Re: 2019 Flare and DITA
To be fair, the output was far from perfect anyhow. But it might just be good enough for what I'm trying to do. Thanks for the tip! (and thanks to MadCap, my old authorizations are now working again).

2019 Flare and DITA
I haven't been using Flare for a few years. In fact, I stopped using it because I've been very deeply involved in DITA stuff. I have a need however to do some testing with Flare and in looking at Madcap's website now I no longer see DITA as an export option from Flare. Did they remove it? I'm runnin...

Re: Any plans for adding markdown support?
Ramon: In reality both markdown and wiki markup are similar. Markdown is used on stack overflow, github, and other sites, wiki markup yet on others. Both have been around a while, and both have some flaws when doing things like tables. However, both are used all over the place. You're right about on...

Re: Any plans for adding markdown support?
I think the biggest challenge with markdown is there isn't a spec on it. In fact, there are some people interested in making a spec for it, but John Gruber who came up with markdown is being weird. He claims ownership of the term markdown, but doesn't want a spec for it and it more or less bullying ...

So, what's the quality of the resized image when you use the css resize option (I didn't realize you could even do that!).

Re: Is it possible to change the color of a Flare QR code?
No point to include a QR code that only the author can read. I looked through the demos on the logoq, and they look pretty cool, but I was wondering about them. Worse is that nearly 8% of males have color blindness, which dominate the engineering fields, which is the area I tend to write documentat...

Re: Flare PDF output
I know of no way to automatically resize during PDF generation. Have you thought about automating the resizing? With tools like the excellent (and free) xnconvert (http://www.xnview.com/en/xnconvert/), all you would have to do is setup a batch entry and point it to you original images (I would also ...

Re: Is it possible to change the color of a Flare QR code?
Flare is using the basic QR code. What Shawn is looking for is logoq, which takes a stock QR code and then overlays the colors and image. http://www.qrcode.com/en/codes/logoq.html I would recommend that you put in a feature request to support logoq. That is the correct term for color and color/image...

Re: Flare's PDF output is a mystery (something chgd from v9-v10)
Shawn did send me a PDF that had issues in crocdocs. I was able to parse it without any issues using some scripts I developed using Ruby... actually, I wrote a very simple one based on some previous work for this, it simply parses the text on each page and displays it. What that tells me is the PDF ...

Re: Flare's PDF output is a mystery (something chgd from v9-v10)
I would be very interested in getting a test document you couldn't parse via crockdocs. My testing shows no difference in the ability to parse PDFs using my scripts. While this doesn't prove much other than crockdocs is using some other tool to parse, I do find this interesting that you can't parse ...

Re: Flare's PDF output is a mystery (something chgd from v9-v10)
Since you are doing this as part of a review for comments, have you thought about having two targets? One for publication and one for internal review? In the internal review don't use the custom font, and use the custom font for the final publication target. Seems to me that would be a suitable work...

Re: show changes in output
One of the more requested features of Flare is the ability to show changes. While I haven't spent a ton of time with Flare 10, I didn't see this option as a new feature. However, here's a trick that somebody came up with that seems to work OK. http://forums.madcapsoftware.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&...

Re: import Javadoc into Flare
I would generate the HTML out of the Javadoc and start there. Since Javadoc files are a combination of code and text, you're better off letting it generate the static content then importing the HTML. Did things change? You mentioned Word and PDF, the last time I looked at Javadoc, only HTML was supp...

Re: MadCap and Open Type (OTF fonts) -Who cares about this flaw?
Try it out. I can't get it to work. But the same font that I can't get to work, MadCap can get to work. I am running Windows 7, so maybe that has something to do with it. But give it a shot and see what your results are. I'm very curious to know if others do or don't see the OTF fonts.

Re: MadCap and Open Type (OTF fonts) -Who cares about this flaw?
Looks like I spoke a bit too soon. Apparently the OTF I used was a Truetype variety initially. Trying a PostScript version of the OTF, it still is missing from my font selector in Flare.

Re: Installed font not showing up in Font Family Picker
Ramon: I have to agree here. But then I worked for Apple for 10 years, so I'm very biased when it comes to branding. Even at my former company we had to use a corporate font which was not Arial or Times. This was embedded into the PDFs, but we were allowed to substitute Arial in online documentation...

Re: Installed font not showing up in Font Family Picker
I fully understand that it isn't a trivial fix but the point is, MadCap Flare has had five years to work on this fix and NONE of their competitors have a problem with OpenType Fonts. As far as I know, none of the "competition" is using .net either. I am curious though, what is the competi...

Re: Installed font not showing up in Font Family Picker
MS did fix the .net limitation, but only with MS OpenType fonts, not with Adobe OpenType fonts (also as I recall, Flare is still using an older version of .net). It's possible that what we really need here is for MadCap to simply update the version of .net, but that's not a trivial thing.

Re: Installed font not showing up in Font Family Picker
You are absolutely correct. I am still a bit bewildered that this is not a big issue for more Flare users. Prior to Flare, I spent ten years in the world of Adobe FrameMaker. If FrameMaker could not use OTF fonts, the users would have gone insane! FrameMaker has been able to use just about ...

Re: Installed font not showing up in Font Family Picker
As mentioned, this is a bug in the .net framework. Since Flare is built on the .net framework it inherits the bug. I know several of the .net developers have been harping on MS to fix this, and to some extent they have. They have fixed .net to work with Microsoft OpenType formatted fonts. So, as it ...

Re: Anybody using Flare with DITA?
John, I don't think you're going to get much argument about Flare being more versatile in so many areas. That said, there's a load of customization that can be (and is being) done in DITA. The real problem is you have to have full-time programmers to make all the magic happen. There's a lot of work ...

Re: Anybody using Flare with DITA?
I have done some converting of content with Flare recently (from MS Word to Flare to DITA). The results weren't stunning, but better than using the copy-and-paste method to get data out of word and into DITA. Since moving to another company (also using DITA), I'm using Flare less and less. That said...

Re: Can AuthorIt and Flare co-exist?
Hi Elizabeth! :) AuthorIT is now using DITA, so that's a plus. However, trying to live in a DITA world and Flare world is a tough act. Mostly because Flare does a great job of importing DITA, but a pretty poor job of exporting DITA. If you're using any of the key options in DITA 1.2 (conkeyref, keyd...
