Re: F10 Not Working on Keyboard to Add Index Entries

Thank you NorthEast! I did try that. I'm not sure what gets in Flare's craw sometimes, but the entire rest of that day, it continued to be a pill. I tried it again yesterday, mind you, without trying any of the lock/unlock key stuff (it's part of the Esc key on my laptop), and it's working just fine...

F10 Not Working on Keyboard to Add Index Entries

Hi all, I successfully added several index keywords in Flare 2023 today, via the fn + F10 keyboard combo. I am 100% sure there is user error in this somewhere, and believe that I mis-typed something because now if I just press only the F10 key, numbers and letters appear above the menu options in Fl...

Re: Cannot build Word target

Wow, man, I think I've hit just about every single reason why Flare won't generate Word documents now. And with the exception of one incident this past spring, I found the fix here in the Flare forums. I got a new laptop, and reinstalled Flare, and this issue came up. Luckily, I found this thread an...

Dueling Settings in the Advanced Fields in HTML5 Target?

HI Flare community, The configuration manager asked me why there is a Content folder in the published output in SVN. He says it wasn't there before. He also wants to know why the final published help is now seven times larger than it was the last time I published. His theory is that the Content fold...

Re: Easy Way to Add scope="col" and scope="row" in Tables?

@trent the thief, Thank you for the reply! I have tried to use Notepad ++ to edit files outside of Flare (while Flare was closed), but an error displayed the next time I opened Flare. I was editing the CSS though, not text in files, so maybe that was why Flare was unhappy? My project is bound with S...

Wow, I can totally see why you are Propellus Maximus! What a brilliant and thorough answer! Thank you, so very much. I am ashamed to say that I didn't even know about WAG, so thank you! I've been on the W3C website so often I was worried they'd put a restraining order out on me. In between the...

Easy Way to Add scope="col" and scope="row" in Tables?

Hi Flare Community! I am a lone writer with a now 1,900+ file HTML5 help project. Many of the files contain simple two-column tables for field and button definitions, where the left column contains the field or button names and the right column contains the definitions of each. I have been told that...

Re: Word: "Build failed: Generation of output can not be....

I just tried it, but no luck. Is it something you have to catch quickly? I started the Word build then walked away for a few minutes, then came back and minimized it and no banana. No pop-up. Would a pop-up just go away without any user interaction? (I'm a dreamer. I want to solve this without havin...

Re: Word: "Build failed: Generation of output can not be....

Maybe connected with this - I had a Word target seemingly stuck embedding images. When I eventually decided to close everything on my desktop, delete output folders and so on, to try again I found an innocuous pop up (underneath Flare) asking if Word should allow a document free rein to change thin...

Rob, thank you for the information, and for the laughs! It's always so nice to discuss things here with other writers who "get it." So, funny thing...maybe not funny, but a thing...yesterday my manager asked me to just attempt to put the online help TOC into a PDF and let 'er rip. Flare di...

Print "Whole Book" From HTML5 Help?

Hi all, I'm pretty sure I already know the answer to this question, but I'm asking it anyway because I'm always amazed at how clever other MadCap Flare users are. I'm a lone writer in charge of a massively large software system. My online help contains more than 1,300 .htm files. In the past, our us...

Re: Need Help Understanding CSS Styles for Lists

Thanks Dave! I did spend some time on the W3C website recently but not for selectors so thank you for calling that out. I will most definitely take a look at that. You hit the nail on the head about lots of styles in the CSS and it becoming hard to maintain and troubleshoot, as that is the exact sce...

Psider and Dave Lee thank you both for your replies! I have to be honest, I signed in this morning thinking nobody would have bothered to reply to my post, so your answers blew me away! Need Help Understanding CSS Styles for Lists

Hello MadCap Flare community! I went to the W3C website to find "best practices" for lists in CSS for HTML. Specifically I was looking at ol, ul, and li. I now understand that ol and ul are the parents and li is the child, which helped considerably. Now I'm struggling to understand where t...

Faster Way to Add Cross References?

Hello fellow technical communicators! I use both MadCap Flare and Freshdesk by Zendesk. In Freshdesk, I can click a button titled TOC, and any of the H1, H2, H3, etc., that are in the article I've written will automatically be generated into a lovely little TOC in the article, wherever I put the cur...

@Shredder thank you for asking! No, I was using the keys on my laptop keyboard.

However, I used the steps described in those links that I put in my original post, and voila!

I signed in today to add that using those older fixes from 2013 still work in 2021. PHEW!

Can't Type Numbers In Fields In Stylesheet

Hi all, I trying to edit values in my primary style sheet (it's the only style sheet in my project), using the advanced view. I have three mediums open (default, non-print, and print). My Flare version is 2021 r2. I cannot type numbers in the fields in the stylesheet editor. I cannot use the Delete ...

Tables With Snippets Don't Display at 100% in XML Editor

Hi all, I have a two-column table stylesheet in my Flare project. Column 1 is labeled Field and column 2 is labeled Description . Tables in my project are always set to 100% width. This has always functioned as expected in the XML editor and in output. Today, however, I noticed that the table in my ...

I have had trouble with that off and on recently but assumed it had something to do with SVN and possibly a slow network. I hope you get it cleared up--that's very frustrating!

Looking for Lessons Learned for WebHelp to HTML5 Transition

Hi all! I am a lone writer with a large help project and I have started the process for transitioning from WebHelp to HTML5 help. Well that is really interesting that you're using HTML5 output because my manager has me doing the research about that. I'll have to add this to my list of "cons." Okay, so my favorite 508 buddy at work read my email message, in which I copied and pasted your original questions, and here's...

Re: ADA Templates from Flare

Hi Jess, We suffer similar pains. I too am a lone writer. I too shoulder a huge load (1,300 help topics and counting). And I must ensure that my output (currently WebHelp and PDF) is Section 508 compliant. I've never even thought to look for an ADA template in Flare. Good idea! Since I don't think t...
