Re: Top part of screen disappearing
Just lost the top part again and thought I'd return here to see whether anyone had experienced the same problem. Thanks for the helpful thoughts.

Top part of screen disappearing
Have Flare 9. About once per day, the top part of the screen (with all the drop-down menus) blanks out, and I can't figure out how to bring it back other than to click the red X and restart the program. Anyone else have a similar experience?

Customizable help
We use Flare to build web-based help that ships as a separate installation with our product. From time to time, customers ask when they'll be able to add their own documents and customized instructions to the help. Does anyone here ship help that customers are able to edit according to their needs?

Re: Renaming .htm files
All of the topics except one were without links, so I avoided that headache. Thanks for taking the time to explain the possible reason for the error messages. Sounds correct to me. I wanted to stay in Flare, but 7 out of 10 tries, I got the error. From Explorer, I was able to rip through the folders...

Re: Renaming .htm files
The former. Sorry for the confusion. As I try to rename the files, about 2/3 of the time I get an error message that the name is too long (even if I chop it down to a few words) and something about a catapult. (How's that for being technical?) So even though I'm able to rename successfully about 1/3...

Renaming .htm files
My project contains a load of topics that require ridiculously long titles, but I need the corresponding .htm titles to be half the size. What's the best way to shorten the .htm titles, simply by renaming?

Re: Capture with Flare 9
Thank you for the replies. Our IT department just upgraded us to Flare 9 (from 6.1), but when I tried to insert a new screen capture, I got the message that I need to be licensed to Capture. So it sounds as though I need to download it myself or check back with IT? Thanks, again.

Capture with Flare 9
Forgive me if I've misread the new feature notes, but is Capture supposed to be bundled "free" with Flare 9?

Re: What box am I forgetting to check?
Thanks for the thought, Mr. Thief. I've done exactly that, but as Mr. I-Tietz has suggested, for webhelp output, it appears that all files are processed regardless. I created a condition to exclude all topics that don't belong (about 98% of them), then applied the condition en masse through the file...

Re: What box am I forgetting to check?
Many thanks, Mr. Tregner. Would've worked perfectly, except I must have a version of Flare (6.1--I know, we're way behind the times) that doesn't offer that feature. Have looked all around the Target Editor but can't seem to find. Maybe it's right in front of my nose (been known to happen)? Thanks, ...

What box am I forgetting to check?
I have one giant project with one giant TOC built as one giant webhelp output. From that giant project, I have several PDF outputs, each of which generates in a jiff. I also have a second webhelp target and a TOC that is a mere fraction of the master TOC. When I build to that target with the mini TO...

Re: Multiple Root Elements?
Thanks for suggesting that I post the code. After posting the first 7 lines (see below), I wondered why I hadn't compared the code with the code for a similar topic (concluded I'm a slow thinker) and did so, discovering that line 6 was missing </head> and line 7 was missing <body>. Thanks, again. Al...

Multiple Root Elements?
In trying to open a topic that has been part of the help project forever, I'm getting an error that says the file contains invalid XML ... "There are multiple root elements, line 6, position 6." I'm asked whether I want to open the file as text. I open it as text but can't tell what's wron...

Thank you for the reply. Yes, essentially looking for a content management system, but I don't feel smart enough to get off to an efficient start in the quest. As regards the second half of your reply, amen.
Thanks, again.

With each software release, our help is merged with the software. Customers install the software on their own servers; consequently, they don't see the latest help until they've downloaded and installed the latest software. In the field, we have trainers who often write their own instructions or tra...

Re: What's the shortcut key to start a recording?
Support reports that it's an issue with the DPI setting. Can't be larger than 100%, but no way could I work all day with such a low DPI; my eyes would go batty. Anyway, support has submitted a bug report on my behalf. Thanks for taking the time to respond to my posts.

Re: Who's using Mimic?
I'll be surprised if Mimic ever becomes more than a bit player in the marketplace of software simulation tools. Too many other products seem to get the job done with a lot less fuss.

Re: What's the shortcut key to start a recording?
Thanks, again, for your willingness to consider this issue (this forum tends to be dominated by the sound of crickets). I've attached two images: the first shows the crop borders visible with the record button nowhere in sight; the second shows the bottom crop border moved up (referee cropped out of...

Re: Who's using Mimic?
Appreciate the response. One more question: What version of Mimic are you using? We purchased a license to v2 long ago, and the product was maddeningly buggy, so we gave up on it.

Re: What's the shortcut key to start a recording?
Thanks very much for the response; unfortunately, with the v6 trial, I'm unable to use the red record button unless I crop a small area well up from the bottom border of the screen. If I need to crop a larger area, the record button disappears below the bottom border, and I can't get to it. Mimic he...

Who's using Mimic?
Just wondering, does anyone out there use Mimic routinely? A perusal of this forum would suggest the product isn't a big seller. Do you incorporate Mimic movies in your help? As Flash files? Silverlight? If you use the product routinely, what version do you use? Very curious. Thanks.
