How simple is the workflow? Possible to share a license?
I've been away from Flare since v4 but may be returning in the next few months. All the content for my new client lives in Word. They have mentioned moving to something "more professional". I don't have a handle yet on their products, their clients, or their internal workflow, so I'm not s...

Re: Images appearing with a "._filename.png"?
If you're working on a Mac, you may also encounter .DS_Store files in your Windows directories. Here is some information on those files:

Re: Whose help is this anyway?
Well, phooey. Upgrading is not an option, at least not today. If it's not possible to build this into the UI as a 3.1 bug fix, then is it possible for MadCap to publish directions on how to make the modifications manually? I know that Lisa posted an older-version workaround (back in 2/2007, on page ...

Re: Whose help is this anyway?
If I understand Mike's post from July 3rd correctly, then the unwanted behavior will largely be gone IF you are using Flare 4 and DotNet Help Viewer 4. What if you're still using 3.1? ... The plan right now is to alter the DotNet Help viewer to make it more in line with the requests we have received...

Re: Apply a style to a Variable
Hmm... Richard, do you mean that you cannot apply formatting in the variable definition itself or that you cannot apply a span to a variable that is inserted into a topic? I know that you cannot apply formatting to a variable (or associate a stylesheet with it), but that you can do both with a snipp...

Re: Apply a style to a Variable... and snippets, too
I've encountered this irritation with both variables and snippets. I'm in Flare 3.1. I hadn't thought of applying the span to a neighboring character, then dragging the snippet/variable inside the span. I had tried selecting characters before, after, or both, then applying the span to see if that wo...

Re: Master page not "taking"
Kevin, Ain't it the truth? I've driven developers crazy asking them how lists are populated (I want specific, not general information) but knowing where the values come from can certainly help, especially when the data may "look" like other data. A bit off topic, but a few years ago I didn...

Master page not "taking"
I'm using Flare 3.1 I used to have two master pages. One was the default and one was "noCrumbs". noCrumbs, which has no breadcrumbs proxy, was assigned in Topic Properties/Topic Style Class to a group of topics. In the output, the noCrumbs topics appeared without breadcrumbs and the rest o...

Re: Accordion selector?
I've tried these settings, but something seems to be missing. I started out with the delivered Blue skin, so my accordion items are the same as the Flare UI: each item is a light-to-medium blue vertical gradient. When you hover, they are a medium-to-light orange vertical gradient. When you click and...

Re: Failed to run command 'Copy'
I realized just now that I hear one of two sounds when the "Failed to run command "copy"" message is generated: The first -- on my system it is a slightly quieter, modest sounding little beep -- indicates that the copy really did fail. The other sound -- more of a "phoomph&q...

Re: What is .DS_Store?
Wow. I *never* would have guessed that. Yes, I'm running Flare 3.1 in XP via Parallels/Boot Camp on a Mac. The files do not appear in the Mac Finder windows, only on the Windows side, in both Flare and Windows Explorer. When I can't copy in Flare (a different thread in this Forum), I have sometimes ...

Re: What is .DS_Store?
Yes, I've opened it in Notepad. It's gibberish, which suggests to me that Notepad can't read it. When I open it in the Internal Text Editor, it's completely empty.
I'm in 3.1.

I've noticed a file named .DS_Store in several of my Content subfolders. What is this files and can I safely remove its various instances? Can I rearrange the tabs for open files? (Flare 3)
Is there any way to rearrange the order of the tabs for each open topic in the XML editor? I know I can use Ctrl-Tab to cycle through the tabs, but I'd like to be able to just drag the sixth tab next to the second tab.

Hi all -- Check out this thread: http://forums.madcapsoftware.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=5128&p=26698&hilit=snippet+%3Cbody%3E#p26698 It has a very clear explanation (including code samples) from doc_guy about what happens in the code when you create a and then insert a snippet and tells y...

Re: Difference between toggler link & drop down
Jane, This confused me, too. I posted a similar question a few months ago and received some very good responses, including information on how to use drop-downs and togglers within lists (and get the numbering you want), and a few bits about using them in tables as well. Here is the thread: http://fo...

Re: Failed to run command 'Copy'
Thanks, All -- Here are a few responses and an update: I don't know how Macs handle the .NET framework. Re: Failed to run command 'Copy'
Relaunching Flare has no effect. Rebooting Windows sometimes, though not always, resolves the issue. To clarify: this occurs *only* in Flare. It doesn't occur in Word or Notepad or any other Windows app. When it does occur in Flare, it does *not* occur in the internal editor. So my usual recourse wh...

Failed to run command 'Copy'
Nearly always, when I try to copy something... anything... I receive this message: Failed to run command 'Copy'. Exception: Requested Clipboard operation did not succeed. Re: Togglers and drop-downs
If you're putting the togglers into tables, then the table structure should still hold when you output to print. The way I understand it, you'd see the toggled text the same way (and order) you have it written in the topic. Ahh... so now I've done some testing. And yes, my toggler-revealed 2-col ta...
