Re: Should Madcap merge Cross References and Hyperlinks?

I, too, found the differences between these two concepts confusing. There's plenty of overlap.

In the end, I scrapped CRs, and I only use hyperlinks.

We will always need hyperlinks... because we'll have plenty of things OUTSIDE of our project (and indeed, outside our company) that we need to link ...

Linking to the TOC, Index, Search from a topic?

Is there anyway to create a hyperlink in a topic that will cause my Web Help window to jump to the Index, the Search, or the TOC, etc?

My welcome page for my Web Help includes a legend, explaining what each of the icon buttons do. I want to make those items click-able, just like the icon buttons ...

Search takes a looong time to load, what's the secret?

When I click "Search" in my compiled Web Help, there is a long lag as it loads.

Any advice on speeding this up?

Is it loading the whole search database that takes so long,
and is there someway I can trim that?

I've noticed that there are some interesting options in the Target file, but I don't ...

Re: Modifications to TocEntry

Hi,
Yeah, what Margaret said.

It's really TWO basic steps:

1. You open your SKIN, and use the styles section to create a new class or modify your existing class. You can change the icon in TOCs and use an icon that you've edited to make more padding. Or you can change the font for the TOC items to ...

TOC Syncing is great... except when it isn't...

Hi,
I love the TOC Syncing option, which means that when I click a link in an article, the Table of Contents will automatically shift to show the topic I'm viewing. That's great because it allows users to see related topics, etc.

HOWEVER, when I use WebHelp's Index or Search, and browse several ...

Re: Modifications to TocEntry

That workaround is exactly what I did, by the way.

For those finding this thread and unsure what it means, I did this:

1. In my skin, in the Styles section, under the TocEntry tab, I clicked "Add Class"

2. Then I used custom fonts or icons for my new Toc Class.

3. Then, in my TOC file, I right ...

Re: Increase the font size of the Search box entry field?

This one was a breeze!

For anyone hunting for this later, I compiled and then edited Output\PROJECTNAME\Skin\Search.htm.

Here's the part I edited:

Thanks!

Your post sounds like what I need, Lisa, and I'll tackle this tomorrow.

At almost the same time, I also got a nice note back from MadCap!:

Re: Changing color of selected and/or visited Search Results

I submitted this as a bug/request.

Unfortunately, they just AGREED and sent it to dev.

So I still don't know how to turn the feature off.

There must be a way to hack the skin or the style output, at least, and disable that gray highlighting that occurs when you hover over search results.

If ...

Re: Increase the font size of the Search box entry field?

Hi guys,
I think you're all talking about the Quicksearch box in the toolbar.

I need to change the font of the Search box, not the Quicksearch box. I mean the one in the Search panel? It appears when you click on the Search accordian button in Web Help and you use it to search the entire project ...

Re: hiding topics in search

Ah!
I guess I can't imagine having a topic that should actually BE in two different outputs, but only be searchable in ONE of them.

Generally, the problem I run into is that I completely exclude a topic from the TOC, but it ends up in the Search database anyway (the search database includes all ...

Increase the font size of the Search box entry field?

I'm sure this is in the Styles of the Skin editor, SOMEWHERE, but I can't find it.

How do I increase the font of the search box... where people type search strings, in the Search accordian item of WebHelp?

Right now it is so small I can barely see what I'm typing when I search.

Re: hiding topics in search

Actually... I think if you come up with a system of condition tags. (See "Conditions"), you could assign different topics different conditions, completely exclude those conditions in your Target file, and then they wouldn't be built in as part of the Search database.

I have three main product trees ...

Re: Changing color of selected and/or visited Search Results

Aha!

Yep. The gray-selection stuff works fine in Internet Explorer.

It does not work properly in any other browser I've tried.

I'll send this to MadCap.

If anyone knows the css/skin style that controls that gray background of selected-search result items, I would love to turn it off for now ...

I've tried a few different computers and see the same result. It was actually one of my beta testers that noticed the behavior... but I believe she also uses Firefox.

We have an office-wide ban on Internet Explorer, and encourage the same ban for our clients and customers. I'll try and find a PC ...

Dave,
Yes,
I'm getting "click and it stays gray" behavior for all skins for Firefox and Safari on both Windows and Macintosh.

I just thought this was how Web Help worked!

If I click on various results, it ends up looking like this:

Adding Labels to the Toolbar Buttons in WebHelp

I would really like a small text label underneath my toolbar buttons.

In the Styles section of the skin editor for Web Help, you can put a label on your toolbar items.

That label seems to just hover in the middle of the image. I can't figure out what determines it's placement, alignment, etc.

Anyway to turn off the Icon Tray (Icon Tray?) and all Accord

Hi,
I would like to hide all accordion buttons and remove the icon tray, and simply access the TOC, Index, and Search using Buttons in the Toolbar.

How do I do that?

*I can set how many accordion ...

Thank you!

I had a bit of a struggle fixing indentation, and it appears that some of the stuff flips and flops after you have clicked on it,

I now have a much greater understanding (and control) over my miniTOC formatting.

Changing color of selected and/or visited Search Results

In the search results in Web Help, if you click on a result, the result item's background turns gray and the topic is displayed on the right.

If you then click on a DIFFERENT result, that topic also turns gray, and the first topic stays gray.

End result: you can have three or four topics colored ...

Re: Change title above TOC, but keep on the Accordian button?

Yes, the problem with the browser window is that it is locally dependent. Font, size, impact, etc. all gets set by the browser and the operating system.

We have users on various Linux distributions, using OSX, using Windows XP, Vista, etc. I want to make a nice, consistent title where I set a font ...

Bob,
Thank you for pointing directly to the label control for me, I do often have trouble finding it.

Yes. I would be fine with breaking that link, and having the title above the TOC always just show the title of my help system.

I'm kind of wondering what other folks do, though, when they want to ...
