I think it comes down to personal preference and as mentioned before the audience. Apple is courting the hip and rich young uns, so maybe the buddy tone hits the mark for them.
It's not purely personal preference; there is a valid reason to choose one over the other: tone. If you are writing ...

Re: Creating Condition Tags for Versions
The handling of the conditional text/topics/folders when you delete a condition could be more comfortable - e.g. just like it is in FrameMaker (FM). If I delete a condition, FM asks me what to do with the conditional text: I could delete the text or leave it and just get rid of the condition ...

Re: Creating Condition Tags for Versions
We used to use feature numbers (our features were typically a 5-digit number, such as 54985). However, when we moved to agile development, and features were stories (or groups of stories), we changed to naming the conditions something like: DoNotSendFailedCreditCardsToAROption It's longer and harder ...

Re: Doctype element in Flare source files
I think RamonS's point is that the source files aren't the final compiled version anyway. They're not meant to be validated against a doctype declaration because they're not meant to stand alone as they are. It's only after you build the help and bring everything together (e.g., masterpages) that ...

Re: Compiler (Internal Error): The node to be inserted is from a
I could speculate as to what that means, but I have no idea how to go about troubleshooting it (aside from the generic method of removing topics one by one until it works, which would tell you which topic(s) has the problem).

Re: Best way to reuse text for new project
Conditions are probably the best way to go, provided you have to maintain both. If the original project will no longer be developed, however, I'd suggest copying the old project to a new project, or backing up the project (so you always have a copy of the old one for possible other uses, such as ...

Re: Why does text have brackets and arrows?
I'm copying some text to be re-used. Even before I have and pasted, the text I want is bookended with square brackets and tiny arrows.
A sample is attached. I have never seen this before. Why does it look like this and is it a bad thing?

Have you considered a Find / Replace in code? That would enable you to find and replace styles in the code all at once (assuming you are doing something like replacing all of Style A with Style B).

In addition to our existing product, we are creating a sister software that needs to share the same help system. In Flare, I know that you can apply conditional tags to the project to create two versions from the same project.

Re: copy project components doesn't seem to work
Conditions are inside the files. If you have the files, but you don't have condition changes you made, there are only a few possibilities I can think of:
1) For whatever reason, the target / file in which you changed conditions was not saved. I've never had this happen to me, but I suppose it's a ...

Re: Using old Captures files in version 5?
We have some old screen shots created using Capture 3. These files have .png and .png.props versions. From what I know, the Capture-specific stuff is stored in the .props file. We have now updated to Capture 5 and are attempting to edit the old version 3 files. However Capture 5 will not open the ...

Re: variables in index
The solution is simple, but somewhat work-intensive. Basically, you create both keywords in your topic, and then condition each. Then exclude the keywords that don't apply in each of your targets.
Unfortunately, there's no way to use variables in index keywords, so you're stuck with conditions.

You could also try to access any other file on that webserver (if you have to, upload a "dummy" html file). If you get the same problem, the issue is not your WebHelp, but rather your connection to your server.

Re: Unwanted variable sets in the Variables dialog
The only problem with renaming variables is that Flare does not go through and change all the variables you may have already used in your project. So if you've already used variables, if you change the name of the variable group, all the variables you've already used from that group will break. You ...

Can you reproduce this problem on another system?
Have you tried to disable your virus scanner?
Also, if you have support with MadCap, I'd contact them about this.
(I've converted old RoboHelp X5 projects to Flare, and haven't had this problem. Can't speak of any other RH versions.)

Re: Do multiple instances of Flare co-exist peacefully?
I don't think I've ever had a problem with running multiple instances of Flare on my PC, ranging back to Flare v2. I wasn't aware it was ever not recommended. When I was deep in help development for our releases, I'd routinely have 3 projects open at the same time, and never ran into any problems I ...
