What version of Flare and FrameMaker? I had problems with Flare 4 and imported conditions (when appearing at the start of a paragraph and ending part way through) not being applied. I raised a bug and it appears to be fixed though in later versions.

Re: Can I use breadcrumbs without a master page?
Short answer is no, you can't have breadcrumbs without a master page (and TOC).
The good news is master pages are only used in the build process, you don't need to distribute them with your output. Go into the output folder and copy only the generated htm files, along with other relevant Content ...

Re: Flare in Action!
This is my first web help site built using Flare 6. It's pretty vanilla-flavoured but it all works, as far as I know. There is also a toolbar link to a PDF version of the same guide, which also generated using Flare.

Re: Error during Framemaker import caused by PDF file creation
I would try reinstalling Acrobat. I've run into problems in the past where FrameMaker was installed after Acrobat, and Flare gets confused between the PDF Maker tool installed with FM and the full version of Acrobat. Reinstalling Acrobat has solved the problem.

So you are merging help systems and the TOC for the master project is not appearing as you want, and you want more info from the Flare help? Hopefully the following info is of use.

I think it varies depending on target. For me, HTML help strips the link info but leaves the text, for word output the link and text is removed.

Re: Disabling glossary terms
Yep, in your stylesheet create a new span class (call it DisableGlossary for example). The only property for that class should be mc-disable-glossary-terms , which you set to true. Then for every instance of "Order" you do not want a glossary entry for, apply the Span.DisableGlossary class.

Re: authoring externally managed data
In Flare the content files are xhtml (not xml) - and I'm not sure your database would be able to handle that? If it can then your idea may be feasible, I would have a play with the Flare sample project and open files in a text editor to see the kind of format(s) the various files require. In ...

Re: Flare reimport from FrameMaker not overwriting files
One additional note, the auto-reimport option was never that great anyway. It only reimports when there is a time-stamp change on a FrameMaker book, not the files within that book. Quite often there can be changes to files, but no actual update to the book and Flare would not pick this up. So as I ...

Re: Flare reimport from FrameMaker not overwriting files
It's a bug. "Auto-reimport before 'Generate Output'" doesn't work very will in Flare 5/6, and as you observed creates a lot of duplicate files. Instead, clear that option, and use the manual method (this is better anyway as it gives you more control as to when you reimport.

Re: When to start new project within established one?
Same project (pros): you can easily reuse styles, master pages, skins etc.
(cons): you have to use conditions to exclude irrelevant content.
My 2c - the pros outweigh the slight overhead of topic or folder conditions, so I would definitely use the same project.

Also, all topics within 1 folder are listed with "Missing Source Link . . ." errors. They have previously compiled and "linked" just fine.

Re: search woes
You are right with your assumption, the online targets (webhelp, HTML help etc) will search through every topic in the project, even if not in the TOC. It's not so weird when you think of the TOC as one way to access information (not the only way) and some projects may be set up with a minimal TOC ...

I fear this won't help in your situation (due to the QRC), but we use mediums for the different languages and it works quite well. E.g.

Short Lines I think is just for the output (e.g. PDF) only.
I don't think it is the internal text editor's word wrapping (although you might want to disable the "Word Wrapping" button above the internal text editor and see if it makes a difference.

Build webhelp (or webhelp mobile) as normal (i.e. with the TOC and skin etc). But then only distribute the HTM, CSS and image files from your output/target/ content directory (i.e. don't send Default.htm, Default.js etc, or the "Data" or "Skin" folders).

3 things you've touched on:
