Re: Internal error: object reference not set...

There were a number of bugs in 3.03 (such as not getting the correct formatting in CHM output, not getting glossaries / search to work, etc.) that were fixed in 3.1. So you probably should give whoever makes the decision of what version to use a gentle nudge to get a move on 8) Staying on 3.03 is ...

Re: Create a Notes column in the printout?

Very good point. But if it works in Blaze, you have a couple of options:

1) Develop your source in Flare, then when you need print / PDF output open a COPY of the project in Blaze and make the output. (That way, if things do blow up, it's just the copy that gets FUBARed and your original is ...

Re: Internal error: object reference not set...

Not sure if this would help, but the first thing I would do is update to 3.1. Since you have 3.x already, it's a no charge upgrade.

Re: Chaps i think there's a need for a Really Good Flare book

That's the problem. It seems that Flare was created by a bunch of software developers who all have ponytails, straggly beards, and broken spectacles held together with insulating tape. What it seems to lack is input from people who actually create documentation. I had been warned that Flare was ...

Re: How do CSS properties map to Frame?

I'm not sure if there is a definitive answer--since you can define your own styles in Frame, it's pretty much impossible to say "Frame Style Such and Such always maps to CSS style So and So."

Re: What do you think about the Ribbon?

Returning to the OP's question, I'm not all that particular about whether things are in ribbons or static toolbars or some other metaphor. As long as the tools are quick / easy to access and intuitive to find, I'm happy. Help me do my job with a minimum of fuss is all I ask for.

Re: What do you think about the Ribbon?

M$ came up with the ribbon because they found out that most users didn't know how to find tools in Word 2003 and earlier--only experts could remember which menu they were in. So they moved everything into the ribbon: now, non-experts still don't know where to find things while experts are cursing at ...

Re: Create a Notes column in the printout?

Do you have access to the Blaze beta? I haven't had time to play with it, but I think this is exactly the sort of thing that Blaze and Flare 4 should be able to do. Could be worth looking, at least.

Re: How to break .html files

When you import the Frame source files, there are various options for where to break the content into topics. You can find these options in the "New Topic Styles" and "Options" pages of the Import definition. New Topic Styles, as the name suggests, allows you to define which styles are used to break ...

Re: 5 Powerful Timesaving Flare Tips You Don't Know About

5 makes perfect sense for lone writers who have control over the style guide. If you're on a team of writers or if the style guide is a matter of corporate policy, though, deleting styles unilaterally can get you in hot water.

Re: Flare 3.1 fails to install in Parallels

Not running a Mac here, but what I would be inclined to do based on your description is remove Vista from the bootcamp partition and install XP there, then point a Parallels VM at that XP install. It should work the same as the Vista one did, with the bonus of not having to deal with Vista :)

Re: Indexing - Subkeywords not displaying in Index Explorer

I have seen that before, although I haven't seen it in a while (that could be because I haven't done much indexing lately, though).

Are you accessing the content over a network, or is it locally on your system? If it's on a network, try copying the project locally and see if it makes a difference ...

Re: Can I generate Word files with images included in the file?

What I've been doing here is the Ctrl+A process and the enabling Save in Document without worrying about the Break Links option. It's been working for me here. It's possible that the Break Links is affecting the output in some way (logically it shouldn't, but hey, this is Word we're talking about ...

Re: Can I generate Word files with images included in the file?

I'm using Word 2003 and I have ~170 linked graphics in my 128 page Word document. (This is a fraction of what my final document will have.) I used Edit:Links to save the pictures in my document and break the links. It seemed to work like a charm until I realized that only a few of the graphics ...

I don't have a solution (running PC here) but this was discussed earlier in the week in the thread below. I don't think a solution was found yet, though.

Re: CSS "page-break-before: avoid" property for images?

Here's an idea: you mentioned that you usually have an introductory line before the image. Why don't you try putting the page-break-after: avoid; attribute on that paragraph? That would (in theory) cause that paragraph to follow the image onto the following page.

Re: User Editable Help

User's can't edit the help in the help environment. Depending on which output format you use and how it is installed, they may be able to edit the files (for example, if you build WebHelp the output is in HTML, so any HTML or text editor could be used as long as the users have the help system on ...

Don't think so (although it would certainly be handy for me if it were :D ) My guess is something in the RH import got Flare thinking it should use a different language setting.

Re: Spell Checking in Flare

In the topic properties, you can set the language for each topic. You can change it by selecting the topic in the Content Explorer and hitting F4, then going to the language page in the properties. Unfortunately, you'll have to change it for each topic--it isn't a global setting.

You can tell ...

Re: Spaces disappearing between variables and snippets

I have seen this before (it also happens if you have two variables back to back). Basically, it seems that if you have two pieces of code side by side Flare ignores the space between them. I can confirm that Lisa's suggestion about inserting a non-breaking space does work in these cases.
