Re: System XML XMLexception error
I saw this in the Printed documentation topic and posted this response, but since i was building an online output, I will repeat my response here. (Admins can do what they like.) I got this error. I wonder if it has something to do with a bad sector on a disk, or in a file. I could see nothing wrong...

Re: failed to compile document '.', hexadecimal value 0x00,
I got this error. I wonder if it has something to do with a bad sector on a disk, or in a file. I could see nothing wrong with the last file that processed; nothing at Line 19 position 8. So here is what I tried. Maybe you can try it. I copied my Content and Project folders to folder on another disk...

Re: what causes the html code to clump together in Text Edit
It's a inconvenience only, and wondered why it happened.
I am a huge Flare fan, and I've been in tech writing for 34 years and have used a lot of tools. Flare is the best, hands down, because it can be simple and complex - easy to learn, and feature rich to master.

Re: what causes the html code to clump together in Text Edit
I'll keep an eye out for the characters. They are necessary in many cases, especially if I have two variables next to each other like so: <variable1> <variable2>. For some reason, Flare mashes those together too, like so: <variable1><variable2> so I have to put the forced space in like so: <variab...

Re: what causes the html code to clump together in Text Edit
I have a similar question. It doesn't affect the output but makes it harder to parse, especially when debugging. If I have an error in one of these lines, I'll add line breaks to narrow down where the error is. See the attached images (right side cropped out): Line 78 runs on and on in a mash of HTM...

Re: Receiving "Missing File Link for TOC entry" messages
I found it! (A different problem and solution for " Missing File Link for TOC entry "; maybe it can help someone with a similar case) After looking at the TOC every way I could, I slowly read through the entire build log for a clue. I came across the following lines: Generating folder\Site...

Capture cross-hairs are off (inaccurate)
When I use Capture, the cross-hairs do not capture what I "rubber band;" the XY coordinates are off. See attached screen shot. If I use the cross-hair magnifier and locate the corner I want to start with, the magnifier XY coordinates are correct. Pertinent details: Capture 7.0.0 Note: I ha...

Re: TopNav output Search doesn't work
My search didn't work for a while, but for a different reason, so I will post my solution here so someone else can find it and maybe be helped. I looked all over for a switch somewhere, and tried all the other solutions suggested in this forum; I thought I looked everywhere. I discovered that when I...

Re: Change default BMP save to PNG
Thanks. You are probably right about BMP-in-then-BMP-out-by-default.
And the tip about batch format conversion prior to cropping was also a good tip (wish I had thought of it). (an acceptable workaround to what I hoped to do)

Re: Change default BMP save to PNG
I already tried that (and tried it again just now). Maybe its a bug or something. (Capture 7.0.0) I did this: 1. Created a new profile. 2. View > Profiles > Format tab. 3. Changed Format drop-down to PNG. (Now, should this change the default Save as Type on the Save As dialog box? ) 4. Opened a .bmp...

Change default BMP save to PNG
Apologies if this is a repeat but I've looked a lot of places and cannot find the answer. Every time I click Save As... in Capture, I have to change the format in a drop-down from default BMP to PNG (preferred). I believe there is a way to change the default format to PNG which will save me a step t...

Re: Flare 10 bug: Can't handle spans around drop-down hotspots
Austin, We use drop-downs extensively, too. However, we accomplish hiding the drop-down text from print outputs by using a condition tag. I don't think you need a span tag to do what you want, just set up a few conditions. <MadCap:dropDown> <MadCap:dropDownHead MadCap:conditions="Conditions.All...

Re: Style classes in stylesheet are not visible in style window
I placed my cursor on a <p> tag, and went to my Style drop-down chooser to choose H1. In some places, my H1 showed in the list of elements, but when I placed my cursor on another <p> tag in another place in my file, the H1 did not show. The reason, I discovered, was that when H1 did show, the <p> ta...

Re: intermittent Flare 9 lockups
Just installed Flare 9.1. THANK YOU! I was getting delays in Flare 9.0 whenever I checked out a file. The first thing I did with Flare 9.1 was check out a couple of files and it did so very quickly. What a relief! I love Flare 9 and NEED its new features, so THANK YOU for ironing out some of these w...

Location of <a name...> cross-reference tag
In my HTML code, I often encounter code similar to the following, which I believe is generated when I create a cross-reference to the heading in my project. (a) <h1>Membership Users and Groups<a name="Memberships_intro"></a></h1> In the output, when I click on the cross-referenced link, th...

Re: intermittent Flare 9 lockups
Glad to find this in the forum. It has been happening to me. I am glad that I can run Flare 8 and Flare 9 on the same machine, or I'd have to go back. But I need some of the fixes and features in Flare 9. For now, I may do most of my editing in 8! Was the bug reported? Do you want multiple "me,...

Re: Exclude Files
What a PITA. I have a tool that I have to work with that has similar usability issues. What works for me is to be doing two things at one. I interact with the tool every five minutes or so, but I just keep working on other stuff and let the tool run in the background and I interact with it at inter...

You should be sure to log this with MadCap: https://www.madcapsoftware.com/feedback/bugs.aspx?p=Analyzer&v=6.0 In fact, both of you should log this, as items with multiple requests can often receive priority in future versions. Thanks. I did just that. Now, as maddening as it was, I did use Ana...

Re: Exclude Files
I had hoped for a reply, too. I have a large project. (~2100 pages; 4200+ files in the Content folder alone) Even more simple than an exclude file list, there should be a way to scan ONLY when directed to do so. Then I could fix a whole bunch of items, and THEN re-scan. PLEASE stop scanning after ev...

Re: Flare v6.1 and PDF Output
My blood pressure was waxing and my high opinion of Flare was waning, until I read this thread. I now believe Adobe is the culprit. 1. I did Ctrl-Alt-Delete and started the Task Manager. 2. I sorted by process name and lo and behold Acrotray.exe came to the top. 3. I ended its process (pressing the ...

Re: System out of memory exception error popup.
Here is a 2010 update: I have Flare 6.1.0 and also get the Out of Memory error. (I'll try building right after launching the program, but it seems to be hit or miss for me.) :( My project is large (almost 3000 pages in PDF format) but I have 4GB of RAM on a 32-bit Windows 7 system. When it builds, I...

ToolbarItems not showing up on my Mobile Web Help
I really want Next and Previous topic buttons on my mobile web help. I have visited the online help and it tells me how to specify the toolbar item styles but not how to get them to display in my mobile web help. I cannot find a switch that turns them on or off (if there is one). All of the Topic To...

Re: Topic Style Class: concept, task, reference, topic
Thanks for the quick response. It made me wonder why I hadn't found that in online help. So I went to the dialog box and looked for a help button or tag, then guessed at pressing F1 and the dialog box help appeared.
As for its use, I will do some ponderous pondering.

Topic Style Class: concept, task, reference, topic
[Flare 6.1.0] I found the Topic Style Class field on the Properties of content files. I dutifully set each file's field to concept, task, or reference, and then looked around Flare to see where I might make use of my efforts. For example, I might expect that I can let the reader view all Task topics...
