Re: How do you paste a table into Flare?
Ha ha
(hangs head in shame). I'm sure I tried that ages ago, that it didn't work, so I'd stopped even noticing its existence. I've just tried it again and it's fine, even with tables with merged cells.

How do you paste a table into Flare?
Pasting into Flare has improved in v4.x, but it's still got a way to go.
I don't want to import a whole Word doc or XLS, but I would like to be able to paste a simple table from either of those apps into Flare, even if it loses all the formatting, i.e. so that the text stays in the correct rows and ...

Re: Sharing content between projects
Another option for what to do about hyperlinks that you may not want in all destinations: you could put shared content in snippets, rather than topics. That way, you could have different (or no) hyperlinks in each destination topic.

Re: I don't quite understand Snippets
Snippets are not globally linked, right? Flare help says, "If you need to modify the content of a snippet, you only need to change it in one place and the change is made automatically everywhere that the snippet is added."

Re: I don't quite understand Snippets
A couple of related points to note:
If you change a snippet or topic that will be imported into child projects, the child project doesn't know about the change until it starts to compile. You couldn't really expect it to, but it's worth remembering that it's not quite as "automatic" as implied ...

Re: Style Window not listing all styles available
It's not the only CSS in the project, but when I opened the topic in the internal text editor, only the one I want to use is mentioned.
In terms of view, it is set to "Layout (Web)", but then so are all the other topics that use the same CSS but which do let me select heading and other styles ...

You can't put condition tags on glossary entries, or even parts of them, can you? (It would be great if you could.)

Re: Style Window not listing all styles available
Thanks, I realise that. Even when in a p paragraph, it doesn't list any headings, even though they are listed when in a p paragraph in any other topic.

I have a project where all the topics use the same CSS, which includes various heading and other styles.

Re: Flare v4 Style Picker
To dock it, click and hold on the title bar. When you do this, you will see a number of blue arrows appear on the screen.
I've docked other things in Flare and in other apps that way, but can't get it to work for the style picker: as soon as I start to drag, it vanishes.

So the good news is that I should stick to my workaround and I don't need to log it; the less good new is that the fix isn't in 4.1. Thanks for the info though.

Re: Help window shrinks when compiled on build server
Thanks, but that doesn't seem to be the problem. When it compiles on the build server, the dimensions specified in the skin are halved.
For now, I've increased the dimensions to the max on the laptop where I compile. Then, when the build server halves the dimensions, although the window is still a ...

Re: Sharing content between projects
Re the issue of what to do about hyperlinks in topics from the parent project, I've just used GPL and conditions to import a topic that included hyperlinks to pages that I didn't want to include in the child. It worked, but I went rather a long way round, so suggest that anyone trying this remembers ...

Help window shrinks when compiled on build server
I'm currently on Flare v4.0 (and hope to upgrade to 4.1 mid January) with Win XP. I compile the help locally, and whilst my content and project folders are in TFS source control, my output is not; the help is recompiled on a build server as part of a continuous build process.

Re: Best way to make entire topic conditional?
Actually, you don't need to set a condition in the TOC: if you set a condition on the topic in Content Explorer, it will automatically be excluded from the TOC.
I think that condition-tagging the TOC is a holdover from the old RoboHelp conditions.
That's neat, thanks. That said, from an author's ...

Re: Best way to make entire topic conditional?
Although you need to set a condition for the topics in the TOC, you must also set it for the topics themselves in Content Explorer. If you only set a condition in the TOC, the topics can still be found in the compiled help via Search and any hyperlinks etc to it (and probably, though I haven't ...

Hi Gary, your screenshot is exactly the sort of problem I was getting with the first release of 4.1. I've rolled back to 4.0 and am watching and waiting before trying a newer 4.1, so please post back here when you're confident you're not getting the problem in any topics. Thanks.

Can you elaborate on what those bugs are and can anyone from MadCap say when the next release might be?
Having upgrade to 4.1 and rolled back to 4.0, we're holding off upgrading again till we're sure the benefits outweigh the potential problems.

Re: Flare 4.1 so far
Lots of people posted on the four or five topics about problems with the initial release of v4.1, particularly span text becoming invisible, and many of them rolled back to v4.0 (including me).
MadCap quickly released a fixed version, but what news since? Presumably the lack of subsequent posts ...

Search in html output stopped working
I created a project in 3.x. Another author has worked on it 4.0, which I now have too.
The skin includes a Search tab and has Show Advanced Search enabled and it certainly used to work in the output.

No way to do it that I've seen. There's also no way to control the display of the file (page only, bookmarks and page, etc.) or to control the file properties information. I'm having to change those manually in the PDF output by modifying it in Acrobat after I build the file.
