Re: Should Madcap merge Cross References and Hyperlinks?

You could do something with a user selecting in the XREF setup, but that might get cumbersome. I'd have to see how it worked to make a judgement.
Right, I can envision a control (well, two controls) wherein you select either an xref format, or a static user-defined text string. I agree that it ...

Windows 7 support plans?

Sorry if this question has been asked before: I tried to search and got:
The following words in your search query were ignored because they are too common words: windows 7.

What's the timeframe for Flare on Windows 7? We're trying to make our plans for shifting our development environment ...

Re: Should Madcap merge Cross References and Hyperlinks?

Hm, I always found it conceptually simple, but I don't use the two constructs the way everyone else here does (since you don't all use them the same way  ).

Cross-references get updated automatically to reflect the item they're linked to. For example, if I link to another topic and I want ...

Re: Popup Link to External Topic Not Working

Hm. Wonder if there's a way to embed the reference to the external file into the popup link?
The "normal" link for this purpose includes the name of the external file .... "filename.chm::topic.htm". That doesn't seem to be enough in the case of the popup ... it's like it doesn't know how to find ...

Re: Popup Link to External Topic Not Working

I just spent a good chunk of time investigating this same bug on Flare 5.

It's a really cool bug. The links actually work if you have previously hit a non-popup link to the same external .chm file (from the same .chm file). The picture I get is that there's a reference to the external .chm ...

Re: Internal error building breadcrumbs

Here's a big THANKS to Ryan at MadCap support, who tracked this down for me today. My project builds with breadcrumbs now!

First I isolated the problem to a single topic in my project, but I couldn't figure out what was wrong with the topic. The topic is conditional and is only included in one of ...

Re: Internal error building breadcrumbs

After a whole lot of brute-force debugging (successively deleting topics, TOC entries, etc.), I've narrowed the problem down to one particular TOC entry. If I delete this TOC entry, the build works. If I delete it and recreate it, the build fails. If I move it around, the build fails.

The TOC entry ...

Internal error building breadcrumbs

I've just added a breadcrumbs proxy to a master page that's used by three of my targets, and whereas it works fine for two of the targets, the third target gets "Internal error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object" every time I try to build it.

If I comment out the breadcrumbs ...

Re: Bound project to TFS and now it hangs

Wow, I'm sorry to hear that. Introducing another source control system into our processes isn't a reasonable option for us, so I'll continue to check files in and out of TFS manually.

Bound project to TFS and now it hangs

I have a Flare project that has always been checked into source control (TFS), but not bound. This week I decided to bind it, since we have a new writer and it would be easier to work with the tools using the binding. I bound the project yesterday morning; it worked fine as I was editing all day ...

Re: Compiler (Internal Error) and tip

No, we had all our patch levels frozen well before this started happening. And we suspected the antivirus software, tried turning it off and still saw the failure.

Re: Compiler (Internal Error) and tip

We are using .NET Framework 3.5 SP1.

I haven't tried upgrading to Flare v4 yet. That wasn't a good option till yesterday, when we shipped -- this problem turned up so late in our release cycle that we didn't want to change the configuration of the build machine except as a last resort. (We would ...

Re: Compiler (Internal Error) and tip

For any Flare folks (or others) who are tuned in --I had a PM asking me what I'd heard from MadCap support. The short answer is not much; they got my project and have tried to reproduce the problem without success.

Here's what is at stake on this one: We never saw this happen before the last few ...

Re: Compiler (Internal Error) and tip

Thanks Kelly! That doesn't help us with our nightly build but does help when we're roadblocked by this problem during development.

We saw the failure again last night: so, we went a week without seeing it at all, then saw it two nights in a row. Our build guru typically sees these failures ...

Re: Compiler (Internal Error) and tip

Just saw the failure again in last night's build: it doesn't seem to be correlated to anything in particular. We've not been making very many changes to the help this week, certainly nothing structural. :?: :?:

Re: Compiler (Internal Error) and tip

We're still seeing this rather infrequently, but like all intermittents, it happens when it's least convenient and most embarrassing. Last night we were going to FINALLY build a release candidate after a lot of pain with a defect unrelated to the help, and right at the end of the build, the Madbuild ...

Re: Compiler (Internal Error) and tip

We've removed all our WebHelp targets from our build (now we build them manually, so that's a step backward), removed all our .gif files in favor of .jpgs, and the problem went away .... for a week. Now it's back, failing on the build of an HTMLHelp target. I've opened a support incident on it.

Re: Compiler (Internal Error) and tip

Here's some info from our build expert:
My last experiment was to delete all .gif files in the TEMP folder before each madbuild.exe, and so I know that it was not laying around from a previous build.. The other evidence is that many times it is the first madbuild.exe that actually creates temp .gif ...

Re: Compiler (Internal Error) and tip

It wouldn't have been from a previous build of that target, because we've taken to cleaning the directory in between builds. I'll see if we can get a fix on whether it's from the failed build, or a build of a previous target in the script.

Re: Compiler (Internal Error) and tip

I'm reactivating this thread because we just started seeing this problem and it's killing our nightly build more often than not.

Object model for Flare?

Does Flare expose an object model (and if so, where is it documented)? I would like to be able to import a non-Flare project and save the resulting Flare project from a PowerShell script. It doesn't appear that I can do it from the command line.

Renaming .chm file causes "lost" resource files

Two teams here are seeing the same problem. We build .chm files with Flare and they are fine, then if we rename the .chm file the stylesheet and any included images can no longer be found.

This doesn't happen with every .chm file we build.

We've observed it with both command-line builds and ...
