Where is Default TOC in MCF Empty Template???

Post by jjdave »

Hi All,

I am using Madcap Flare Empty Template. I have multiple questions:
When I generate PDF Output, everything works fine, except the TOC.

This TOC is auto-generated, since I have no TOC in the project.
Would anyone know, where can I find this TOC Proxy? Also, how can I modify that TOC (from the Proxy)?

Appreciate any help.
Thanks.

Hi,

They are located under the p style. Open the stylesheet and look for p.TOC1, p.TOC2, etc. You can add a normal TOC on a blank topic from Insert > Proxy > Insert TOC Proxy. It's easy to use. When I setup a PDF, I create a Flare TOC starting with the cover, then add hte toc topic i just created, and then whatever content I have.

I know Flare is intimidating at first, but you'll pick it up quickly.

Hello Trent,

Appreciate your response very much. I added new TOC, now I know how to add Proxy. Still working on Stylesheet.

AUTO-NUMBERING ISSUE: H1 STYLE is assigned to TOC Title & Chapter Titles. H1 STYLE is Auto-numbered.

Now TOC is set to Chapter 1. I have two questions about that.
  • How to set my TOC Title to 0?
Since TOC & Chapter Title both share H1 STYLE, is there a way to TURN-OFF Auto-numbering for TOC Title but not for the Chapter Titles?

Sure. Just create a new P. class having the same font/paragraph attributes as the H1 - Except for the auto-numbering. It'll look the same and won't be numbered.

Re: No AutoNum on Head/Foot (only on Content Page)

Post by jjdave »

Thanks so much. Now I have two H1 Styles. And all works fine.
  • H1 default (for TOC Title) & H1.chapter-titles (for all the Chapter Titles)
Now final question on this matter:
I have only one Page Style, which has Header & Footer. Now I have two questions for this.
  • What do I have to do to Remove Header & Footer from Title Page & TOC Page?
How can I display Footer on Chapter Pages without Auto-numbering?
Once again, considering my 1st post, I have been provided with very helpful information.
Thank you so much.

Take a look at a the page layout file in Resources/PageLayouts.

You can add page layout files and modify their individual pages to suit your needs and then apply the page layout by setting the properties for entries in a Flare TOC. Check out Chapter 6 in the Print Output Guide (FlarePrintedOutputGuide.pdf). It's not as flexible as FrameMaker, but it's pretty good. The only thing missing is be assigning a layout by paragraph style. But Flare suits for most purposes.

Also, take a look at the specifics on making/using an outline TOC (C.7) for the PDF output. The more items in the outline, the more opportunity to change an individual page style.

No AutoNum on Head/Foot (only on Content Page)

Post by jjdave »

Appreciate your response. Creating Custom Page Layouts and applying to individual pages has been successful.
I must say, "FlarePrintedOutputGuide.pdf" guide has been very helpful; still needs to explore on CH 6 & 7 in detail.

How can I display Footer so it only displays Chapter Title and not the Auto-number?
  • I have a style h1.chapter-title (for Autonum) that displays Chapter Number & Title.
On my Page Layout Footer, I have used variable LEVEL1 which displays Chapter Number & Title.
I would like to know your thoughts on above question and any information that you can provide.
I would be interested in knowing: Do I need to create new Style Class (for Footer) or Create/Modify System Variables to get the result?

Just to let you know, my Footer is working fine when I used TITLE Variable (from System Variables).
Once again, thank you for your help and patience.

Ah, the age-old question. I believe there are some workarounds posted, but there were straightforward. It's not easy to separate auto-numbers and their text. I'm sorry I have nothing in my pocket on this.

For searching, your best bets is to use a google search

site:forums.madcapsoftware.com "your search string"

You'll have more control of the search.

Re: Chapter Headings & Autonumbering...

Post by jjdave »

Understood and appreciate all your help. As mentioned in my last post, I have accomplished my objective.

Now let me ask you this question as a recap on this whole topic:
  • In topics, I want to display Chapter Headings & Chapter Numbers.
In TOC, I want to display Chapter Headings & Chapter Numbers.
In footer, I want to display Chapter Headings without Numbers.
How would you accomplish that?
What I am looking for here, is that can you create a Style Classes where one for Chapter Name and another Chapter Numbers?

Thanks.

This is one I haven't needed to tackle. I've read of other's attempts here, though. I'm afraid I'm out of answers for you. You should post a new question on that subject to get answers and suggestions.

Hi Trent,

I will post new question for separating Chapter Numbering & Chapter Title, some time later.

Just wanted to let you know, this one Post has helped me resolve 5 to 7 issues.
Also, this one Post has also helped me learn 10 or more new things, which I have incorporated in my project.

Thank you so much.
