Re: SVG not converted to PNG in Flare 8 WebHelp

I should note that I only have IE 8 installed and could not test IE 9.

One other note, I tested this initially with the HTML5 output, but I just tested this with older webhelp output and the result was the same.

Ironically, I'm probably one of the people who complained about how this worked in ...

Re: SVG not converted to PNG in Flare 8 WebHelp

I just tested this and you are correct, they are not converted. The next question becomes what should the correct behavior be? In Safari, FireFox, and Chrome the .svg images are displayed correctly, it seems only in Internet Explorer I'm not seeing the .svg images. But since this is suppose to be ...

Re: Different Set of Images for Different Targets?

Then you insert that snippet into at least 5 different topics, right?

The opposite. There is 1 topic that I want to reuse for all targets. The snippet will probably end up containing an almost unlimited number of conditioned screenshots. Personally, I don't think this is a truly scalable approach ...

Re: Repeating a table caption when table spans multiple pages

First, make sure you are editing the right css for caption. That is, either default, Print, or Non-Print.

Here is what I use for my numbering in the caption element:

Gt: {b}Table {Gn+} {/b}

The Gt: is for global, so I get my numbering to be across the entire document. However, you probably want ...

Re: Hidden text

Lisa is correct. DITA supports a draft-comments element. Since we're partly a DITA shop, I have to support that tag in my css. What I do is publish the draft comments in our review/draft stage using conditions, and turn off the comments when I publish a final copy.

Now, I also support text colors ...

Re: numbered lists, sub headings, continue numbering

Thinking about this a bit more thanks to Leon, I'm not sure I would go with Global numbering since you probably want to have a '1' again. ;)

Use Leon's suggestion instead.

Re: numbered lists, sub headings, continue numbering

Setup a global number type and it will do exactly what you want. The Prefix format is:

Gx:

where x is any letter you want. I use L for lists P for paragraphs, etc.

This is covered pretty well in the help by the way. You may want to look there for additional formatting.

Re: Repeating a table caption when table spans multiple pages

In tables, you must use caption in order to get the continued tag in your table captions. It sounds like you may a paragraph style you use in place of the caption. If that is the case, then you will not see (Continued) in the text.

Re: Can I create a variable variable?

This issue is one that plagues all topic-based writing. We've talked about internally here at work and haven't found a great answer ourselves. It has sprung up on the DITA user list over the past couple of years and again, there hasn't been a great answer other than some XML transforms during the ...

Re: Flare 8 Ribbon debate

I switched to the ribbon and initially spent a lot of time going back-and-forth between the two interfaces. With the quick access menu though, I find myself sticking to the ribbon. It helps a bit, but I certainly see where the arguments against the ribbon being less efficient are very valid. It's in ...

I have the exact same issue. I worked around it by using the old HTML trick of making the top of the graphic "taller" with white space set to invisible. I never found a better solution.

Re: Related Topics in PDF version?

Have you thought about using a relationship table? Reltables are carry-overs from DITA and seem to be exactly what you're looking for. Once you've created the Reltable, you would insert the relationship table proxy into each topic. The actual links then are controlled by a single item. In DITA they ...

Pretty simple, is it possible to rename files within Flare based on the heading level or topic name, TOC label etc?

I don't know of a way to do inside Flare automatically, but you could do this via a very simple script in [insert your scripting language of choice]. You simply would have to ...

Re: Naming PDF output automatically

What I've found is often times, that the first time I enter a name into the Output file section of the PDF Target, then save it, it reverts back to (default). However, usually when I rename it the second time it stays and my PDF comes out with this name. Not sure why it does this, but I've seen this ...

Liz: I'll have to play with the DITA Glossary. It was enhanced in DITA 1.2 and we're still using DITA 1.1 here at work.

Re: Glossary questions

As far as I know, you can't add columns. The glossary is setup for (Term : Definition of Term), Much like in DITA where you have <dt> <dd> pairs. Now, DITA does allow you to have a real glossary that has the flexibility you are looking for, but I don't think Flare would support it very well (and I ...

I would probably attack this differently. In fact, my PDF output for my corporate pages is very similar to what you want. Initially I avoided a table in my heading area, but in the end I went back to a table for the heading.

In the page layout area create a static image for your logo. The ...

Yes, you can do this and it works VERY well. You will need two page layouts. One portrait, one landscape. In your TOC, find the topic you want the landscape page for and in Flare 8, choose page format break. Then assign the landscape page type to that topic. Make sure you open the next topic ...

Doxygen is crap HTML. There's pretty much no other way to say it. I ended up writing a script to parse the Doxygen output and rewrote the contents so they ended up as DITA topics with a proper DITAmap. These imported just fine into Flare. The Doxygen by itself however was a mess that required a ton ...

So I took a look at this and you're right. However, I'm not really sure what Madcap has is the wrong behavior either.

According to the DITA spec,
is placed between the title and the body, and used when the initial paragraph of a topic isn't suitable for a link preview. This means, that ...

I need to search around and see if I can find a solution to this, but I'm not holding my breath.
