There *IS* a way to do it in Flare:
Single click after the last character of the word, then press and hold Ctrl+Shift+Left arrow. One arrow key left keypress selects the whole word.
Just found this now, and it's bugged me for what feels like centuries! Now I need muscle memory to kick in.

I sent MadCap Support two copies of our CSS file: One before opening it in the Flare UI, and one after it's saved in Flare. The comments' placement was noticeably changed, sometimes horribly. And inconsistently! I explained that Flare should not touch any comments. People place them where they do ...
