a team of stewards that make sure that whatever gets submitted is not some junk that breaks a lot of other things. As I said, the goal is to provide better software with decent documentation. The rej...

Re: Anyone using Flare for an open-source docs project?
Why is it the wrong tool? Use the best tool for the job. I do appreciate the keep things clean as far as open source goes, but don't let that get in the way of delivering great documentation for your users. Be one of the few FOSS projects where docs are not total crap (some still think that every us...

Are you running Flare as admin? Might be that the setting is stored in the registry that is read-only for non-admin users. Just a guess.

Re: Stop the internal text editor replacing spaces with tabs
As mentioned before, XML is unaware of tab. Tab is unspecific as to what the tab width is. The tab width would need to get passed along with the text and CSS has other means to accomplish that. While it may not desired, Flare turns what gets pasted into valid XML. You could try using inste...
