Re: How to override Local Formatting

Is there any way of overriding or cancelling the local formatting, if possible in one go?

Not with a stylesheet. The problem you're running into is cascading style precedence: in CSS, the closer style code is to the content, the higher priority it is. This means that style code that is inserted ...

Exactly. Just giving them a nametag doesn't tell the Bouncer what to do - they also need to be on the "kick'em out" list.

Exactly. It updates during the build process.

Use a cross-reference instead of a standard hyperlink. Cross references update when you change the text in the target.

Re: editing for automatic builds

When they do an automatic build, where are they getting the help files from? If it's some sort of source control, you can deal with this by having the writers only check documentation updates into source control after they have been approved by the SME (this would be similar to a developer only ...

Re: KB SEARCH OPTIMIZATION

As Dave suggests, Synonyms would be a great idea, because the word you use may not be the one your users think of first. For example, suppose you use the word "image" throughout your documents, but your user instead is searching for "picture". If you don't include "picture" as a synonym for "image ...

Re: Images show up in PDF output but not in WebHelp

If that's not it, another thing to check would be the image format. WebHelp will only work with web-based graphics formats (PNG, JPG, GIF, etc.). OTOH, you can make a PDF with image formats that would never work in a browser (TIFF for example).

Re: Microsoft Help 3.x

My only fear is that something Microsoft special will be in there and that the proprietary viewer will need the blatantly broken IE to work. Anything that isn't browser and OS independent doesn't strike me as a viable help platform going forward.

If it does become available, it'd be remarkably ...

Also remember that this is the 3rd help format that MS has developed since CHM. They developed Help 2.0 as RamonS mentioned, plus the also developed the User Assistance Platform for Windows Vista. AFAIK both were originally intended to be released to the documentation community, but in both cases MS ...

Re: Creating a mini-toc for online help

I may be misremembering, but I think this was one of those features that doesn't work correctly if there are spaces anywhere in the path to the topic files (I know that breadcrumbs don't work if there are spaces - I think this one doesn't either). This means that your file names AND the names of all ...

Currently Flare doesn't do that in one step. It does sound like a good feature though.

Re: Deleting Word file from Word import also deletes images

It's been a really long time since I imported anything from Word, but iirc there is an option in the import definition to maintain a link to the original document. If you turn that option off, the the content should become "normal" Flare content.

Or you could delete the import definition altogether ...

Re: Styles not updated after build

You said you dropped the table stylesheet, but did you go into each of the tables and set their properties to not point to a table stylesheet? I'm not sure that deleting a table stylesheet will automatically reset a table to using the default styles, so it may still be looking for the td classes ...

Sorry, still not clear: you say it doesn't work on your system, but I'm not clear on whether you have patched your system or not.

If you haven't, it sounds like the solution is to patch everyone's installations, since the one system you confirmed has the file working has been patched.

One of our developers, however, prefers the idea of using SharePoint as the way to deploy KB articles, but then they still need to be maintained as Word/PDF docs.

Speaking as the guy who got stuck administering our SharePoint system here, I would ask if that adventurous developer was also ...

Re: Style Guides for beginner

You should also be able to find the Microsoft Manual of Style online if you do a search. It used to be available for free as a chm - afaik that hasn't changed. That's a decent place to start, especially if you're writing for products that work on Windows.

I believe Sun Microsystems had one ...

Re: How to start project when source Word docs keep changing

I haven't worked with it much, but you can re-import the file. I'm pretty sure that you would have to make sure that the names are the same, which may mean that you have to do some file management to make sure that the file you import gets recognized by Flare. The downside is, if you've done any ...

Finally, I tried Kevin's suggestion and put an entry in my normal CSS for MCPopupSpot with a 12pt font. Again no result but I may have not done the entry correctly. Should I have put "a.MCPopupSpot" or just ".MCPopupSpot"?

Another option would be to add a generic class (.MCPopupSpot) to your main stylesheet and set the font size there. That should over-ride the settings it's getting elsewhere.
