Re: Finding out Flare version used to build a project

Thank you so much Dave! We are building HTML Help, I decompiled the CHM, which showed a SkinSupport folder. Each of the .js files whows 4.0.0.0 at the top, so that is a good idea of what version was used to build the file.

Thanks again

Finding out Flare version used to build a project

Is there any way to find out what exact version and build of Flare was used for a specific project? I'm having problems with the latest version (funny French characters from Frame) and I'd like to revert to a previous version that I know was successful. I have the content and project folders ...

Re: Paragraph style with image (for tips, warnings)

You would have more control over the image if it was inserted separately, and not part of the note/tip/warning styles.
You could create a class under "img" in your stylesheet. Call it something like "note". Relevant properties might be:
img.note
{
position: relative;
bottom: 20px;
right: 30px ...

Re: Cross-reference to auto-number paragraph label?

You'll need to add a bookmark to the figure caption (Insert>Bookmark)
When you insert the crossreference elsewhere in the topic, select that bookmark
Beside "XRef Class" click the "New..." button.
Give the new xref class a name "FigureCaption" or similar
Under Available Commands, select Paranum (or ...

Re: Seeing & applying span styles

You may want to use <b> or <i> etc so you can more easily apply certain formatting to a bunch of classes at once. For example, if you have 3 types of bold (black, blue and red for example), later you might want to increase the font size of all of them by modifying the parent <b>

<span> is usually ...

Re: Seeing & applying span styles

Hi Liz

The styles list (one way of accessing styles is Ctrl+Shift+H) displays different styles depending on context (i.e. what you have selected or where the cursor is in the XML editor). If nothing is selected, it will only display paragraph styles. Span styles should appear when you highlight one ...

Re: Using conditions to produce different versions of help

If using conditions, I would recommend (in order of priority):
1) use generic language, no conditions
2) condition at the topic level
3) conditon at the paragraph level
4) (if absolutely necessary) conditon at the sentence level

Avoid conditions within sentences (i.e. fragments). That always causes ...

Re: Output file size (CHM)

Try decompiling the CHM (using HTML Help workshop or FAR help). Then use a small utility called DiskFrontier to graphically represent the folder that you have decompiled to. That should give you an idea where the size is coming from.

However... I'm curious to know if (in a pinch) finding a vendor that can use Frame (I know they are out there), if somehow you couldn't work something out that way? any comments from anyone on this idea?

Re: v4.2 importing issues (e.g previous files not deleted)

I downgraded toi v4.1 and everything is working again (i.e. when I build the target with linked files, the old ones are removed as expected before being replaced with newly generated ones).

What is odd is that the release notes didn't mention much in the way of changes to Frame importing, so I ...

v4.2 importing issues (e.g previous files not deleted)

I have been battling a problem with v4.2 all morning, and wondering if others are finding the same. A number of my projects (which include links to Frame files) were quite happily working with 4.1, but after the upgade I am finding the following:
1) a reference to styles1.css has appeared in the ...

Re: Link Generated Files to Source Files not working

If you link to a book, the timestamp on the book must change to force a regenerate. One way to do this is: (in FM) drag a document in the book up and then down one place, and click FIle>Save. Then build the target.

One way around this is to include all framemaker documents rather than the book in ...

Re: Animation in PDF

From my (limited) testing, movies (e.g. swf) don't work if going from Flare to PDF. If you go direct to PDF, you end up with a gray box. If you have a FrameMaker or Word target (with option to create PDF selected), the movie is dropped altogether. It may be worth directing your question to tech ...

Re: Compiler caching obsolete topic names

I would recommend decompiling the CHM, and have the look at the actual files that are being compiled. You can use HTML Help Workshop (File>Decompile) for this, and FARHelp also has tools that use can use to examine CHMs.

In the files that are decompiled, search (windows seach would do) for files ...

Re: Problems Applying Stylesheet Instead of Local Formatting

I agree that tidying up the code is the best way, but an alternative may be to use !important in your CSS (be careful though, as this means you will not be able to use certain local formatting for tags that use that class - although it sounds like that is what you want)

Open your stylesheet in a ...

Re: FM print-only xrefs showing up in WebHelp output

Looking at the code, there are an awful lot of "class=" references in those paragraphs, of particular concern are two different classes for italics. More than likely some kind of override sneaking in there, even though all looks well. If you save Frame to mif, and are able to compare a paragraph ...

Tables from FrameMaker include extra inline styles

Every table from FrameMaker, even though Preserve Table Styles is turned off and the table is exactly as defined in the FrameMaker table designer, imports with a bunch of extra inline styles. For example,
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="Default" height="357px" style="border-spacing-x ...

Re: Add a non-scrolling area to a topic

I don't think setting Autoscroll to Hidden for headings would work, but by all means give it a go.

There are many different ways of achieving this (seach for "non scrolling region" in Google) using frames, CSS, floating windows etc. But I think you'll find what I described is the simplest and less ...

It sounds like I need start by making a master page and styling my headings in a DIV with a no scroll value. I will let you know of my progress .

Hi Paul
I don't want to make a movie at all. All I want to do is string a series of discrete screen shots together, with callouts and boxes added on, and the ability to navigate. The user clicks a Next / Previous button to move between screens. That's all there is to it.
Sounds like you want a ...
