Struggling with PDF output

Post by jkpalmer »

Trying to find the correct / best approach.

Printing requirements are:

Each topic has needs to print a "logo" with text to the right of it, but only on the first "page" of each topic, i.e. do not print the "logo" with text to the right on second...n pages of topic

Do not display the "logo" with text to the right at the top of each topic for web layout.

Print the "logo" with text to the right at the top of every topic in a specific toc.

Page break before each printed topic.

Do not print the "logo" with text to the right at the top of the generated TOC of the PDF.

I have tried all kinds of techniques to no avail, i.e. Page Layouts, Snippets, etc.

Any advice / assistance is greatly appreciated.

Your page layouts should have a "First" page in them, and the logo and text should be included on the page layout, not the topic.

Do not display the "logo" with text to the right at the top of each topic for web layout.
Because you're using master pages rather than page layouts, you won't see the logo etc in your web output.

Print the "logo" with text to the right at the top of every topic in a specific toc.
Assuming that's for your PDF output, the first point should deal with that.

Page break before each printed topic.
Define the style in your print medium for your first style (usually a heading style) to include page-break-before: always.

Do not print the "logo" with text to the right at the top of the generated TOC of the PDF.
If you create a page layout for the TOC that doesn't include the logo etc, include a TOC topic that just includes a TOC proxy and put it in your Flare TOC where you want it, using the new page layout you've created (then turn off the automatic TOC) you'll be sorted.

I have tried all kinds of techniques to no avail, i.e. Page Layouts, Snippets, etc.

That should get you started. :)

ChoccieMuffin,

I appreciate your response very much. Thanks for taking the time to help.

I have been attempting to do as you described, but I am still struggling.

How / where did you learn the "ins and outs" of PDF generation in Flare?

Perhaps I should have asked if someone could recommend a good online tutorial / class that explains what you have described....

Ooo, I've been using it for about eight years, so where I learnt things is pretty lost in the mists of time.

There is a Getting Started PDF guide somewhere on the MadCap site that you might want to look through, and the webinars are a fabulous resource, available here: https://www.madcapsoftware.com/resource ... aspx#flare which I strongly recommend you take a look at. There's one called "I Just Bought MadCap Flare. Now Where Do I Start?" and another one called "Getting Started With MadCap Flare, Part 5: Generating Print Output" that might be useful, but there are absolutely loads. And if you click the Live Webinars link on that page there's one coming up on 18th Jan from Mike Hamilton which you should watch (he's a very good presenter).

I have watched suggested webinars, have made several attempts at producing what my business requires, but still not able to produce a satisfactory result.

I think that I may have to revert to creating a snippet, containing what I want to print in each topic, then applying a conditional tag setting for "Print Only".

Will enroll in the recommended webinar.

Thanks, once again.

Take another look at page layouts, and create a "First" page in the page layout you use for most of your topics.

Include your logo and text on that "First" page.

Give it another go, and look at the bit in the help to do with page layouts.

It is rather confusing to start with - more of a learning cliff than a learning curve - but better to get that right rather than having to edit all your topics that way.
