Re: Basic Editing
UPDATE: We bought Camtasia and I've created dozens of videos, mostly tutorials under 8 minutes but also some short-short videos demonstrating very quick actions - what you'd expect of an animated GIF a few seconds long, except these are regular MP4s. I embed them using the <Object> tags and they are...

Alert: If You Embed "Private" Vimeo Videos...
I just had an issue with a private Vimeo file embedded in a Flare topic. Though the old videos are still playing, a video I just uploaded wouldn't display or play. Vimeo Support explained that they've stepped up their security (which I'll explain below), and new videos are required to comply. But so...

Re: Confirm process for merging topics
Thank you! Here's the revised process for anyone who wants to copy it: Topic 1 is the one you keep. Topic 2 is the one that goes away. • In the TOC, remove Topic 2 and SAVE. • Make sure all the <head> info in Topic 2 is also present in Topic 1. For example, table stylesheets. Copy anything needed in...

Confirm process for merging topics
I'm doing some cleanup in my project, including merging topics that were automatically split apart when I imported from Word. Can someone please vet my process? I'm not sure that all steps are necessary—or sufficient. Perhaps this will be helpful to others as well. Page 1 is the one you keep. Page 2...

Click Bullets, <p> remains
Has something changed in 2020 r2? Suddenly, if I hit Enter and click the Bullets button, I get <p> tags inside the new bullet. It looks like this: <ul> <li> <p> </p> </li> </ul> Instead of like this: <ul> <li> </li> </ul> This is a HUGE pain! Now I can't open the style drop-down and choose the lis...

Re: Mimic recorded just a few seconds
You were probably just looking at a single keyframe.
On the far left, at the top of the timeline, there are three selections: Movie View, Frame View, and Action View. It seems to default to Frame View.
Best of luck!

Basic Editing
I'm considering using Mimic for video tutorials, but I'm finding it hard to learn how to do the absolute most basic editing. By editing I mean slice out the stuff that doesn't belong (where I say "um, um, um," click the wrong button, or endure a long wait time because WFH VPN). MadCap is a...

Re: Micro Content button grayed out
Thanks! Using the block works for the entire list (<ul>) but not for a subset of bullets (<li>). That sounds picky, but sometimes I don't want the entire list to be part of my micro content. But when I tried to move the tags around in the HTML so only the text I wanted was part of the micro content,...

Micro Content button grayed out
When I select text in a topic, the Micro Content button isn't always available.
It seems that paragraph (<p>) text lights up the Micro Content button, but list text keeps it grayed out. H3 is good; H7 not so much.
I submitted the bug, but does anyone have a workaround?

Re: Formatting Variables: Only Works Sometimes
FOLLOW-UP: MadCap says they use a third-party engine to produce the PDF, and the bug lives in the engine. So it's not getting fixed as far as I can tell.

Re: Glossary terms as footnotes need to change the font size
If you take a look in the Output>Temporary folder, you should be able to find a folder with the name of your PDF target, with htm files in it. Take a look at the source of one of those htm files (one that has the glossary footnotes), and look at what class the footnotes are using. That should give ...

Re: Glossary terms in online output have extra space
The link to the image is broken. I see your reference to the image starts with ../../../ I don't know what it should be, but my image reference is ../../ when it should be only ../ —I reported this.
But thanks for the tip. Who needs that stupid icon?

Re: Should I create a Word target INSTEAD of PDF?
Thanks—I was hoping to hear honest opinions.
I'm fixing the border issues by putting my own borders on the darned images. The rest of the problems I can get around. I look forward to someday when some of these bugs are fixed.
Appreciate all the input!

Should I create a Word target INSTEAD of PDF?
Flare's PDF target seems so full of bugs, I'm considering creating a Word target instead and then exporting from PDF to Word. (I'm lucky to have Adobe Acrobat). Flare has trouble rendering styled text (see https://forums.madcapsoftware.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=32013 ), and the TOC is funky (see ...

Re: Formatting Variables: Only Works Sometimes
I put in a bug report for this. I also mentioned your snippets.
And I found something else: some of my buttons have a little drop-down arrow, so I added a transparent graphic to the text. But it's white in the PDF.

Formatting Variables: Only Works Sometimes
I have a style to mimic the look of a button in our software by adding a background color and a rounded border. Some buttons contain MadCap variables. Normally, styling works fine with variables - such as in headers, or when bolding. Click <span class="ButtonLD">Add/Edit <MadCap:variable n...

Multiple Indexes?
Is there a way to create multiple indexes? In my case, I just want to pull a list of reports into its own index. But what if I wanted, say, an index for dishes and an index for ingredients? If this exists in the documentation—by all means, point me to it! The term "multiple indexes" in the...

Re: MadCap DropDowns Print Gray Bottom Border Despite Styles
O the embarrassment! I discovered that my topics were connected to the wrong style sheet. A global search-and-replace inserted the style sheet I've been adjusting, in place of the former master style sheet that I copied last month in case these changes went bad. Even though I set the new styles.css ...

Re: Saving and linking PDF
I created a folder inside Resources called "Docs"—name as you please. To save steps, when the PDF opens after building, "Save As" to your version of "Docs." Otherwise the PDF lives in your Output folder, in the subfolder for that target, which is separate from the subfo...

Thanks, @ajturnersurrey, for your response! It hasn't helped so far, but let me be clearer in explaining what I have. 1: Here's a sample of the code. You'll see there are no classes: <MadCap:dropDown> <MadCap:dropDownHead> <MadCap:dropDownHotspot>Current Open Windows</MadCap:dropDownHotspot> </MadCa...

MadCap DropDowns Print Gray Bottom Border Despite Stylesheet
I'm using MadCap DropDowns in my online help. In the PDF version, there's a gray, 1-pixel bottom-border after each drop-down section. Meaning you see the header, the body, and then a gray horizontal line before the next section begins. How do I get rid of the horizontal line? I understand how to ope...

Re: Best practices using javascript & local help pages
The customer will not be able to change these variables/terms themselves in the built output - you can only change the variables BEFORE you build the target output. Thanks @DavidLee, in this stage of the development, I will produce just a few different targets using these variables to change key te...
