Background Thread error messages - Compiled SOLUTIONS

Post by HeraTech »

I was getting the exact same error dialog EVERY time I save a file. And not just getting the error message once, but FOUR times. ARGH! After spending quite a bit of time poring over the forum this afternoon searching for answers, I found the solution to my problem. But to save others time, I’ve compiled some related links. It seems that the cause of the error message is seldom obvious from the .NET error message, so perhaps this can save someone else some time by putting everything in one place.

My error message = Problem(s) in FileList background thread: Index was out of range. Must be non-negative and less than the size of the collection.
http://forums.madcapsoftware.com/viewto ... ead#p80866
CAUSE – Corrupted Analyzer folder?
SOLUTION - I deleted the Analyzer folder and that solved it.

Error Message = Internal error: Index was out of range. Must be non-native and less than the size of the collection.
Parameter name: index.
http://forums.madcapsoftware.com/viewto ... 10&t=12037
CAUSE – Adding an empty page to the page layout and/or starting a chapter with an empty page.
SOLUTION – Remove the body frame from the Empty page. Start new chapters with First page.

Error Message = Problem(s) in background thread: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
http://forums.madcapsoftware.com/viewto ... ead#p74098
SOLUTION – Reset the window layout to the factory default. Window > Layouts > Reset Window Layout.

Error Message = Problem(s) in background thread: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation.
http://forums.madcapsoftware.com/viewto ... ead#p69041
CAUSE - Project where none of the targets was set to primary.
SOLUTION –Under project organizer, expand the target folder and right click any of the target files and select make primary

Error Message = Problems in background thread: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation.
http://forums.madcapsoftware.com/viewto ... ead#p51812
CAUSE – Accidentally linked to a page layout in Output folder instead of in project folder.
SOLUTION – Link to the correct page layout file.

Error Message = Problem in the background thread: There is no working folder mapping for [file name]
http://forums.madcapsoftware.com/viewto ... ead#p33273
SOLUTION – User was able to successfully import the project using the File-->Import Project-->from Source Control feature.

Error Message = Problem(s) in background thread: File or project not found
http://forums.madcapsoftware.com/viewto ... ead#p34911
CAUSE – IT changed source control folder names.
SOLUTION – IT changed folder names back to the original names.

Error Message – Not specified, but started with “Problem(s) in background thread”
http://forums.madcapsoftware.com/viewto ... ead#p38270
No specific solution posted, but theories about causes included empty index entries and badly formed index terms.

Error message - Problem(s) in background thread: Value cannot be null.
http://forums.madcapsoftware.com/viewto ... ead#p17382
Publishing problems. No solution posted, thread was hijacked by another user.

Error Message = Problem(s) in background thread: The process cannot access the file Filename.xml because it is being used by another process.
http://forums.madcapsoftware.com/viewto ... ead#p55613
No solution posted.

Error Message = Problems in background thread: Create failed for Database ‘MadCapFeedbackServer’.
http://forums.madcapsoftware.com/viewto ... ead#p35491
User having problems installing the trial version of Feedback Server.
No solution posted.

Error Message = Problems in background thread: The remote server returned an error:

No solution posted.

Very old thread about .NET error messages (no solution)

Has anyone had the message I've attached below? I didn't see it posted above. My coworker and I remapped multiple times on Monday and finally got TFS working better. We're actually seeing icons and things we didn't see before with regards to source control, etc (like actually seeing when the other has something checked out). We *think* it might have something to do with our paths being exactly the same locally now (folder names were different before), but aren't sure. As was suggested by others in the office I go into TFS via Visual Studio first and last thing of the day to get latest and to check in and in between just use Flare. I've enabled background status checks since remapping as well.

I keep getting this when trying to check-in and it seems to go through the motions, but then when it tells me to select files to check-in the window stays blank. I've sat here 10-20 minutes with a blank window for a measly 2 files. I'll cancel out and try again and sometimes it does the same thing and other times I get a whole list of files it requests me to add which don't need adding because they already exist or they have been deleted. Once in a while closing and reopening my project works, but upon closing the project it will throw this error at times too.

I have deleted the Analyzer, Output, and Source Control folders at least 3 times today and I even reset my window layout as was suggested in another post. I've restarted my computer once today and have opened and closed Flare several times. This is occurring in version 7.2.

My coworker's has been working just fine of course. :?

Don't have an answer but I am commenting just so you know that your problem is being viewed.

Have you contacted MadCap support about this?

I'd suggest that I might get a bit more traction if you re-post this as a new thread.

"attempted to read or write protected memory"

I'm going to guess that this is related to .Net. I'm going to also guess that you should look into making certain that you have the latest .net service packs installed. Have you tried installing Flare on a different computer?

Good luck

BTW, I could you find a few references to this error, in this forum:
http://forums.madcapsoftware.com/viewto ... =13&t=7739
http://forums.madcapsoftware.com/viewto ... =4&t=10685

...but they are so old, I doubt they are relevant.

Thanks for posting the errors!
Unfortunately this one may have other causes. I got this error but I didn't have body frames on any empty page layouts and all my new chapters started with a first page.
I know the source of the error is from another error I am having with a table cell merging and it has somehow affected the building process. As we're still working through the merged cell error I can't really clarify how to solve this (other than unmerging the cell.. but you may not know which cell has caused the error so I don't advise unmerging all cells!). I do know that when solving this other error I no longer get the error message I quoted above (from HeraTech's post).
I'll try to remember to post back with the solution if/when we find one.

Thank you so much for posting these error messages and solutions. My error message isn't listed here, but deleting the Analyzer folder worked for me. To make my error message searchable to anyone else experiencing this issue, I've included details below.

ACTION:
I opened a project in Flare V9, and then clicked Project tab > Project Properties > Source Control tab > Unbind Project.

ISSUE:
I received the following error:
Problem(s) in FileList background thread: Cannot access a disposed object.
Object name: 'SvnClientContext'. [System.ObjectDisposedException]
Note: The project appeared to be unbound in the Project Properties dialog box, however it still seemed to be linked to SVN (for example; if I deleted a file, it would prompt me to allow it to be deleted from SVN as well).

SOLUTION:
1. I deleted my project from my computer and then download it from SVN again.
2. I deleted the Analyzer folder.
3. I opened the project in Flare V9, and then clicked Project tab > Project Properties > Source Control tab > Unbind Project.

FINAL RESULT:
The project became unbound from SVN as expected, and I received no error messages.

Thank you for your support!

Another tip relating to what you put in source control. You don't need to keep the \Analyzer and \Users folders because they are generated automatically any time you do stuff in the project, so there's no need to keep them and they're quite big so you are using up space unnecessarily. You could probably also not bother keeping the \Output folder either.

During a search, I hit upon this thread. The background thread error I am seeing is somewhat different. Can anyone provide insight into what the attached error message is trying to tell me? What is the solution? Thank you!!!

Some wrote on another thread that "I'd try resetting the window layouts before reinstalling - sometimes that fixes anomalies." will fix the problem (and it did for the other user).
Please... I am new to Flare, etc. .. I rarely use it and when I do there are usually problems. What exactly do I need to do?

Ignore my request. I simply deleted the project off of my C: drive and re-imported it from Subversion.
Luckily, the changes I'd made were minimal (prior to the error appeared that prevented me from checking in the updates).

I haven't seen those, but I get slews of errors using the number spinners to adjust style settings.
