Re: Mimic (& Capture) doesn't capture application
I am having the same problem with Mimic and Capture on a .NET program. It seems to be invisible to Mimic & Capture although the program name shows up in their lists. Any idea what .NET setting needs to be changed. There's nothing in the .NET project file that indicates any setting that would ap...

Re: screen captures: how to get the best quality
I didn't say it was bad; merely that it wasn't better than other decent downsampled graphics. For example, I cannot tell the difference between my Flare screen shots printed from PDF, or old ones captured and resized in Word. Hi Andrew I've never printed from Flare, so I can't comment on that. Howe...

Re: screen captures: how to get the best quality
1) I don't know how Word does it, but it really is excellent at retaining detail when you resize. Unfortunately, there's no way to keep that quality when you copy the resized image out of Word. Word uses some "tricks" to make its screen images look better, but I'm pretty sure it's only tr...

Re: screen captures: how to get the best quality
Are you shrinking the image before putting it into Flare or using Flare to shrink the image from its original size? In either case, the quality will fluctuate more than if the image is inserted at 100% of its captured dimensions. For instance, if your application screen size is 1024 x 768, for exam...

Re: Mimic (& Capture) doesn't capture application
I had the same problem, and it was a setting in the DevX tools that made the window look transparent to screen capturing programs. If you are using DevX and .Net, I can find out what the issue was and let you know.

Re: Best way to insert screenshots in Flare
SnagIt is fine, but I find it too cumbersome to fire up the editor in case I did not use the SnagIt capture function. I use SnagIt often, but for the heavy lifting I still use my old and crusty PaintShop Pro 6. That application is old, but it just does the job very nicely. I use PSP9. Besides easy ...

Re: Do Screen Captures make sense?
Interesting thread, thanks! I tried the route of no screen shots for a few years. One reason was time constraints - marketing would only get the final imagery (icons, logos, etc.,) to development at the last moment, and the screens were then incorrect. However, I did buy into the idea that duplicati...

Re: Is there a way to include the cursor at capture?
Most tools I used previously have an option to include or exclude the cursor, and this is an issue for me.
I'm in a section explaining how to adjust a column width, and I want to show how the cursor changes shape when you move onto the column border.

Re: Control over PDF image compression?
I don't know if this will help, but here goes. Regarding PDFWriter ... Adobe Acrobat used to include a printer driver called PDFWriter. This printer driver was dropped as of Adobe 6.0 (version 5.0 for Mac). PDFWriter was a simple approach to PDF generation, meaning it was designed for text document...

Re: Control over PDF image compression?
For PDF Writer, you need to tell the document to Print, then go into Properties in the print job. The second tab gives you compression options for images, including various levels of JPEG as well as ZIP (ZIP of course is lossless). OK thanks, I know about those, but they still don't give good image...

Re: Control over PDF image compression?
It can be done (our graphics person here does it routinely) but Adobe hides the control for it deep in the print output settings, where you aren't going to casually come across it. If you know where to look it's not hard at all, but if you don't know where to look you'd have to be pretty persistent...

Re: Output file size (CHM)
Do you keep any files in the Content folders that you don't actually use in the output? e.g. old images or different formats of images that you don't use. Flare will include everything in your Content folders, all files are included even if they aren't referenced or linked to from the topics or sty...

Re: Output file size (CHM)
Hi there Thanks for your replies, guys. I thought that in Flare, we might have been able to control the amount of compression but from what you are saying it is not feasible (I just do not know enough about the back end ~ Microsoft proprietary CHM compiler). To answer some questions, the CHM sizes ...

Re: Output file size (CHM)
I'm just curious: does the file size problem persist in v4 in your testing? I have a formerly RHx5 project (about 6000 topics) that I now edit in Flare. The size of the CHM files are comparable (both around the 5MB range), but I use only a dozen small graphics in the entire thing. My converted proj...

Re: Output file size (CHM)
I switched a few years ago from RH to Flare, and there was no appreciable difference in the file size of both large and small projects. I would guess the issue is with screen shots, although I wouldn't know where to look. One way to find the issue is to make a small project with one topic and screen...

Thanks for all the suggestions!
Actually, Mimic is perfect for the job in terms of its feature set. It just has issues with the quality of the output, which I am hoping will be corrected in the near future.

Re: Screenshots Only, Can I Change the Frame Size?
Hi, The toolbar is a skin that is completely customizable for Flash and Silverlight. The madcap logo is only there to show as an example how one may wish to put a company logo with a link to a !Help| About type dialog. The controls also can be replaced by custom images. For the other points, RamonS...

Re: Is Mimic Worthwhile?
If you need a solution now, and you don't want to go with Captivate (which does cost $699 per license), you could check out Camtasia Studio by TechSmith. (I won't link there, as they are a MadCap competitor, but you can Google it. Camtasia seems to be a pretty good product for less than half Captiv...

Re: Is Mimic Worthwhile?
In regards to Flash output, the security settings seem to be an IE issue due to the asinine and entirely flawed 'security' design of IE. Any application generating Flash output runs into this issue and it is squarely and fully due to IE being a very very bad browser that should not be used. I canno...

Re: Is Mimic Worthwhile?
It depends on what you want to do with Mimic. I think it is usable to create a bare bones demo sequence of a windows desktop app. Now, if you want special play controls, fancy callouts, whacked out transitions, or anything that just slightly goes in the direction of eLearning, then I agree that Mim...
