Ben:
Thanks for your reply. I'm familiar with the behavior that you describe from Flare 7.
But nothing of the sort is happening in my brand new installation of Flare 8. Moreover, my click-through of the Touring the Flare Workspace for version 8 seems to be explicitly saying that certain tools are ...

RESOLVED: In TOC, want Chapnum for un-numbered H1s?
Ah, okay — I get it. The idea is to add autonumbering to a style (in my case H1), then use a separate span class to suppress the display of that autonumbering when the style is used in a topic. Flare will then include that "hidden" autonumbering in the generated TOC.

Okay, I've created a span class with Chapnum autonumbering, then set that span class's Block display equal to none .
But now I can't figure out where to apply that span class. That is to say that with display equal to none , I can't apply it to the H1 itself(?)

Re: Can you put auto-numbers in generated TOC styles?
I'm certainly no expert, but in general I've observed that in print TOCs (PDFs, for example), the TOC typically acquires any autonumber information from the heading level itself.
So, if one has an H1 that has no autonumbering, then no autonumbering appears in the corresponding TOC1 entry ...
