What's the shortcut key to start a recording?

Just downloaded a Mimic v6 trial. Big red record button is below the bottom margin of my screen, so am forced to drag the crop upward just to see the button. According to the Help, End is the shortcut key to start a recording. But End does nothing.

Re: Is anyone reading the help?

Remember Gus the fireman in "Leave it to Beaver"? His existence was justified by the blue-moon fire and visits from the Beav. That's kind of how I view the justification of help's existence: It's gotta be there, but if you're writing it, leave your pride at the door.

Re: Is anyone reading the help?

Thanks for the response. The help isn't on a public website--yet; it's shipped with our software to customers, so internal to customers. Your suggestions make great sense, and through the years, in one way or another, they've been tried. But in the end, it seems to me, no one really cares to read ...

Is anyone reading the help?

For the sake of argument, if our help content generally provides the help our customers need, how do we get them to start using it more, for crying out loud?

Re: Hiding/Showing help content depending on customer

Thanks very much. I'm probably a bit out of my element in this discussion, but development never has been interested in anything I build on my end. I've only needed to make sure the individual help topics are linked in the Alias file to the appropriate screen IDs and that all files are checked into ...

Hiding/Showing help content depending on customer

We create a WebHelp file that gets shipped with our software. Through the use of screen link IDs and the Alias file, we map help content to the corresponding screens, which in turn display help icons our customers click to view help.

Issue: Various features within our base software require ...

Re: Help won't open for customer

You're absolutely right. Exciting. Thanks for that; however, I can do it here at the office: open the help, copy shortcut a TOC item, close the help, paste the shortcut in the browser and the help opens like a champ, but if the customer is unable to open the help, how would he get the URL? I'm ...

Re: Help won't open for customer

Thank you for helping me to continue the dialog with our field rep, but you'll have to forgive me for being so poor with the language, because here comes the real laugher (at least you can't see my face): Where would I find the URL that points to the Webhelp? I see a software page with a URL, but ...

Help won't open for customer

For years, we've been using Flare to create Webhelp for our software. A question mark (?) icon appears at the top of each software page that contains help content. One of our newer customers reports that, when clicking the ? icon, nothing happens--no error message, no pop-up window. It's a first for ...

Re: Header and text color change in compiled topic view

Here it is. I'm guessing it has to do with the "style="color: #0000ff" part but haven't been able to find where to fix it in the stylesheet. Can't figure out or don't remember how it got there. Sorry, and thanks:

Re: Header and text color change in compiled topic view

Thanks for the responses. To apply the master page, I right ...

Header and text color change in compiled topic view

I've done something and can't figure out what. When I create a new topic, the header and default text appear as normal (black) in the XML Editor; however, in the compiled topic, they're blue. When I apply a style class (feedback link) using the HTML bar, they return to their normal (black) colors in ...

Re: Toggler Problem

You're preaching to the choir. It's reasonable to assume a connection with the conditional text problem. Anyway, MadCap followed up with an e-mail saying a bug had been submitted on my behalf. In the meantime, rather than fuss with the dpi, I'll muscle through with my original workaround.

Re: Toggler Problem

In case anyone else bumps into the same problem, I've just exchanged e-mails with MadCap support and learned that, with Windows 7, the system dpi needs to be set at 96 (normal). Here's what to do:

1. Right-click on the desktop.
2. Under Advanced Settings, click the "Make text and other items larger ...

Re: Toggler Problem

Another question with regard to the toggler feature: If I have only one named element in the toggler targets grid of the Insert Toggler dialog, I'm unable to select it. To select it, I have to create a "dummy" named element first, then the one I want to select. Since I haven't seen anyone else bring ...

Re: Flare v. Robo Features

Thanks for the response. I'm a bit out of my element here, but the issues evidently are important. We've got multiple code streams going simultaneously, merging here, merging there, with variations of the help included with each. Best I can say is, I'm happy with the way things are set up on my end ...

Re: Flare v. Robo Features

Here's an excerpt from a recent dialog the developer had with a Flare rep:

"I walked through the setup process for RoboHelp 9 in order to see the TFS integration first hand. It is definitely leveraging the TFS MSSCCI Provider for TFS. This is nice since all dialogs are the same that one would see ...

Re: Flare v. Robo Features

You'll have to forgive me, but at the moment, I've got only an indistinct smell for the reasons. If I recall, one developer explained it as Robo having knitted a cap specifically to fit the TFS integration (somewhere along in the process, the UI mimics/behaves the same as the TFS UI?), while Flare ...

Re: Flare v. Robo Features

Not in the least surprised by your last point. Thanks so much for the list. At our company, one division of writers is using Robohelp, the other Flare (long story), and pressure is being applied to adopt one tool companywide. One issue has been ease of integration with TFS, and that, according to ...

No answers except to say, for what it's worth, I certainly empathize with your troubles, particularly as regards the Flash and Silverlight outputs. I like Flare, and since version 2 (the license we purchased), I've been pulling for Mimic to work out its general bugginess so that I can sell our ...

Thanks for the response, lacastle. Your first suggestion is the way we've been doing it; however, I could've sworn I stumbled upon a quicker way a while back, but now I'm thinking I must've dreamed it.

Re: TFS - 503: Service Unavailable

Sorry, you're absolutely right: I get the message when I open the project. Yes, I can browse the project in TFS.
