Re: Term/definition list formatting

There are several different ways of doing this, but I don't know any way to get Flare to recognize the first word as such, and style it, without you identifying it as separate to the explanation, by using at least a span tag.

Here are two techniques I've used for similar things:

1. Easiest in my ...

Re: Formatting Variables: Only Works Sometimes

So far as I am aware transparency has never been well respected in Flare pdfs.

I have dealt with the occasional 'on button arrow' this way:

On html5:
html5_button_arrow.png

On pdf:
pdf_button_arrow.png

In this case my button snippet looks like this
<body> <img src="../Images/EdgeConnector ...

Re: Formatting Variables: Only Works Sometimes

Sorry, this is not a solution, but I have had a similar experience and would like to compare notes.

My button names are in snippets rather than variables, but I also found that I could not get padding respected when building a pdf.

After much experimentation I settled for this:

html5: html5 ...

Re: MadCap DropDowns Print Gray Bottom Border Despite Styles

I have managed to do this on a recent project of mine, so I've just been looking at how I did it.

You don't say which of the dropDown styles you are changing, so perhaps that is the key.
My MadCap|dropDownBody style has border-bottom: none; in the print medium, where the other mediums have border ...

breaks in code strings

I've been working on an API document and I want to have chunks of text that must stick together.
For this I use:
span.keeptogether
{
white-space: nowrap;
}
This didn't used to work in the pdf complier in earlier versions of Flare, but it does now (yeah!).... only a bit too well.

If I have an ...

It may just be a question of syntax. Have you tried referring to background-color and putting commas between the values?

Text file import automation

I have a string of find and replace operations I need to do to any new topic I add to my project:
- remove <style>...</style>
- replace " class=???????" with ""
- remove "<span>"
- remove "</span>"
etc....

Can anyone suggest the best way to automate/combine these operations? I am pretty sure this ...

Re: "Auto Sync Import"/Auto-reimport not working

A few checks to suggest

1. Are your imported files actually linked? - you can see the link icons against the expected files in your Content Explorer. (If you edit a linked file you get the option to break the link, so they might have been broken. Equally, if you didn't tick 'Link Generated Files to ...

Re: Flare does not insert empty pages (for me)

It doesn't sound like you have left and right pagination going on.
If you have a left page and a right page in your page layout can you start on a right page and insist on ending on a left page (or not).
If your page type is normal for every page there is no left or right distinction.

I would add ...

Re: Common Setting in all Images in a Flare project

First you need to say where you want the images to behave like this. At first I thought you meant your xml editor view of the project, which depends on the medium you select (although you can separately switch on 'Show all images as thumbnails'), but then you talk about a user printing a page so ...

Re: Suppression of pop-ups in .pdf

If you look at the Madcap Flare help you will see popups are supported in all of the online help formats but not at all in pdf.
You need to style the popup text for the print medium so that it is displayed in the flow of text (if it is text you want to see there).
This is where online and pdf ...

Re: Content from body appearing in footer and header of page

I can only suggest taking a look at the code of your page layout file. (This is generally my last resort.)

It should be structured something like:
<Page Name="Left"....>
<Frame Flow="body"...>
</Frame>
<Frame Flow="decoration"...>
</Frame>
<Frame Flow="footer"...>
<Content>
.....
</Content ...

Re: Content from body appearing in footer and header of page

Maybe you have already checked this, but...
Are you certain you used actual Header and Footer frames in these positions (check Frame Properties > Flow says Header or Footer), or are they in fact Body frames positioned where the header and footer should go?
Flare will happily flow text into several ...

Re: Two users get different PDF output from the same target

This may not help, but I have to say that this seems to tap into the inherent weirdness of pictures embedded in page layouts, which I have come across before.

I have seen that when one page layout is copied to create a new one some embedded images stop displaying, for reasons I have not been able ...

Re: Newbie getting killed by an unwanted PDF page break

The only thing that comes to mind is that you have either:
(a) not added a body frame on that first page layout that is called up for chapter 1, or
(b) got content that is too large for the body frame. (This might happen if your styles are insisting that a mass of things all stay together, or your ...

Re: Online Help structure for modular products

It rather depends how many modules there are and how intertwined they are...

If you have modules A, B and C but people most often buy A and B together or they buy C alone you might want to have help for 'A and B combined' as well as help for 'just A' or 'just B' or 'just C'. This involves setting ...

Re: Transferring MadCap Flare Licence Between Laptop and Des

Generally MadCap licence arrangements allow you to run on two computers simultaneously (so long as you don't use them both at work) so that you don't have to keep transferring the license to work from home, for exactly this scenario.
If you do have to transfer I have experienced some lag - around ...
