Like wclass, I find Word's Compare tool handy or essential on occasion.
In practice for tracking revision of all our Help projects we use a method that has not been mentioned here. It may not be elegant but it enables us to track changes through all previous versions, whether last changed months or ...

100% CPU usage on Saving a topic
(cf. merrill77's post on 100% CPU every time I type : http://forums.madcapsoftware.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=9958)
I'm getting almost 100% CPU usage for about 35 seconds whenever I Save a topic after editing.
Has anyone else come across this delay? (As if some other process is triggered by doing so ...

Re: 100% CPU every word I type
Thanks, Andrew
As Rick's question implied, perhaps Flare's version has something to do with this.
I've submitted a query to MadCap Tech Support - we'll see what happens...

Re: 100% CPU every word I type
an "IntelliSense" pop-up ... so I turned it off
Thanks for sharing the solution, merrill77! :D
Disabling IntelliSense fixed the same problem at once for me:
Around 97% to 98% CPU usage for about 35 seconds from start of typing.
Windows XP Home with SP3, Celeron 2.3GHz, 1GB RAM.

Re: nested CHMs not searchable
We've written the instructions and gained confidence in the method. Next, our publishing colleagues will review that, perhaps try it out for the French Help set and decide whether to adopt it as our standard procedure for enabling 3-level Help across all language variants.

Re: nested CHMs not searchable
Pete,
Thanks for that note of caution. Fortunately we're not using either of those irreversible features at the moment.
However , that might well affect anyone who reads this and thinks they can achieve 3-level Search safely.
Also as you advise we will apply a once-off fix to each Help-version ...

Re: nested CHMs not searchable
Pete Lees,
It worked! :D
The problem was just info. overload - I had too much info about nesting (not a problem) and recursion was in there somewhere.
Anyway I started afresh and applied the relevant instructions.

Re: nested CHMs not searchable
Thanks, Pete Lees. [I have stripped down this post, to focus on the solution]
I confess that when I evaluated Flare in May 2006 I did not spot that FTS was missing for recursively nested CHMs.

Re: _recursively_ nested CHMs not searchable
Thank you for all contributions so far! I should have been referring to the Project (HHP) file. Now I am trying to understand exactly how to apply that advice.
This is not just about nesting CHMs - that works fine - but about nesting again to a 3rd level with Full Search at all levels:

Thank you each for your replies. May we start again, please? :?
AFAICT:
a. Flare (whether v2.5 or v4) does not support Search on CHM Help files nested to more than 2 levels.
b. The solution lies in adding those files manually to a [MERGED FILES] section of a CHM.

Thanks, KevinDAmery & Dave Lee. I'll bear in mind the use of a proxy when I next need to include a dynamic Glossary.
Back on the Indexing topic :)

Thanks for your comments, Richard & all.

Re: Creating index entries
Perhaps a 'top-down' designer supposed that the Index comes into being fully-formed before the mere topics, so its entries can easily be dragged into the topics in due course!
Anyway, Flare's rag-bag of Index-related features, plus lack of Browse Sequences & Glossary worthy of the name ...
