Possible to retrieve Color Picker, Recent File list etc.?

Post by donpedro »

Today, we migrated our network to a new domain and that basically reset all my Flare settings.
Is there any way to retrieve my personal settings (e.g. my colors in the Color Picker, the list of recent files/projects etc.) so that my "new" Flare can be an exact copy of my "old "Flare? Or has all the settings been deleted/reset in the registry for ever? Or are they (hopefully) stored in some hidden folder in Windows....
please, please, please say yes....!

Thanks in advance.

System:
Windows 7 (64-bit).

PS! I LOOOOOOOOOVE Flare. :D (phew, just needed to get that out...).

Check if in the User folders is a folder name using your name and either the old and/or new domain name. Whatever is the older folder may contain application settings for Flare assuming they get stored in a file. If they are in the registry they still should be there as well under some branch of HKEY_USERS, but which one is hard to tell. I also don't recommend monkeying around in the registry.
You could ask IT if they have a tool that transfers the settings of your old user account to the new user account.

Those colours are stored in the registry; so you can export/import them, assuming you can access your old registry (and are happy working with the registry).

From another thread...
Dave Lee wrote:
  • 1. Open the registry and browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\MadCap Software\\Flare\\Default
  • 2. Open the string CustomColors
This is the list of custom colours in Flare.
  • 3. Select File > Export and choose to export the Selected branch. Save the registry file.

Now you'll have a registry file that you use to set up the custom colours list (e.g. to reset your own colours list, or distribute to other users). Double-clicking on the file will import the registry entry, and set up all the colours in the custom colours list in Flare.

(This will also do the lists for recent font families and recent colours.)

But that assumes that current_user refers to the same user currently logged in. I am in no way a Windows user profile expert, but since the Windows system considers the current login as a new user the current_user isn't the same as it used to be. HKEY_CURRENT_USER links only to the applicable portion of HKEY_USERS. As mentioned before, the old settings will still be in the registry, but not under HKEY_CURRENT_USER.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I managed to do the export-and-import, but I wouldn't recommend anyone to do what I did without assistance from your IT dept.

If anybody is in a similar position, I'll simply recommend the following procedure:

BEFORE you move to another domain (or install another version of Flare, for that matter):
1. Open regedit and export the Madcap Flare settings (as described by Dave earlier).
2. Copy that file (MYOLDFLARESETTINGS.REG) where you can get to it afterwards (e.g. USB key).

AFTER you've moved to another domain (or another Flare version):
1. Copy the REG file to the harddrive. (DO NOT DOUBLE-CLICK).
2. Right-click and select Open With Notepad (DO NOT DOUBLE-CLICK).
3. All your old settings (e.g. color codes in hex) can now be read from the Notepad file.
4. Manually enter the desired values in Flare.
