Forum search plugin for Firefox

Post by NorthEast »

Hello,
A few years ago I created a forum search plugin for FireFox.

Anyway, I've updated the search plugin for current versions of Firefox.

You can find them here:
Foums:
madcap forums search.xml
Knowledgebase:
madcap kb search.xml
Flare 10 help:
flare 10 help search.xml
Flare 9 help:
flare 9 help search.xml
Flare 8 help:
flare 8 help search.xml
Installation
  • Right-click the link and save the XML file to your PC.
  • Put the XML file in the Firefox installation searchplugins folder, usually Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\browser\searchplugins
  • (or just searchplugins in older versions).
  • Restart Firefox.
Using a search

In the search box (top right), click the icon on the left of the search box to display a menu, then select the search to use.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Search has always been so frustrating in the forums and help files. These plug-ins are terrific.

I used this search in the past and it was great. I just realized that I hadn't used it in a while, and I cannot seem to get Mozilla Firefox to recognize the search(es). I've reinstalled them, restarted Firefox, etc. Any tips?

The path where to copy the XML file to has changed. I'm not sure if the change was due to the newer version of Firefox or because I now have Windows 7. The location I put the XML file at is C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\browser\searchplugins. (The browser folder is the new part of the path.)

Try that new location and see if it works.

Thanks Lisa.
It's a change in Firefox v21; the folder seems to have changed from \searchplugins to \browser\searchplugins.

Firefox also seems to lose your existing plugins, which is nice.

For those using Flare 9 and want a search engine for FireFox, here it is:

Credit goes to Dave Lee for starting this... I just made a few minor edits.

Cheers, I've updated the original post.

(I didn't do v9 initially because it took several weeks for the v9 help to be covered by Google.)

I really want to use this search feature! Trouble is, the file goes to the "Compatibility files" in C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\browser\searchplugins, and it does not show up in Firefox as a search option (I still only get Google, Bing, etc.). How do I make it work? Thanks!

Dave, this is awesome.

If it helps anyone, I put together some instructions to get similar functionality in Google Chrome. Unlike Dave's plugins, the method below displays results from the forum instead of Google. However, you can replace the URL from step 3.3 below with one of the strings from Dave's search plugins to get Google site search results. For example:

Code: Select all

http://www.google.com/search?q=site:http://forums.madcapsoftware.com %s
  1. Right-click inside the omnibar (where you type URLs and searches) and select Edit search engines...
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the Other search engines frame where you see empty fields to add your own
  3. Fill out the fields like so:
  4.
5. Add new search engine: MadCap Forums
  6. Keyword: MadCap
  7. URL with %s in place of query:

    Code: Select all

    http://forums.madcapsoftware.com/search.php?keywords=%s&terms=all&author=&sc=1&sf=all&sr=topics&sk=t&sd=d&st=0&ch=300&t=0&submit=Search

Tab out of the third field and click Done on the window[/*]

To use the search, type Madcap into your omnibar, then hit tab. The omnibar will show Search Madcap Forums inside a blue box and you can type your search query for the forums and press ENTER to search.[/*]
NOTES:
The keyword from step 3.2 can be anything you want. This is just the word you must type in the omnibox before you press tab to enable the forum search.
The URL from step 3.3 can be customized based on the Advanced search options. To build the search you want to use, go to the forums and:
  1. Click Advanced search
  2. Enter the word TEST into the Search for keywords field
  3. Set the SEARCH OPTIONS to your liking
  4. Click Search
  5. Copy the URL that results from your search
  6. Use the URL you copied here instead of the URL from step 3.3 above, but replace the word TEST with %s, which is how Google Chrome knows where to place the keyword from your search into the query
The search I provided above in 3.3 defaults to showing results as topics because I think showing them as individual posts is awful.

Thanks Dan - that's a useful addition.

I found it a bit of a drag having to type "MadCap" each time, so I just entered a keyword "mf".
Note that you'll get much better results with Google - the reason I created the plugin was because the forums search is quite poor.
