Internal error: Index was out of range

Post by jlemon01 »

I received the following error message when building a print (PDF) document.
Any ideas on what might be causing it? The full text reads:

"Internal error: Index was out of range. Must be non-native and less than the size of the collection.
Parameter name: index."

Not sure what this means. The document itself does not have an index.
So I assume this is referring to some other type of internal index.
Any ideas or guidance you can provide to correct this error is much appreciated.
Thanks,
-John

It's an error about the programming, not about your project. The index listed is not for your index; it's an index for a programming construct. In short, the message does not tell you anything useful at all.

Can you duplicate this error using a small test project, or is it only in the one project?

Andrew,
It only seems to be happening with one project.
At least, this is the first time I've seen it.
I happens every time I compile this project.

I assume you have already tried the standard methods -- close Flare and reopen it, etc.

That being the case, I'd create a new TOC and add your topics one by one, building between each, to see if you can figure out which topic (if any) is causing the problem.

I resolved it by submitting a help ticket, which MadCap promptly resolved. I'll pass on my lessons for other users:

I wanted a blank page (no headers or footers) for my copyright/legal text. So on my "Default" page layouts, I created an Empty page with a body frame. I also used this empty page to to "Start New Chapter" in the TOC.

So, I made two mistakes:

1. You should not put a Body frame on an Empty page. To fix the problem, you can do two things:

(a) Remove the Body frame from the Empty page.

(b) On the page layout, change the "Page Type" from Empty to some other type. I created a blank page with a Body frame, and selected a "Page Type" of First.

2. You should not start a chapter with an "Empty" page. To fix the problem, I changed the "Page Type" to to the new "First" page that I created to resolve the first problem, above.

The tech guy has submitted enhancement requests to help prevent these mistakes on some future Flare release. Hopefully this all makes sense. If not, send me a message and I'll elaborate.

Thanks,
-John

Thanks much! I had the same problem after adding an empty page to the page layout and applying it. Your solution allowed me to correct the problem in no time. Thanks!
