Re: NEW EDITION of Five Steps to MadCap Flare -- for V10
I'd like to start a user group here. The person to talk to about starting a user group is Nita Beck. She started the very first Flare User Group (in my area) and she has lots of good advice about it. We've found it to be a really fun and engaging exchange of tips, tricks, and knowledge gleaned from...

Re: NEW EDITION of Five Steps to MadCap Flare -- for V10
Hi folks. I completely understand your points and the benefits of having a book in electronic format. I’ve considered a PDF or e-book version of "Five Steps to MadCap Flare" but haven’t done it for various reasons, primarily because of the risk of significant sales losses due to illega...

Hi Shawn. The V9 Supplement was attached to the email I sent you when the book shipped, but I don't mind resending it. Just email me about it and I'll attach the supplement to my reply. (You can email me directly from my website--shown below in my email signature.) Thank you for the compliments. I'm...

Re: First time user - why are HTM pages created for these?
When you import a CHM, you'll get a separate topic (.htm file) for each CHM topic. Now that your content is in a Flare project, you can create whatever type of output you want from it and choose what you want each output to contain. I think the easiest thing to do is to create a TOC that contains on...

Re: Flare 8 Ribbon debate
Lisa, I don't fit the profile you're looking for (I've used Flare since V3.2), but I want to describe my experience with the ribbon anyway. Until Flare 8, I was one of those who resisted upgrading MS Office because of the ribbon. When Flare 8 came out, I decided to try the Flare ribbon. I was really...

Five Steps to MadCap Flare -- only available until 10/15/17
Greetings! I thought you might like to know that the current edition of “Five Steps to MadCap Flare” will not be available for purchase after October 15, 2017 (and I'm not planning to release any new editions). So if you want to purchase the current edition, or need another copy, this is a good time...

Re: Issues with Flare v8 updates
I was getting the identical error, and before submitting a bug report (which I was going to do today), I decided to try installing the update one more time to capture a couple of screen shots. To my surprise it installed okay. You might try it one more time. Maybe they changed the Installer scripts ...

Re: Pulling help content into tool tips
I've written tool tip text (each as a separate topic) and included them in my Flare project to keep everything in one place, but the developers don't pull the tool tip content out of my help topics. I pass them the tooltip files and they integrate them into the app. They have very specific requireme...

Re: Image running through footer of PDF
Andrew, what version of Flare are you using? I had this exact same problem a while ago in an older version of Flare, and spoke to Tech Support about it. What I mentioned in my last post fixed it. However, I cannot seem to re-create this problem in Flare V7.2. It's possible that MadCap has fixed this...

Re: Image running through footer of PDF
Make sure that the image is contained in a paragraph tag. That should fix it. In the following code, the first image reference is what you'd want; the second image reference will cause the problem you are experiencing.

Re: Comments for file tag reports?
I don't know of any way to include the comments in the report; but I can see why that feature would be important if you're passing the report to others, as you are. I also use file status tags and I tend to give them cryptic names like R4R (ready for review). I know what they mean, but others would ...

Re: .js files appearing in Data folder after using Flare 7.0
Passing along a tip from Ginny, a fellow Rochester Flare User Group member ... the extra .js files are needed to support Chrome. If you don't need to support Chrome, you can delete the .js files from the Data folder with no ill effect.

Re: Flare 6.1 and FM10 Issue - Flare cannot find FM
If re-installing doesn't work, I would check with MadCap Tech Support. FrameMaker V10 was released after Flare V6, so I don't know how Flare V6 could know of its existence or what it is called. Maybe the name or location of the FM executable changed. I don't know how Flare "recognizes" tha...

Re: Is the index in Flare help hard to use, or is it me?
It's not you. Are you using Flare on a computer running XP? On a computer running XP, the dark highlight obscures the text of the index entry. On a computer running Vista (and probably Windows 7 also), the text is easy to see because the highlight color is much lighter.

Re: Managing global project linking
Have you considered using Flare V7's External Resources feature to store and maintain the import file? The External Resources feature lets you share and maintain external files among Flare projects, so you don't have to copy an updated file to other projects every time it changes. I don't see anythi...

There's an option in the Report Editor that also lets you print the status report after you generate it. That can be very handy!wclass wrote:As well as using the File List (which I like), you can generate a report to see the file status of each topic.

Re: Condition name won't allow period in Flare 7
I just tried this in Versions 7, 6 and 5. I get the same result in Versions 7 and 6, but Flare allows me to put a period in a condition tag in Version 5. I doubt that MadCap Software intentionally removed this ability. I suspect that this was a bug that appeared while they were working on version 6....
