Re: Page flow not working - get even numbers on RH pages in PDF

Update.

Following some offline assistance from LTinker68 (thank you so much for your help) it turns out that I'm expecting Flare to do things it's not capable of doing. So because I'm using a "facing pages" layout with left and right pages being different, all my chapters HAVE to have an even ...

Re: Is there a "Smart Quotes" setting somewhere?

Hi Bob

Thanks for the tip - didn't notice the "find in project" bit before, so for other global changes I've been tediously opening, searching and closing topics all over the place.

Also good to have the codes to search for, though copying and pasting from Word seems to do the trick too.

And I've ...

Re: Too many levels in my PDF TOC

Good grief, a question I can answer - must be learning something!

I've had a similar problem, and one thing I did to fiddle with it is to edit the styles for your H2 and H3 headings so that mc-toc-level is set to 0, rather than 2 or 3.

Hope that helps - it took me ages to find it so I hope I've ...

Re: Too many headings in my printed TOC

Cheers bob, your encouragement is welcome. (And it's not so much a learning curve as a learning cliff - with overhang!)

I'm just going to give up with having different levels in PDF bookmarks and printed, it's just one too many problems to resolve. Unless of course anyone does know how to do it ...

Is there a "Smart Quotes" setting somewhere?

Hi.

I am typing directly into a Flare project, and instead of getting nice and pretty curly quote marks, it just sticks the bog-standard straight ones in.

Is there a setting anywhere (as there is in Word) for ' and " to be converted automatically to curly quotes as you enter them?

If not, is ...

Re: Oddball instructions question

To get round the localisation problem, any pics I've put in my little book just have numbers as callouts, with a key in the Flare file to what the numbers mean.

Re: Page flow not working - get even numbers on RH pages in PDF

Just done the test, and even with the first paragraph of a new chapter being bog-standard Body text (definitely no breaks before) it sticks page 10 on a right hand page, after page 9, the last page of the previous topic, which was a right-hand page.

So it's not to do with the Heading 1 style.

For ...

Re: Page flow not working - get even numbers on RH pages in PDF

Definitely not set to force RH page. I'm going to test it by making the H1 on the first occurrence into a body text and regenerating but I don't hold out much hope. Will let you know but please keep the ideas coming.

Re: Page flow not working - get even numbers on RH pages in PDF

I know how it's supposed to work if you WANT to force every new chapter to start on a specific page, but I don't want to, it just insists on starting a new chapter on a right-hand page, even if that's an even number, and even if there's no empty page beforehand (which I don't want anyway, which is ...

Page flow not working - get even numbers on RH pages in PDF

Hi

I am a new Flare user, and finding the learning cliff very difficult to climb. I have a pretty uncomplicated book to do, only 70-odd pages, and I'm REALLY regretting not doing the blasted thing just in Word, but the decision was made and now I'm stuck with it. (Could have had it done and ...

Too many headings in my printed TOC

Hi all

I am trying to generate a table of contents in a PDF, and at the moment it's putting in too many heading levels.

I have a document that uses h1.heading1 to h4.heading 4, and that's what's coming up in the generated TOC but I only want it to have H1 and H2 included.

This is what I have done ...

Re: Hanging indents, how?

A quick update on the code I posted earlier, which I hadn't noticed until I looked more closely at the output.

What you might see if you look closely at the output is that there's a number 1 superimposed on all the other number bullets, which is not what I want (unsurprisingly). So in case anyone ...

Re: Unable to change font color of text

If it's just one sentence, could you use the "sledgehamer to crack a nut" approach and just delete the offending sentence and re-type it? I know that wouldn't explain what happened but might allow you to get moving.

Alternatively, for the future how about creating a span that changes the colour and ...

Re: Hanging indents, how?

Thanks again.

I thought for a moment that I'd have to press spacebar multiple times to get things to line up, but now I realise you mean I should set the indent by mucking about with the -40/40 measurement so the indent ends after the word I want to "hang". Thing is, I want my "Note", "Tip" and ...

Re: DITA for translating, PDF output (Gen translation question)

Ask the translators what they use. You might find they can work happily with Flare files, so you'd be able to send them your Flare project and let them do the assorted bits of fiddling that are needed before delivering a final Flare project to you.

Nita, that's great!

Find the nearest Christmas tree and sit on the top of it for you are most truly a star. :

You can't start shining yet though, as I don't know how to get the paragraph AFTER the first word to line up with the rest of the paragraph.

Here's what I mean:

Re: Graphics alongside numbered or bulleted lists

I suspect I may need to have two different <p> styles, <p.Numbered1> which has the start as 1, and <p.Numbered> which continues the numbering scheme.

Thanks Dave, that kind of mirrors how I had done it in Word so I'm comfortable with the concept. (Might struggle a bit with the implementation, but that's nothing new! :) )

Thanks Nita as well, I hadn't thought to look at the built topic. When I did, I notice all of the graphics I've put in whether ...

Hanging indents, how?

I am trying to create a style that uses a hanging indent, for example a note or tip where the word "Note" is in line with the left margin and all the rest of the text is indented by, say, 20mm. There are a few of these paragraphs, Tip and Caution leap to mind. Another suggestion would be to use an ...

Re: Graphics alongside numbered or bulleted lists

That book looks ideal, I'm off to find my credit card! Does it cover v6?

Yes, that's exactly what I was trying.

The problem is, when I put the text in the first cell of the table and made it a list, it still didn't show its numbers for some reason.

If I do manage to get the numbers to stay put, is there something in particular I need to do or not do to the table so ...

As a completely new user more familiar with Word and Frame, I'm finding Flare is really hard work, and I just can't find a solution to my problem.

Re: Exporting for translation

It depends on how you're having it translated. A reputable localisation agency will do it all for you, extracting the translatable text for translators to work with while protecting all the html code so it doesn't get broken, they'll also use a translation memory so you get the benefit of re-use of ...
