Could you describe the problem and what you're trying to achieve in more detail? It's a little unclear what you want!

Re: Remote desktop and file renaming
@Francis321, this thread is from 2014! But very topical, isn't it?
In response to all of this, I'm pretty sure a Remote Desktop connection wouldn't have anything to do with how Flare operates, because it's just sharing visual information about what the remote PC is doing. Shouldn't be any ...

Re: "Error" Code in Messages?
It is a Git thing, but it won't have anything to do with the connection. I most frequently get errors like this when I'm moving large numbers of files (*sometimes* when I'm messing around with lists). Usually you can solve this problem by simply committing any pending changes. You may need to ...

Re: Build failed (Word target)
I don't recognise anything about that error message, but standard troubleshooting: create a new TOC, add topics one by one and see whether there's an obvious spot that causes the problem. Does this happen for all Word builds or just that TOC? Does it happen in other Flare projects with new TOCs? Are ...

Re: Page opening 2 times
The only way I can think of is that you can open both the normal view and the text view (right click on the topic and click Open with > Internal Text Editor). That probably doesn't help you much!

Linking External Files from PDF Output
I just spent a decent amount of time trial/erroring this, so I thought I'd post here to enlighten others who might want to do the same thing. I've been asked to create a PDF that contains links to a (large) number of other files (essentially combining our release notes with the excel spreadsheets ...

Re: Changing the indentation method of an existing TOC
You mean the indentation of the lines of text in the print table of contents itself? They're controlled by dedicated styles called p.TOC1, p.TOC2, etc. You can style the whole container with MadCap|tocProxy.

Re: Correct translation of field names
Ah, reading back I missed something important. We are planning on using translation memory, but for this we're also going to use a Term Base/Glossary. Similarly you can load these into translation software and it should flag terms which match those in the Term Base.

Re: Correct translation of field names
We've had localisation plans in development for a while and haven't really tried them out yet, so take this with a grain of salt. What I am planning to do is load the translated strings from the software itself (i.e. fields, menu items, etc) into a Translation Memory and use those to automatically ...

Re: How do I stop Flare from generating .prop files?
There's your culprit then! Flare needs to create a props file to put a conditional tag on an image (since that isn't something a normal PNG file or whatever can have defined). If you want conditions on your images, you'll have to accept the extra files.

Re: How do I stop Flare from generating .prop files?
One other thing that can product prop files is when you put a conditional tag on a folder (because folders can't hold information in and of themselves). Have you been tagging folders?

Re: OS agnostic Flare document collaboration?
Madcap Central now has a review feature which allows SMEs to review online, so maybe some people do that. It's pretty expensive compared to the base price of Flare though, so you may not be able to get buy in!

Re: "Exclude content..." not excluding...anything
Or of course you can always just remove the old Home Page from your project and just file it somewhere else! That would actually have an added bonus: if that Home Page is being secretly linked somewhere in your project, removing it should create an error in the build log which might help you track ...

Re: Page Layout not represented in PDF as expected
So the trick with Page Layouts is that you have to tell Flare where to apply each page type. In the TOC for your document, open the Properties for the first topic and go to the Printed Output tab. There you can define a Page Layout Break and set what Page Type you want this topic to use.

Re: Can you use variables to perform calculations?
That's... not really the intent of variables in Flare. I don't think it has any capacity to do calculations at all. So you could absolutely create variables for numbers and update them manually over time, but if you wanted to calculate anything with them you would have do it yourself.

Re: Show images as thumbnails, but NOT in XML Editor?
The main way I can think of to do that is just to set a different stylesheet (e.g. PDF) as your primary. But I guess some people don't actually have separate stylesheets for separate outputs! You should be able to switch mediums from the topic toolbar as needed anyway.

Re: Micro Content button grayed out
@ChocciMuffin: good advice, but one tip: if you are trying to string together two numbered lists, it's actually not a great idea to set the starting number manually. If the number of items in the first part of the list changes, the second half will start in the wrong place!

In the Text Editor, the relevant toolbar is at the top (of the topic itself, not the ribbon for the entire project). There are some 'A' buttons that make the text bigger, smaller and return to 100%.

Re: Spellchecker not working
I can't really help you with Flare's internal spellchecker, but in the meantime: instead of pasting sections into Word individually, the easiest thing to do is to create a throwaway MS Word target. Then you can just publish the whole document and run a full review of spelling and grammar at once ...

@katireen That is interesting, because it isn't my experience at all. I'm converting a large (inherited) AuthorIt library. For me the lists generally come in alright, with one exception: any change in the li style is included as an entirely separate ul/ol element. So whenever the li class changes (e ...

@sds, what you're seeing is the normal effect of tracking changes. Tracked changes are preliminary - they must be accepted before they will actually be implemented. So if you do not accept the changes, none of them (including deleted paragraphs, etc) will appear in the output.

Re: Exporting a project using multiple targets
I had to do exactly this the other day! You have to reverse your thinking and instead use the import process.
