Re: Analyzer....so....slow.....
Oh and to add insult to injury, Analyzer grabs a whopping 1.2GB (!) of RAM during the segment scan, slowing my computer to an absolute crawl. Yikes. Time to cancel this experiment. It made it to segment 300.

Re: Analyzer....so....slow.....
After browsing the user manual, I decided I'd try searching my project for similar segments to weed out inconsistent wording. I start the "Similar Segments" search and got the standard "Loading...this may take several minutes to complete". I look at the status bar at the message ...

Analyzer....so....slow.....
Hello everyone. I'm a veteran Flare user who managed to convince TPTB to pony up for an Analyzer license. I am running it on our main project right now and the first thing that struck me is, "Man, this thing is slow! ". :( For example, when opening my Flare project, the Analyzer Summary wa...

Re: Cross references to autonumbered tables
Hi Riley. Are you trying to cross reference only to the numeric portion of your table caption? For example, "Table 23: Audit Codes". Did you only want the '23' portion or 'Table 23'? If it's the latter, I have been successfully cross referencing to that since Flare 5. What I did was this: ...

Re: PDF output gotchas?
You might be able to have it one way for Word output and one way for PDF output, if you have to produce both types of output. Fortunately, once I get the PDF version perfected, I can dispense with the Word output once and for all. It's a lot of work whipping the Flare topics into shape, but it will...

Re: PDF output gotchas?
After working with MadCap Tech Support and re-trying everyone's suggestions (thanks, Lisa, Kevin, and Andrew), I'm happy to say that I've almost solved all my issues. I'd like to share my solutions here; hopefully it'll save someone else some agony. I was really skeptical initially about going direc...

Re: Applying a new <ul> class style
Thanks, Andrew--that did the trick! :) I also discovered that when I right-click the <ul> tag in the structure bar and then choose "Select", I can see my <ul> classes in the Styles list. I didn't realize the tricky interaction between <ul> and <li>, depending on what's actually selected. I...

Applying a new <ul> class style
I have created a new class under the <ul> tag. But how do I apply this class? I cannot see it in my Styles list--only my <li> styles show.
Thanks.
Carl
Thanks.

Re: PDF output gotchas?
You mentioned that you're using a custom LI style. I think the solution would be to instead use a custom UL style to do the same job. The UL will probably handle the page break better, and by using a custom style you avoid applying it to every other list. Thanks for the suggestion, Kevin. But unfor...

Re: PDF output gotchas?
I could be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure that worked for me. Is that max-width defined in the print medium or in the default medium (and therefore being inherited by the print medium)? And did you set the max-width on the img tag or the paragraph tag containing the img tag? The max-width is defined...

PDF output gotchas?
I'm taking the big plunge and am attempting to output directly to PDF. I've been told by MadCap that refining their PDF output is their primary focus and I've grown tired of the Word limitations. But as I experiment, I've discovered a host of issues that worked in Word...but not in PDF! Has anyone e...

Problems with headers in Master Page Layout
I've been wrestling with the Master Page Layout in Flare and I can't get it to do what I think is a very simple task. Perhaps I'm missing something obvious. The page header for our manuals simply consists of the name of the user manual and our company logo. On odd pages, the manual name is flush lef...

Re: Updating topic title after renaming topic
Well I'll be darned....it seems that deleting all the <title> tags does in fact update the corresponding TOC entries...but only for 98% of the cases. There are still a few topics that stubbornly cling to the old name for whatever reason. I'll keep poking around, but at least this saves me a huge chu...

Re: Updating topic title after renaming topic
Thanks, Lisa--removing all the "<title>" tags did the trick! With no titles, Flare now defaults to using the topic heading for things like searches in the WebHelp. Whacking them all using a regex expression was sure faster than manually resetting all the topic titles (which was my worse ca...

Updating topic title after renaming topic
I just finished renaming many topics in my project. To prevent problems, I always have the topic title, topic file name, and the first major heading within the topic the same. During my rename, I updated the topic heading and topic file name, but I didn't update the topic title. I had assumed (incor...

Re: Close topic without save prompt?
The stylesheet isn't much better since you have to go down three levels to get to it, although I tend to do that a lot anyway just because I often directly modify the stylesheet page, since the Stylesheet Editor still isn't as good as it could be. Couldn't you just use the "Open Master Stylesh...

Re: Close topic without save prompt?
Well, I am a bit of a compulsive saver...and I'm a bit of a compulsive resource-monitoring fanatic too. I realize that I can leave everything open, then do a mass save at the end, and I do have auto save turned on and I occasionally do a manual "save all" as well. But experience has taught...

Close topic without save prompt?
Is there a way to have Flare always save a topic when I close it? Sounds like a simple request, but I can't find this anywhere. I know that if you enable Auto Save and the topic has been automatically saved, you will not be prompted again to save when you close. But I am making a large number of min...

Hi res "Print Version" images no improvement
When I created documentation for our new product, I created two versions of most images: one for screen and a hi res version (300dpi) for print. I relied on Flare's ability to select the proper version depending on the target output. The documentation was output to WebHelp, PDF, and a physical print...

Re: Cross references to autonumbered tables
Thanks, Lisa. But it turns out I was mistaken: it is possible to create a list of figures/tables in Word without using the embedded figure/table codes. The static output from Flare works fine. (I should have known better, but I've never created figure lists any other way in all my years of working w...

Re: Cross references to autonumbered tables
Thanks, Lisa! That does help simplify things. I knew there was a better way. Now, do you know if there's a way to generate a "List of Figures" and "List of Tables" when I create my Word output? As it stands now, the "see Figure xx" that appears in Word is just static te...

Re: Cross references to autonumbered tables
I finally got my cross references to work and I thought I'd share my results with the community. Compared to Word, adding cross references to autonumbered tables in Flare is a major song and dance. My method is slightly unconventional, but it works: 1. Create two paragraph styles to caption your fig...

Re: Cross references to autonumbered tables
Thought I'd follow up with the solution that I found to this in case anyone else was in the same position. I created a paragraph tag with the same autonumbering properties as my caption tag and, instead of formatting the caption tag directly with the autonumber format, I placed the paragraph tag in...

Re: Failed to run command 'Copy'
I've started encountering this same problem recently, with the same symptoms: Flare would occasionally throw up a "failed to run command" when I try a Copy or Delete. However repeating the action usually works. There's no pattern that I can see. I'm running flare 4.2 on Windows XP XP3, wit...
