Thank you for the idea! What occurred was very interesting.

Re: Flare using HUGE amounts of RAM
As mentioned above, Flare seems to have memory leaks. I usually restart it before generating the output of large projects.

Re: Placing figures (and captions) at top of their pages?

Re: Maintaining Multiple Versions of a Document
You can make a copy of the whole folder structure of your project and give it a different name (e.g. a name that incorporates the version number). You can then continue to update one of the two copies to the current version of the software, while keeping the other as an archive. Flare regards them ...

Yes, those are the pagelayouts i'm talking about.

Are you using the PageLayout tool? With that, you can make the text (and image?) display in a certain spot on a page.

Re: stop flare trying to connect to the internet
I believe Flare "phones home" at regular intervals to verify that its license is valid. If you stop it by blocking it with a firewall or other similar method, most likely the program will detect this and simply exit or crash. Older versions of Flare did the same thing also when the computer was ...

Placing figures (and captions) at top of their pages?
In the most common printed book layout, each text figure is placed at the top of its page, followed by the figure caption, and then by the page text, which continues from the previous page and reflows to fit the remaining text frame space under the figure. This is so common that one implicitly comes ...

Multi-volume project problems
I must publish the PDF output of a large project as three separate volumes. It is not really important whether I obtain three separate PDF files (which I don't know how to get from Flare from within a single target) or a single PDF file that I then split manually in Acrobat Pro.

Re: Forcing pictures to the top of page?
You can make the image (or image paragraph class) style have page-break-before: always.
I don't think that will move the surrounding text, though.
Exactly, that is my problem: a variable portion at the bottom of the preceding page will remain empty if I use page-break-before (or in the worst ...

Forcing pictures to the top of page?

PNG files converted to JPG in PDF output???

Search-and-replace in a given XML tag
I need to perform search-and-replace operations of contents and/or attribute values in specific XML tags. This does not seem possible within Flare, so I may need an external XML utility to do this. I need this functionality virtually every day, so it should be common enough among Flare users.

Thanks Bob,
yes, it does in fact work with colons. There is even a note near the top of the Term toolbox that says "Use colons (:) to separate levels". The problem is, the Term toolbox instead inserts semicolons when one types terms and subterms in successive lines in this toolbox.

Re: External Hyperlink to chm in another app?
I have not tested this, but I think that your problem is that the link is broken once the code is compiled (i.e., the CHM file you just compiled is looking in the wrong folder for the external CHM file). If so, try to copy the external CHM file to the Targets\HTMLHelp folder (you must do it after ...
