Which option would people who don't use Frame because they produce online documentation exclusively use? In my case, I have no idea if Frame 8 is good or bad, because it's not in the right category of tools to fit my needs. If I did more print docs, I'd probably be looking at it more closely. It's a...

Re:
Which is why I asked about Word 2007. Didn't MS hide some XML in there somewhere? Or is it, in practice, just a ribbon on the same old, same old? Couldn't tell ya, as I haven't got Word 2007 to work with yet. I know MS talked about it being XML based, but as far as how they implemented it.....

It is a little surprising. In my case the Word imports I did were of draft TOC documents, so for the most part I was just dealing with headings and preliminary body text, with the intent of doing the main authoring in Flare. If you have more robust Word documentation your needs will be more elaborat...

Darn. I guess it could be related to the fact that Word isn't a structured format the way HTML or XML are. For example, the only thing that really connects the elements of a list together are the visual cues of indentation and numbers / bullets. There's nothing like an OL tag wrapping everything ins...

Re: slow
At our office, they're talking about using VMWare to get rid of multiple machines at people's desks. A body could run both a Windows AND a Linux session on the one machine, simultaneously. Clear a lot of cubicle real-estate, cut down noise, and reduce the number of heat-emitters. At least, that's t...

Re:
No, Word handles Ctrl-Y as a repeat command. I have requested this for Flare because I'd use it quite a bit (as I do in Word). That's funny, in my copy of Word 2003 it sez right in the Edit menu that Ctrl+Y is redo. Plus I just did this test: - type the word "great" - hit Ctrl+Z = "g...

Ok, I guess we have a different way of working. I haven't run a specific spell check pass in years, to be honest (pre-dating my work in Flare by a long way). However, I also won't let anything out without copy and content editing it--and that's when I also check for the red lines. As far as grammar ...

Re:
I typically work with Spell Check While Typing turned on (it's in the Tools menu just above the Spell Check feature). I've found it works pretty well. That way when I do an edit for content / punctuation / etc. I can visually look for spelling errors as well. That does not help when you are working...

Re: Padding left and images in a list
Are your images inside the <ol> tags? When I use images in that way I close off the list, insert an image, and then start a new list (with the numbering continued from the previous list). Working this way seemed to give me the greatest control when exporting to Word. I normally insert the image int...

The other thing you can do is go into Index Entry mode. When in this mode, anything you type is automatically made into an index entry instead of standard text. Also, it remembers what you have in the index already, so if you have already entered a word you can type 2 or 3 letters and then select fr...

I know a few people on the list are using Tortoise SVN with Flare. I'm not sure how similar CVS is to SVN, but it's possible some of the techniques they used may be helpful. Specifically, SVN adds a tracking folder (called .SVN) into every folder it manages, which sounds similar to the problem you'r...

Basically, I'm running the same hardware as our developers use. Well, you are a developer! Re:
The PC has a Celeron processor (2.4 ghz) and 512 mb of RAM. Not to get picky, but that's hardly what I'd call an up-to-date PC (to quote your first post). 2.4 GHz Celerons came out over 3 years ago. For production work I'd consider that an antique. And I would definitely recommend more than 512 MB ...
