Re: Using git with Flare for first time - best practices?

Hi Shawn,

You can switch off the message about getting the latest in the repository by opening a source control bound project then accessing the File menu > Options > Source Control tab. Tick the checkbox for "Do not prompt to get latest when opening source control bound projects"

Note: I am ...

Re: Flare 2017?

There was communication for 2016r2, but it was one email and that release was about as low key as it could get. 2016r2 seemed to have been released only to support the Central beta phase. 2016r2/2017 are a new release, not an update. As to why some did not get notification, that is a question only ...

Re: Flare 2017?

I am confused, why wasn't I informed via email? I have a maintenance contract.

I do understand. I completely missed the 2016r2 release, and I like to think I keep my ear to the ground for all things MadCap.

MadCap will usually email the person who bought the licence, rather than the person who ...

Re: Flare 2017?

This confused me too. The announcements have been very unclear.
I thought there was an upgrade and was keen to see what new features/bug fixes were included. However, these seem to be separate releases to promote MadCap Central (that I have no use for)...
Very disappointing.

Re: Flare 2017?

I suggest you reach out to Tech Support or Sales. A few months ago, MadCap came out with Flare 2016 r2, aka Flare 13. It wasn't an update to Flare 12; it was a new version. MadCap redid their numbering scheme at that point. (I dunno: maybe they didn't want "13"?) Then a month or so ago, they came ...

Flare 2017?

I just found an announcement for Flare 2017 that Jennifer Morse posted nearly a month ago.

I am confused, why wasn't I informed via email? I have a maintenance contract. Additionally, Flare v12 still states that there are no available updates.

Using git with Flare for first time - best practices?

Hello all,

I finally had time to configure MadCap Flare to our git system but I am haven't a lot of trouble with appreciating this new way for source control.

For instance...
Product stability?
When I configured bind for my first project, MadCap Flare crashed about 1/2 way into the process with ...

I'm not sure why you insist on using a 10 year old anachronistic term like "windoze". Windows 7 and 10 are very capable platforms that deserve accolades for their stability (arguably more stable than either ...

Re: Exporting individual topics for review?

Hello all,

As many of you know, I've been advocating for some type of OS agnostic version of MadCap Contributor. Because MadCap Contributor is a Windows only product and all my SMEs are Linux based, I was forced to find an alternative for real-time content collaboration.

For the past three years ...

Re: Exporting individual topics for review?

Lack of internal review + windoze requirement are the main reasons I've just researched and tried every single other option. I'm likely returning to Flare, which I like a lot apart from these two things, because the alternatives are frankly much worse.
That said, the Mac feature has been in front ...

Re: OS agnostic Flare document collaboration?

Yes, at our company the SMEs also use google docs to collaborate too, which means that I also have the same problem of having to copy/paste stuff into MadCap Flare :(

When you have dozens of SMEs and/or you add content into both the Flare files and the Google Docs synchronization becomes an ...

Re: Flare Wishlist

I think we should use the forum to try out ideas rather than just go straight to a feature request. Sometimes there might be several ways to do something, and discussing it first can help.
I have been caught a few times when some features change because people asked for an update, and I had been ...

I would like this too. R & D are on Macs and some Linux, and our customers are all on Linux/Unix.
I also have to use Googledocs for intenal reviews, etc.
Will log a feature request.

I also recommend replying to the MadCap Central public beta announcement ...

Re: Flare Wishlist

It think it would be nice to have a top post where we can all discuss and solidify our individual ideas on how to improve the MadCap suite (in particular, Flare).

My top request, that I've reminded MadCap via feature requests twice a year, is online document/project collaboration. Such a service ...

Hi Shawn,

Re: Flare output access on Confluence wiki?

Hi!

We are looking into using a wiki and would like to retain Flare.
If you publish into Confluence, do you have a way to pull these pages back into Flare?
Currently we also output to Word and SMEs use the Word Doc to edit, comment.

We are primarily looking for a way to get edited text back into ...

Re: OS agnostic Flare document collaboration?

I'm dying for this feature... at a minimum I need to compile a project on a Unix machine. At my company, R&D is entirely Mac/Linux, except for the technical writers using Flare! As we more closely align with the R&D's best practices, workflow, and tools, this limitation of Flare has caused some ...

There was a change to variables in the last major update - I understand it uses the language in Flare rather than the operating system now. (Note that I can't replicate this problem - short date always worked for me.)

However, I now use the Date/Time variable (look up Custom Date/Time variables ...

I want to use the Flare variable "ShortDate" and I understood that its format is based on the Windows date configuration. Well, this is definitely not what I am observing. I want to see the date appear as 20160722 but Flare is insisting on 7/22/2016 ...

Re: Feature request - edit/save Project Importer topics

As long as it is an option. Your suggestion makes sense for solo authors, but in a team who share files, I'd rather others weren't randomly updating topics that I use in my project. We use Project linking to try to keep things more standard and avoid the ad hoc changes.

If that option were allowed ...

Re: Feature request - edit/save Project Importer topics

Great suggestion. The file is already connected so it shouldn't be difficult to push it back to the original.

I wonder if it's connected to Source Control whether that would make a difference?

Thanks Gary,

I just thought that it made no sense that Flare could not push a changed child topic ...
