There are several different ways of doing this, but I don't know any way to get Flare to recognize the first word as such, and style it, without you identifying it as separate to the explanation, by using at least a span tag.

So far as I am aware transparency has never been well respected in Flare pdfs.

I have dealt with the occasional 'on button arrow' this way:

On html5:

Sorry, this is not a solution, but I have had a similar experience and would like to compare notes.

My button names are in snippets rather than variables, but I also found that I could not get padding respected when building a pdf.

It may just be a question of syntax. Have you tried referring to background-color and putting commas between the values?

I have a string of find and replace operations I need to do to any new topic I add to my project:
- remove <style>...</style>
- replace " class=???????" with ""
- remove "<span>"
- remove "</span>"
etc....

A few checks to suggest

1. Are your imported files actually linked? - you can see the link icons against the expected files in your Content Explorer. (If you edit a linked file you get the option to break the link, so they might have been broken. Equally, if you didn't tick 'Link Generated Files to ...

It doesn't sound like you have left and right pagination going on.
If you have a left page and a right page in your page layout can you start on a right page and insist on ending on a left page (or not).
If your page type is normal for every page there is no left or right distinction.

I can only suggest taking a look at the code of your page layout file. (This is generally my last resort.)

It should be structured something like:
<Page Name="Left"....>
<Frame Flow="body"...>
</Frame>
<Frame Flow="decoration"...>
</Frame>
<Frame Flow="footer"...>

</Content ...

Are you certain you used actual Header and Footer frames in these positions (check Frame Properties > Flow says Header or Footer), or are they in fact Body frames positioned where the header and footer should go?

Generally MadCap licence arrangements allow you to run on two computers simultaneously (so long as you don't use them both at work) so that you don't have to keep transferring the license to work from home, for exactly this scenario.
