high-level overview please

I'm finding what's missing from the help is a top-level 'how things work', which would enable me to solve many of the issues I'm having. The descriptions in there just don't seem to apply or work as expected.

can't delete profile

I want to call the profile my name instead of MyProfile. So I renamed and keep getting MyProfile - which I cannot delete, and which keeps being applied and recreated. It seems you can't change the name of this, or control which profile is used for an image.

since I'm moving files back and forth, I ...

Re: Links vs Cross-Ref

Also, what are the advantages of using xref instead of just a link? Linking to a topic is MUCH easier, so now I'd like justification for doing this (tho like many things Flare, once it's done it's done. I think.)

thanks again

Re: Links vs Cross-Ref

Thanks so much, folks!
This is fantastic help, clear and in the right order and all the details are there. Or so it seems, we'll see when I try and do it :)

I've used Author-it extensively and there are not nearly so many steps required. Course Flare has its definite advantages too, cost and ...

Links vs Cross-Ref

The jumpstart course advised to use cross-refs instead of links. Can't remember all the reasons but it sounded good, everything updates better, etc.

However, I'm used to being able to link a topic to some text and have the text just show as a hyperlink in the tool (Flare). Then I set the link type ...

plainer, smaller arrows

The arrows in Capture are huge and take over. Am I missing something, or is it really required to go in and edit the pixel dimensions of each piece in order to change?

Even when I pick the straight ones, it uses those funky curvy ones. I can copy an arrow from that Select Shape Style window and ...

Re: Problems running Flare on Mac

Hi there

So I've installed Parallels and Flare just fine, opens up and all. However, I copied the Project files (whole folder) as I need to move between home (Mac) and office. When I point to the *.flprj file it brings up a Copy to Project dialog - "The file is not within a project. To open, select ...

Re: Invisible comments

This is not working as expected.

annotations DO publish in output, which is what I don't want. I'm back to conditions, but it's two steps - apply the formatting so I can visually see where the comments are, and apply a condition to the text.

not the easiest...

Re: Mapping list styles for imported Word content

Thanks for this!
FYI, it should be repeatable - I was on the phone with Madcap engineer, who thought the designated stylesheet needed to be outside the current project, but when he tried that it didn't work either - still created style1.css

This would be great to resolve, as my first tasks are ...

Invisible comments

I want to make comments in topics - these are for my use only, eg 'do not publish'

Can anyone make suggestions as to best way to do this? It seems a vital part of single-sourcing, to be able to annotate without leaving the content in an unpublishable state (or rely on going back later) but I don't ...

Re: Mapping list styles for imported Word content

So it seems possible that, if there are list styles in a Word doc you're importing, Flare will create a styles1.css file - and I can't see any difference between this one and the styles.css one, which is what I pointed to and what I want to use.

In my case, I did _not_ want to preserve any Word ...

Re: Mapping list styles for imported Word content

I'm also finding the Word import problematic. Seems like something different happens every time I import this one doc - last time was TOC bookmarks in each topic, so imported the doc with no TOC (it's small so just as easy to recreate, but going forward this is painful). I'm now saving as *.doc ...

Re: Auto generating TOC

Thanks, I'm sorting this out now tho parts are confusing. If you import into an existing project, there's a Master TOC and the one from your import - if you create a project by importing, it creates a new TOC (and stylesheet) and overrides the Master. That seems to be the main diff, tho it's taken ...

Re: Auto generating TOC

Hi there

I'm just starting out with Flare, more familiar with a tool where all these things are automated so would appreciate any help.

I imported Word docs and _did_ get a TOC, but just now did not. The first time (I think) I created a project by importing a word doc. This created a toc that ...
