Re: Starting Flare - Slow

 Oops sorry, yes! That is in fact GBs of RAM.

And yes, it is slow on both laptop and desktop. It's something like 20 - 25 seconds before I see the round Flare icon appear.

Starting Flare - Slow

Sorry if this has come up before and I've missed it in my forum search.

I find that Flare, right up to and including V8 very slow to start. I've a desktop with Windows 7 Professional and 3 MB ram, and a laptop with W7 Ultimate and 4 MB of ram, and it's the same on both. When I say slow, I mean to ...

TOC Levels - Setting for Word Output

I'm going round in circles trying to establish how to limit the levels of TOC output.

At the moment, I have 7 levels to Heading H1 thru H7, and all appear when I generate a Word file. I only want 3 or 4 levels.

You'd think it would be simple, but I just cannot see exactly how to achieve this ...

Re: Need to Generate Braille Output

Hi Nancy,

Believe it or not, my major Flare project is authoring the Help for an Internationally known braille translation program. And needless to say, we even have an "Emboss Topic" button so that a Topic can be sent out to a braille printer.

I don't want to break any list rules here, but am ...

Index in Word as Hyperlinks

I'm struggling with Flare's Help to find out how to create a Word Index which is Hyperlinked - i.e. in the same way as the Table of Contents.

Can anyone poiunt me in the right direction please?

Re: Search - Activating

Many, many thanks indeed - that did the trick.

However, it would have been good if MadCap had provided either a fix, or a warning. Or did I miss that?

Search - Activating

I'm having trouble activating Search - it comes up saying "No topics found".

It is (allegedly) check in the Skin, whikch is turn is assciated with the target.

I'm clearly missing something, but in spite of trawling though Flare 7's Help, I'm still stuck.

Any advice please?

Re: Adobe Air and speech output

Super! Someone who has at least used a screen reader.

Currently, VoiceOver is the only one available for the MAC - period! JAWS, Window Eyes and SuperNova, the three main ones, certainly are not.

Adobe Air certainly doesn't work as I've said, but HTML format does work with VoiceOver (Officially ...

Re: Adobe Air and speech output

There are two issues for blind screen reader users.

1) The installation process of AIR itself is inaccessable with VoiceOver
2) The AIR Help format will not speak Topics.

So the bottom line is that if you need to be Section 508 Compliant, you've no alternative but to use WebHelp and fiddle around ...

Re: Adobe Air and speech output

Not as a complete "single-source" solution. There appear to be additional requirements and modifications needed to some of the files in order for them to integrate with the overall Apple Help system.

I have to add that I do find it odd that Madcap are using Adobe Air, since one of their competitors ...

Re: Adobe Air and speech output

Looks like we've got a nasty problem then. To be Section 508 complient, meet UK accessibility laws, and others world-wide, we need to generate screen reader/Voice Over accessible Help for MAC. Surprise, surprise, you can't even install Adobe Air using VoiceOver, so we are stuck at the very first ...

Adobe Air and speech output

Has anyone any experience of producing .air files for a MAC and using "VoiceOver" on the MAC?

VoiceOver is reading/speaking the menus, but we're stuck in terms of getting speech from the Topic content.

Re: Kindle Output

Good suggestion, but extra work. If you've not already seen it, it's worth getting a hold of "Amazon Kindle Publishing Guidelines"

http://s3.amazonaws.com/kindlegen/Amazo ... elines.pdf

It's a free download.

Re: Kindle Output

Many thanks for your advice and comments.

What I was rather (optimistically perhaps) hoping for, was that Flare or someone might have developed Templates, etc., to aid the production of such simplistic HTML files for Kindle conversion.

I have to say that I've so far been very impressed so far with ...

Kindle Output

Apologies if this has already been raised, but wanted to know if there had been anything made available to assist with preparing documents for the Kindle?

The requirements are for quite basic HTML, which suggests it would not exactly be rocket science. I've used their "KindleGen" application on an ...

Re: Equation Editor

I know the Design Science guys very well. Looks like I'll have to do some screen shots for Madcap and see if they've any ideas what the problem(s) might be. It's not a very good implementation when you compare it to MathType and are so used to that application. It also fails to carry Alt Tags over ...

Has anyone else put the new insert equation feature to work yet? I'm seeing display problems on both Windows 7 64 bit and Vista 32 bit, and find it hard to believe I have two suspect video cards.

It also seems to take an age to come up as well as save, even on a Windows 7 Professional system with 4 ...

Re: Alt Tags in Word Images

Not really! Persuading certain users to do things properly is harder. You guys here invariably observe Layouts and Styles properly. Unfortunately young Annie who has been using Word for 10 years is still formatting things like Headings the hard way. You would apply a Style and it would be easy to ...

Re: Alt Tags in Word Images

Actually Madcap have acknowledged it as a bug, and I even have a Bug Number.

Your "caption" suggestion is a good one and indeed was used by a colleague, who then changed font colour to be the same as the background, and therefor invisible to the sighted print reader. You might raise an eyebrow at ...

Re: .AIR output (Problem Solved)

Well, surprise, surprise! It appears that the Adobe AIR installer does not like "Reserved Characters" such as ampersands in file names, contained in just one of mine called "Registration_&_Licensing.htm".

However, in the Target's Properties for AIR, in the "Advanced" section, is a check box ...

Re: .AIR output

Perhaps I'm being a shade to hard here, but given the cost of two Flare Licenses, and two Gold Support Contracts, I don't mind doing some investigative work, but the line has to be drawn somewhere.

The main project is biggish, but simple. (Content folder contains 1,271 files - 23MB) The majority of ...

Re: .AIR output

I've raised a Support Case, but no resolution as yet.

However as part of the test process I did build a very simple project from scratch, and compiled that. It worked on both Windows 7 (x64), Vista (32 bit) and our developer's MAC system.

So pending further investigation, our own conclusion is ...

Clearly something is amiss. On both my Windows 7 Pro 64 and on the MAC, when you run the .air it first displays "Getting Ready to install this application" with a progress bar about 1/6th of the way.
Then a really helpful message appears!! "Sorry, an error has occurred. The application could not be ...
