Re: Image transparency not honored in PDF

In case the internet is wondering about this, it's still a problem in 2022, and the option to set Image Compression to "automatic" in the target PDF Options does not work. The issue for me is MadCap Capture (v. 7 is the latest in 2022). If the image has a Capture profile associated with it...

In case anyone still ends up here from 2021...
MadCap documentation describes a simpler method: Create an alternate stylesheet and add the background image to the <body> selector.

Re: Unwanted blank pages in PDF output

2021 and this problem still seems to be an issue. I'd not had a problem for a while, but there seems to be something buggy about the "Empty Page Handling: Inject empty pages as needed to ensure TOC nodes start on their selected pages" option. I'm sometimes getting an additional blank page ...

Re: "The surrogate pair (0xD83D, 0xD83D) is invalid..." Word

In case anyone else comes across this - found the solution today. This is related to a bug in Flare (reported) where one cannot insert the link character into a document: Character's decimal code: 🔗 Looks like: link.png The import bug is the reverse. If you have that character present in a document ...

"The surrogate pair (0xD83D, 0xD83D) is invalid..." Word imp

When importing a particular Word doc in a particular project, I am seeing the following error: Screen1.png Anyone seen this before? The Options > Build > Byte Order Marker option makes no difference. I've tried creating a new, empty project and trying to import the same Word doc, and there's no prob...

Re: Which has fewer bugs? 32bit or 64bit?

Yup. About the PDF preview.. I started doing that because the way the topic looks in the XML editor is not always how it looks in the PDF output. When I noticed the discrepancy, I started keep the PDF preview open. I might be getting a little over-cautious here, but I'm thinking perhaps disabling Au...

Re: Externally referencing project resources

Oh, yikes. This seems to defeat the entire purpose. I have a team of ~20 writers, and multiple people will be working in each child project. Not to mention the technical editors that work in all of them. Being able to point a child to the parent from source control seems like the obvious (only?) so...

Re: Which has fewer bugs? 32bit or 64bit?

Just an update in case it helps anyone: Don't keep the PDF preview window open. I've stopped doing that and things seem much better. And either don't use Flare's built-in source control at all, or commit and push before you do any renaming or moving of files, lest you want to risk not being able to ...

Re: Sequence contains more than one element

Flare 2019 r2, git/Azure here. Same issue. I can't open my project at all because of this error. I can't be bothered doing their work for them with the bug reports etc. anymore. It's not like they fix them! Looks like this has been around for years (some say a decade!) And the bronze support... I'm ...

Re: Flare interface behaviour / delay

Hi Choccie - No, everything's on the local (SSD) drive. I'm using git for source control and pushing to remote git hosting at Microsoft DevOps, but that hasn't been problematic for me. Over the weekend, I think I've found the thing that is most contributing to the odd behaviours I've been seeing. I ...

Re: Strong, bold, or span.bold? and then some

I was wondering about this too. I've resorted to using inline <b> tags because I can't seem to find a keyboard shortcut way to wrap a selected piece of text in <span class="bold">. (Doing a lot of importing from old Word docs that has all its content laid out in tables (I know!), so my wor...

Re: Margin settings vs margin-left/right/top/bottom

In CSS, the "margin" property is shorthand to allow all four margins to be defined in one declaration. One starts at the top, then goes clockwise. So... margin: 1em 2em 3em 4em; ...defines a 1em margin at top, 2em for right, 3em for bottom, and 4em for left. There's also shorthands for the...

Re: Drag and Drop import causes problems with file paths

Apologies if I didn't understand something 100%, but I think that drag-and-drop behaviour (updating links) is desired. If that's turned off, then when moving a topic or any other file in your project from one location to another (within the project), the links will be broken. But I'm guessing this i...

Re: Spellcheck broken?

I've seen that happen also and the behaviour seems a bit random. I've altered my workflow to not rely on spellcheck-as-you-type and I run a manual check at the end of topic. However, if you suspect that's not working either, you might have to close the topic and open it again, or close Flare and ope...

Re: Which has fewer bugs? 32bit or 64bit?

I get really strange things and encounter a LOT of bugs. The crashes don't matter so much to me... as you said, you can work around those. Just now, I'm looking at a ToC that references a particular PDF (it's an engineering drawing that I add at the end of the manual, with a mini ToC). I'm looking a...

Which has fewer bugs? 32bit or 64bit?

Anyone have experience with both and know which has fewer issues? I'm using 64bit on Windows 10 and when it works, it's the best tool I've seen... but it's the flakiest commercial software I've ever used.

I'm a new flare user, having started my eval in November 2019 and am now in Jan 2020, using Flare 2019 r2, 64bit on Windows 10, and OH MY GOD this is buggy. I submitted I think 4 bug reports during the trial period... but now that my projects are getting bigger and there are way more targets to deal...

Flare interface behaviour / delay

Does it seem to anyone else that there is a significant delay between what the interface is showing you and what seems to be actually active in Flare? It's like there's race conditions going on in the background all the time, and it's not just the preview window, except that's where it's most notice...

Re: How does Flare decide if a file is missing in Broken Lin

Thanks for that, Dave. That's useful to know... I came back here to post an update. I managed to resolve the problem by going to the topic in question and making an edit that would have no effect to the output (add whitespace somewhere outside of a tag). Flare sees the file has changed. When I saved...

How does Flare decide if a file is missing in Broken Links?

In the Broken Links report, I'm trying to figure out why I've got so many false positives (it's 100% in my project, false positives). Is Flare using properties of the file (or its hash signature.. I'm using git for source control) beyond its path and name? Because the file is there -> it's showing i...
