Required files for Lingo and best practice questions

Hi there,

We are embarking on a translation journey, with Chinese, Spanish, and Japanese versions of our help system.

I tried to find this info in the forum, but didn't have much luck. Please forgive me if the question has been asked and answered.

I've so far provided my translators with these ...

Re: Calling webhelp in IE

Your file has this line:
<META HTTP-EQUIV="refersh" CONTENT="0;URL=file:.///Product_HELP_CSH.htm?#1">
This may or may not be the issue, but "refersh" probably won't do what you want...

Output message when JS disabled?

A user submitted a bug saying that the Help page is blank when JS is disabled. My response would be "yep, that's correct."

I'm trying to figure out a way to put a <noscript></noscript> tag in somewhere that will show up when JS is disabled so that it will provide a message rather than a blank page ...

Re: Receive Error: 'Style' is null or not an object

I'm running 4.2.0, and just built a Webhelp target.

It is hitting the same code identified in previous posts, and happens in both Firefox and IE7. The offending code, as stated before, is on line 166 of /SkinSupport/MadCapToc.js:

if ( FMCGetChildNodeByTagName( node, "DIV", 0 ).style.display ...

Re: Am I the only one who thinks 4.2 Install takes a long time?

I think the file size of the installer is only an issue for those with slow internet connections

As one who just went from an ISDN line (128k) to 2.8Mb DSL, I hope that I'm no longer in the slow connection category. If so, I really feel for the people around here (Vermont) that have dialup - they ...

Am I the only one who thinks 4.2 Install takes a long time?

I just downloaded Flare 4.2 and installed it.

As with Flare 4.1, the size of the installer package was over 200Mb. In my opinion this package is bloated with unnecessary stuff. After installing 4.1, I sent the following message. I've sent it again for 4.2, with a little more exasperation in my tone ...

Re: text not wrapping around floated image in WebHelp

Sounds reproducible, and probably a bug. There may be a workaround with the right code, but it seems as if it shouldn't be this hard. I'd submit it as a bug. If it isn't, and is by design, (probably more like an unintended consequence of a design) they'll let you know.

Re: text not wrapping around floated image in WebHelp

Not to put too fine a point on it, but one more clarification:

The CSS examples (p.right, div.right, etc.) are rules contained in your CSS file. The browser uses those rules to render the HTML in a particular way (as does the Flare PDF engine).

Re: text not wrapping around floated image in WebHelp

To elaborate on my previous post, you seem to be confusing CSS selectors with HTML class attributes.

If you think of the CSS as selecting particular parts of the code to apply styles to, it is easier to understand.

For example:

p.right selects any paragraph that has the class "right" applied ...

Re: text not wrapping around floated image in WebHelp

<div.right> is not a valid tag, although it might be valid XML if both the opening and closing tag are the same.

It should be <div class="right">...</div>

There should be a generic class in your CSS file that contains the float:right attribute. The rule would look like this:

.right {float: right ...

Re: text not wrapping around floated image in WebHelp

Unless I'm missing something, you could just as easily use <p> tags as <div> tags for the float. (My example uses <p>s, rather than <div>s.) They would just have a different class that contains a float attribute. A <p> element is a block element in the same way a <div> is.

Re: text not wrapping around floated image in WebHelp

Yes, I've reported that as a bug and sent a test project to demonstrate it. I've decided to live with it.

By the way, I realized that my example violated the recommendations of MadCap Customer Support recommendations that you not put the image in a paragraph. In my opinion, this is the easiest way ...

Re: text not wrapping around floated image in WebHelp

Hi there,

I've battled this issue for some time. In Flare 4, it is substantially improved.

A word on the clear property - what it does is clear text-wrapping in response to any previously defined floated entities. The valid values are left , right , or both .

The effect of a clear is to force ...

Re: Formatting of Programming Code Examples

Flare 4 basically makes this problem go away, at least if you are more concerned about the appearance than the underlying HTML.

When you paste code into the XML editor with Flare 4, a dialog appears, giving you a ton of options, one of which includes enclosing each line ending in newline character ...

Re: Do you miss the performance in Flare 3 in v4? here's how...

I noticed that when I move the text cursor with arrow keys and get near relatively large table, navigation with arrow keys slows down substantially.

I had a thought that the "caret tag neighborhood" indicators might be slowing stuff down, so I turned them off. (So happy I was able to find that ...

Re: Do you miss the performance in Flare 3 in v4? here's how...

In everyday use I haven't actually noticed Flare v4 to be any slower or faster v3, the only noticeable difference is in the build speed which is a lot faster - by about 65% for most of my projects.

Hmm. I haven't built my biggest project yet (because it takes so long :o) - I'll have to try that ...

I've just gotta say - I have a dual-threaded 3.2Gig P4. I bought this machine because I edit audio and video and wanted to make sure that the machine would serve me well for awhile, which it has. I realize there are faster machines out there now, but this is machine is no slouch. I can do an awful ...

I'd like to be able to select the text that I want to select. Select, copy or cut and paste quick as a wink.

I'm with ya. And I want to do it with my keyboard, not with a mouse. Using these *standard* keystrokes:

Shift-left/right arrow - select/deselect 1 character
Shift-up/down arrow - select ...

Re: Formatting of Programming Code Examples

I feel like the victim of a hoax...

When I generate WebHelp, I feel like it's worth the price of admission. It works great in Safari, a most notable achievement.

When I use the XML editor, or when I generate printed output, I kind of feel ripped off. RH's editor, while squirrely (squirly? squrly ...

Re: Formatting of Programming Code Examples

I've been fighting this and complaining about it since Version 1. I still find the XML editor barely useable a wicked squirrelly, (technical term) especially keyboard control of the text cursor. (Hey, we're all keyboardists here, no?)

The other part of this that is problematic is what happens when ...
