Re: PPT output

Hi Pat: Serious question, no snark intended. I just read the case study that Madcap emailed about your implementation, and I would like to know how your group progressed from your comments here in November to the present. We are beginning to single source training guides from our techdoc/help, but w...

Re: Merged Help problems - js errors and broken links

Here is followup: Madcap Support submitted both of these problems as bugs. They suggested the 'merge.txt' workaround for problem 1 and for problem 2 said we would need to use Flare 7 until a fix is available. I don't have time or the expertise to try to debug the javascript to see what has changed o...

Merged Help problems - js errors and broken links

We have two significant problems with out merged help system and Flare 8.1.2. (I have filed support requests with Madcap and both issues have resulted in bug reports filed by support.) I am Interested in knowing if anyone has experienced this. Problem 1 When the a topic in a slave CHM in the merged ...

Re: Flare help...why is it no better than anyone else's?

I would echo some of both + and - comments so far, with emphasis on the weak Help Search feature that returns scads of topics without any weighing. That is my biggest gripe, but it is not unique to Flare - unfortunately when I produce CHMs for our software, that search is junky too - the search engi...

Bug in Project Analyzer?

Before filing a bug against Project Analyzer (the inherent version, not the option) on 7.2, I wanted to check with the Forums to see if this was already a recognized defect. (important points bolded.) When the track changes feature first came out, I tried it out on a large number of projects to see ...

Re: Flare 6.1 and FM10 Issue - Flare cannot find FM

I have a similar issue with Flare 7.2 and Framemaker 10 as part of TCS 3.5 I tried to import a Frame 10 book to Flare and got a message that the frame files were not the version Flare expected. I can get past this 'can't find framemaker' issue by opening Framemaker 10 prior to importing. But the nex...

Re: Is it possible to have project notes within Flare?

My only concern with keeping it in the project right now is that it would slip out with a build. While it may not be linked to anything the search will still find it. I work on a few (non-documentation) projects only once in a while and for those I keep a to do list as flat file. What else other th...

Re: Framemaker people: Is Flare worth it?

I echo the previous response, but this statement you made gives me pause: "I integrate with Autodesk Inventor Publisher" I don't know what the implications are for this - in what manner Flare would need to integrate with this. If this is just a matter of passing PDFs to it, no problem. But...

I have seen this and if your problem is the same as mine, I think it is an editor glitch that is transient. When I open a topic and it opens like this, I click on the either the Mode or Medium button in the XML Editor Toolbar and the topic returns to normal. I don't think there is anything wrong in ...

But I am not using source control with Flare! I think he meant that he closed the Flare Help Pane, rather than leaving it open. It is open in the default factory layout, so if that causes pings, closing it might help.

Re: Flare 5.01 and Distiller 9 producing weird fonts

We will try a re-install. But the plot thickens. We have a new contractor, same basic setup with Frame 8, Acrobat 9, Flare 5.01. Flare installed last. She is getting the same dbATXX+ fonts. But in her PDFs, they look fine. Turns out on close inspection, in the first writer's PDFs, the font letter ar...

Flare 5.01 and Distiller 9 producing weird fonts

We have one writer who was "upgraded" to Acrobat 9 by our IT, and he is experiencing font issues on PDFs produced through Flare, but not on PDFs produced via Framemaker. His Flare PDFs are full of fonts named like dbATXX+Arial (Embedded). None of these fonts actually exist on his system, b...

Re: How do I edit a whole index?

Take a look at View>Index Explorer, if you haven't. It lists every index entry in the project in a tree view that you can click to see which files each index entry is in. You can see it all, and check parallelism, spelling, duplicates, etc. But you can't edit it in place - you have to open the topic...

Re: Numbers and bullet styles not showing on FM import

Probably bigger fish in the fry-o-later for improving FM import and PDF targets at the time. I would expect this to be an enhancement soon, because for customers who want to synchronize FM documents to Flare (which effectively prohibits editing in Flare) this is a problem if not a stumper. But if yo...

Re: Numbers and bullet styles not showing on FM import

Generally Greg is right, but where it matters is that Flare autonumbers do not format lists with decimal aligned numbers. (Not that I can figure out anyway - I wish I was wrong but I can't find a way - if I am wrong I would be glad of administered correction and admonition.) This means that paragrap...

Re: TFS, folders, and naming

You can eliminate one level of folders by picking "do not use Content folder in output" on the advanced tab of your target. That would be a quick way of complying with their request without spending a bunch of drudgery time and messing up your folders. But...if you are using URLs to link c...

Re: how do you right-align numbered list items?

In Frame you can make changes to the para style for the (formerly) li format to align on the decimal. Once you get one that looks right, you can update all. In my test, in the paragraph designer, I needed to add a new tab stop at .15, set that as decimal, then go to the numbering tab and change the ...

Re: Best approach for Webhelp and PDF from a single source

I don't disagree with what has been said, but I think it is easier to string help topics together to create a book than it is to break up book content to create coherent help. I think if you take a topic-based approach, write good topics, and make a Help TOC that works, you can then use Flare's TOC ...

I think the problem is that you have it assigned as a master page. try changing that setting back to default to let the page layout assignments in your TOC do the work.

Have you looked at passthrough markers in Frame? Flare help actually talks about using these to put info in a Frame doc that comes through in the import process. It says you can have Flare treat the passthrough marker as a complete XML tag. Maybe that would allow what you are looking to do. I discla...

Re: Multiple Topics per PDF Page?

Implicit in your question is that all of your topics start with an H1 of some sort. In most cases, the .css in Flare has H1 styles set in PrintSupport in the print medium as page-break-before = always. That is why you are getting a page break per topic in PDF. One approach would be to create another...
