Device compatibility
We are currently looking at a mobile webhelp solution for a new product. The web-based product will work with most smart phones and we are trying to figure out what the flare help will work with and what it won't. Does anyone have a good idea as to which smart phones OS's we might run into trouble w...

Re: Search Displays Blank Titles That Open XML
I believe I have found the problem and what to do to fix this, although I'm not sure how this will affect very large projects where the solution may not be desirable. 1. Open your target file in Flare (MyWebHelp(Primary). 2. Select the Performance tab. 3. Un-check "Chunk Large Search Database F...

Re: Search Displays Blank Titles That Open XML
further testing confirms that anything with "is not" inside of text like "test test is not test test" will produce the problem. It looks like it is searching the index XML and finding "is not" and spitting that xml out multiple times. You can see for yourself at http://...

Re: Webhelp - can only edit topics in Text Editor - help!
Try this: 1. Open a topic in Flare (in the Content Explorer). It should be in a Text Editor. 2. Click the X next to the topic tab above the edit window. 3. Now double-click the topic again in your Content Explorer. Does this fix it? I've found that if you open a topic in the text editor once it defa...

Re: Search Displays Blank Titles That Open XML
I have the same exact issue and it occurs when a user enters a long string... our QA hit it with "db is not pre-sized appropriately" in the "Search ALL Help" field. Our help is not imported (all from scratch) and I've tested it with existing Help we have written over the past yea...

Using Flare version 6 and version 4.2 on the same machine
Our company recently upgraded to version 6. Long story short, we need to be able to run both version 4.2 and version 6 on the same machine. Is this possible? Are there any complications I should consider first?

Re: I need help with my help! Merging.
I'm not sure why you would merge Flare Project files. If you want to merge the contents of projects, that is an easy (relative) thing to do.. Backup both project folders, all of it. Create a new project in Flare. Look in your contents folder at the modified dates on the HTML (and the CSS and other f...

Re: 3 things I can't figure out - or 4
I find the editor to be very responsive. I did have to remove the pop-ups and other annoying "features" but I find it at least as easy to use as Word 2007 and actually I would HATE for MadCap to replicate Word, which is meant more for college papers than professional writing. I like the co...

Re: Is there an easier way to edit the raw XML?
Other than right-clicking a topic and choosing to open it in Notepad, is there an easier way to enter tags and raw XML into your topic? I've been adding RSS feeds, custom backgrounds, embedded video, etc to my CHM files via notepad for awhile now because I haven't seen the option to actually enter ...

Re: Customer wants to print topics with drop-downs
What is happening is a customer is printing the whole .CHM file from the top node and all the text within the drop down is left out of the printing. We have had several customer calls on this in the past couple of weeks and if it is possible I would like at least like to know that it is something I ...

Yes, the customers want to be able to print individual Help topics with the drop-down text expanded by default.

Help not displaying correctly on XP SP3
I have a customer who, after loading SP3 on a XP Professional machine, cannot use the Index or Search tab in our Help system. I don't think this is a Flare issue, but has anyone else run into this? Is there anything on my end I can do to make it work or is there a workaround I can give the customer ...

I found the problem. I have a style we call Spacer that we put in before and after tables in our documents. When Flare reached one of these spacer styles, the import failed. I removed all the spacer styles from my document and the import completed. The style is 8pt Arial Narrow, superscript, 0 befor...

Word importing + tables
When I import my Word document no errors are presented, but no topics are created for anything that follows the first table encountered. When I delete that table and re-import, it continues until it reaches the end of the next table. It actually gets the table into the topic, but then stops complete...

that would be a good solution if I was a lone writer, but I have several independent contractors that provide me with the finished guide in Word format and I don't have the luxury of re-writing their doc in Flare. I'm currently looking at automated scripts to allow me to single source the content th...

single-sourcing
I create Word documents that are coverted to PDF's for distribution. As a part of our single-sourcing effort, these documents are ported into a Help generation system that allows me to designate certain styles as dropdowns (and the text that follows is contained in the drop-down until it meets anoth...
