Re: Do you serve your WebHelp?

For what its worth, I installed Firefox 3 RC1 today, and I'm able to pull up webhelp off of my C drive and display it properly in Firefox without changing any configuration settings.

If you are experiencing this problem with earlier betas of Firefox 3, I recommend you upgrade to RC1 and see if you ...

Re: Set a list sequence default?

The proper way to do this is to do what Lisa suggested: use the "Make Paragraph Item" option when you right-click on the LI block in the XML editor:

I've discussed this before, but it's worth discussing again.

You're working in XML, and your ...

Re: Understanding hyperlinks vs. cross references

You've pretty much got the right idea on cross references and links.

I use both in my projects. I do online and printed output, and for the most part, I use cross references because I want the page number reference in my printed outputs. In my print section of my style sheet, I make sure my links ...

Re: How to import one Flare project into another

It does seem like a lot, but if you haven't done any custom table styles, and if you try to keep you style sheets the same across projects (like I do) then you don't have to necessarily do the style sheet step.

It sounds like a lot of work, but its not too bad. And the outcome is good! :)

Re: I've never been so frustrated with buggy software like this

Potential things you can try (one at a time to see if they solve your problem):

1. You can uninstall and reinstall the .NET 2.0 framework. (2.0 is what you need for Flare 3; the next version of Flare will probably require 3, but for now you just need 2).

2. You can uninstall Flare, then rip out ...

Re: How to import one Flare project into another

There is no source control as I'm the only one doing this.

I'm the only writer in my company, and I still use source control. Source control is more than multi-user access to your files. That is one benefit of source control, however, in my opinion, the greater benefit is tied to the name: source ...

Re: ERROR message: Skipping sub-entries

In addition to Kevin's comment, even if you have multiple modules that are optional, you can still use one project, and use conditions to create outputs, rather than using separate projects. You really only NEED one project; separating them out may be useful for some cases, but it is not really ever ...

Re: Is a simple TAB and Indent available?

I managed to look at a style sheet a few times and frankly was overwhelmed. It contains so much stuff I can't figure out what applies to what. I have not found Flare help to be exactly helpful in this area linking stuff together. From a simple point of view, a WYSIWYG editor should allow as close ...

Re: Is a simple TAB and Indent available?

A distinction I try to remember is that if it has to do with content it goes in the XML document. If it has to do with how the content is displayed, it goes in the style sheet. This is a best practice in help authoring: separating content from style. This is especially important if you are going to ...

Re: Conditional not working for me

You can usually tell in the XML editor if you have set the conditions properly if you can see the colors for both conditions in the checkerboard pattern. If you only see one color, but you have multiple conditions applied to the text, then the conditions weren't properly applied, as Lisa pointed out ...

Re: How to Remove or Edit "See" from Imported Word References

Are you authoring in Word or in Flare? If you're doing a one-time import and then you're authoring in Flare, I'd do a find-replace. Look at the code to see what code is importing, and then use Find/Replace to locate all of them in Flare and replace them.

Its a one-time pain, but such is life.

Another point to note...
the ever useful Flare help system has an article on DPI for Single-Sourcing images (topic of the same title)
or search for DPI, and you'll hit it.

You'll need Capture unfortunately.

Yeah, well, it sure doesn't work like I expect it to.

When you increase the DPI ...

Re: Conditional not working for me

If conditions aren't working, the first thing I'd check is in the target editor to ensure conditionalized content is excluded. You have to tag the content with conditions, and then you have to exclude certain conditions from a target.

You might think this happens automatically for the print/online ...

If it works with RH code, then you can probably hack the Flare XML to get it to work the same way. There were a couple of suggestions to look at the code itself to see what code actually works. Do that, then emulate it.

I'd say it isn't something obvious, so you should open a support request (assuming you have a maintenance agreement). You can see your support options at http://madcapsoftware.com/support.

Good luck!

I'm pretty sure that the dialog when you first launch Flare is to make you select the interface language, not the default language for topics. But you could confirm this by deleting all MadCap registry entries from your registry. You'd have to re-register Flare after you did this (which is why I'm ...

Yeah, Flare is not like the competitor (who shall remain nameless; we'll just call them "Stucco") who releases version 8 of the main software, waits two months for people to buy it, and then creates a NEW product suite which requires the full suite to get all the advanced functionality, and which ...
