Re: Bookmarks and Index markers
Several things could be happening -- stylesheet issues, target not set as Primary, using a Web layout for a Print document (or vice versa), using the wrong medium. I say check them all.

If Printed Output>Continue from previous isn't working on the Properties dialog you may have some issue with a file.

Re: output flare topics to an excel spreadsheet using Flare 7.2
I would think it more logical to output to Word and bring the Word content into Excel. Because Excel isn't a target, you will need an intermediary format anyway. Might as well use software the plays well with Excel.

Vilma,
You may need to analyze your tables. It may be that you need more table styles for situations when you have images, etc.

Give them also some examples in the Word template (so they can delete or type over them). Make sure you give them one style for text ("Normal" works fine), and get rid of everything they don't use. Lock down or hide everything that allows your customers to get dangerous.

Re: Setting table width and column width with Table Stylesheet
We set a max-width property for our tables. This is in our general stylesheet. With the new modal tablestyles we still do that, because it's the only way we can get a consistency on table size.

We build separate stylesheets for online and other uses, but use the same style names. Things we don't want to display in online help have display: none in the stylesheet. Have you tried that?

Re: nonbreaking space for crossrefs?
Interesting idea Enrico, but that "nowrap" is a disaster for crossrefs.
I really do need to be able to add a nonbreaking space in the xref components of the stylesheet ... <sigh>

Re: nonbreaking space for crossrefs?
Thank you for the idea! What occurred was very interesting.
A crossref at the end of a line -- say, "See Slaying a Jabberwocky on page 30" would run all the text off the right side of page, but the page number appeared on the next line.
LOL
I will keep experimenting.

nonbreaking space for crossrefs?
Is there a way to add a nonbreaking space for crossrefs? I want to ensure the page number stays with the word "page" (a common typographic practice).
Many thanks!

If you have Acrobat (not just Reader) you can change from RGB to CMYK. Look at Preferences for more information.

Re: Missing & incorrect bookmarks in PDF output
Look at the styles that you expect to be generating bookmarks. Look for the setting Heading Level. Do you have heading levels set for those styles? (Heading Level=1 for first-level bookmarks, etc.). And does your TOC follow that scheme as well?

Have you tried using a font like Dingbats instead of a graphic? Or setting the graphic in Capture so that you don't get fuzziness?

Did anyone look at the default setup for the printer output to PDF? If you don't embed your fonts you are likely to get substitutions.

Re: Pair Kerning for better typography in PDF?
You are correct Lisa, the white-space setting is for the space between words. Word spacing is a common kerning control as well. However, I haven't found it to provide significant enough control over the rivers in text.

Re: Pair Kerning for better typography in PDF?
There aren't fine typography controls as yet. But I find that changing letter-spacing to 0px or 0pt helps the text to look better.
You might also experiment with the white-space setting.
Doesn't seem to be any easy way to remove the rivers, though.

Re: Table Styles
Do you have a table class (table.class) or styles applied to the table element in your CSS? That's the osglobal (and easiest) way to deal with lots of tables.
But if you have a bunch of local styles (that is, there are styles and overrides to content in tables) you'd have to strip those out ...

Re: Table of Contents Presentation
Because TOCs are kinda awkward in Flare -- the numbers are in one column of a table, the content in another -- you may not be able to have the page numbers follow the content by a specified amount (say, 4 ems).

We use complex selectors and it is possible to change fonts, sizes, etc.; but you have to fiddle with it. Sometimes what you think sets the dependency isn't it at all.

Re: Preserving the PRE style
We actually use styles for our PRE-type text. We use a span class and a paragraph class.
That way we can control the text no matter where it occurs.
