You might be able to use the "display" property of your cross-reference class to hide it in screen output - set the property to "none" for your default medium and to (I think) "inherit" or "block" for your print medium.

I think the people that designed our diagrams used Illustrator, and they could save them as Flash SWF files.

If the tool you're using can't save them in this format, a google for "convert svg swf" gives a few possible leads.

I don't know much about SVG, but I'm pretty sure IE (6) needs a SVG viewer to display them (I think Firefox has one built-in).

I had a few diagrams that I wanted to be scaleable, and I inserted them as Flash (swf) files - works fine in Flare and help outputs.

Aha, I think I was expecting 'Snippet Suggestions' to include the job that 'Frequent Phrases' does.

For my first point, I'm assuming that not being able to find/replace 'text' snippets is a bug.

I understand what you're getting at, but I don't think you've got my point. I'm suggesting that you develop and test your help so that it works for as many of your users as possible (with the minimum of fuss).

I would definitely test your help in as many browsers as you can, and ensure that it works ok.

You need to design your help so that it looks ok for everyone (or as many as possible). If it doesn't work for some people then really that's your own fault for poor design.

I don't know of a list, but you'll find that there are differences in what you'll see in the XML editor, the preview, the internal browser preview, and the final output.

Basically, none of the heading options seem to work if you have anything in your template file in between the <body> tag and <h1> tag - i.e. the you can't have any content above the heading.

If the raw content must be produced using Word, then it limits things a bit more.

Back to your initial question, I'm not aware that Flare can convert particular styles in a Word document to drop-downs, as your existing system can.

rather than produce word documents that are converted to help, you could write the content in Flare and output it to both help and Word (for PDF) formats.

Flare modifies XML files with a .xml extension, but it will leave files alone if they have a different file extension.
I tested this by changing the extension of a XML file and it was included in the target unmodified.

I'm using WebHelp, and I chose not to use DotNetHelp precisely because of the branding - it's far too imposing and isn't professional looking. It's what I'd expect to see if I'd used a cheap bit of shareware, not a professional tool.

I would still tend to include that in the stylesheet, e.g. have a span class defining the colour.

I've done this because if I need to change the colour later, it's just a change to one reference in the stylesheet, and not changing 1000s of bits of inline formatting in the topics.
