Re: Copying and Pasting
Just pasting from Word into Flare will strip all the styling and the paragraphs - which is exactly the problem. No need to pull the text through Notepad first.

Re: Can I replace the Flare XML editor
perhaps a flare editor for dummies (or more to the point, non flare developers) would be useful.
Unfortunately, dumbing the editor down will also dumb the results down. Word's "editor" is pretty much border level to dumb and Word's results are often more a guessing game than a matter of cause and ...

As far as I recall that still strips out the paragraphs / line breaks. Not much gained here.

Re: Copying and Pasting
You are not doing something stupid. Flare removes all formatting upon insert. I understand that to be necessary as Flare otherwise would need to guess which styling to apply. Where I agree with some form of stupidity on Flare's part to exist is with ripping out all paragraphs. A paragraph in Word ...

Re: Whose help is this anyway?
I guess that will then make this thread even longer. This is really the same as the hacks from RoboWizard to ditch all the RH garbage out of help files. I think that hack was one of the best contributions to humanity and yours is right next to it. It is not that people just don't like it that much ...

Thanks for the tip and welcome to the forums!
MadCap, since the solution is now out, any chance to make that permanent in the viewer? I guess this thread clearly shows that customers do not want the splash screen.

Re: Localizing Madcap WebHelp projects
When you use Lingo I think it is as easy as it can get. You see the source and the target side by side and then go at it. Lingo creates a separate project for the translated help so that things don't get mixed up. I did a few test runs with Lingo and found it to be easy enough so that even I can ...

Re: Flare WYSIWYG and actual output
The reason for you not needing to do anything special for IE is because MadCap's devs already did that for us. I get more and more the impression as that we both mean the same in the end, just expressed it differently.

Re: Flare WYSIWYG and actual output
And that is an approach that I somewhat disagree with. Sure, the help should work in any browser, but in order to make it work OK in IE one has to pull special tricks and use different coding (more in IE6 than IE7). Fact is, that this is not a deficiency of the help system, but of the browser ...

There is also a package that makes use of DLL redirects and allows for running all IE versions in parallel from 3.01 on. I use it at work mainly for testing IE5.x, 6 and 7.

Re: Flare CSH Call for PHP
Thanks for adding this to the KB. I plan on making an update at some point so that one can make a decision if the function echos the link or returns only the string. Concatenating a string into an echo may be easier than breaking up echo statements. No time is set yet when I will get this ready for ...

Re: Flare WYSIWYG and actual output
It is a lot to ask and it is even more to ask to have that maintained as with every patch for IE of FF this may or may not change, plus it may or may not change with a Flare update. It also depends a lot on how styles are implemented and which settings one uses (such as %, pixels, ems, inches, cm ...

Re: Network error mesage
Is there a way to VPN into a box back in the office? That way Flare would run on a system that is not affected by the VPN. This is how I connect from home to work using Windows Remote Desktop Connection. It works OK to do some work, but the latency is noticeable and a bit annoying over time. So it ...

Re: Network error mesage
What happens is that Flare tries to access a MadCap server to check the license. Afaik it uses port 80 for that. This is a common error when the licensing server cannot be reached for one reason or another. I am somewhat surprised that there is no KB article about this as it comes up every other ...

I assume that is not the topic that you wanted to show up? I'd clear the output folder and try again as a first step. Also, did you save the project properties before recompile?

Re: Flare WYSIWYG and actual output
The XML editor is just that - an editor - so it's never going to show you everything. For example, using things like absolute positioning or float/clear won't be represented. It also doesn't show a few things that it probably should, e.g. background images, autonumbering, forms.
The preview (and ...

I know that centering an image through the img style doesn't show in the WYSIWYMG editor, the output is fine. I am sure there are other things.

Ah, thanks for the clarification....I seem not to copy and paste much styled text in Flare as I haven't noticed. You are right, that really is bizarre and unexplainable...and yes, unexcusable as well.

Re: Can I replace the Flare XML editor
I second the copy and paste behavior annoyance. I complained about it and it seems that mimicking standard word processor behavior is not desired by MadCap. To some extent I can understand it as it doesn't lend itself well with the tag features - BUT nothing stops MadCap to create different content ...
